"I’ve Tried Everything… But I’m Still Exhausted"

Recently, a woman in leadership reached out to me. She’d taken two weeks off over Christmas. No emails. No meetings. Space to recharge.

And yet, she felt no better.

“I’ve tried everything,” she told me. “I meditate, I use the Calm app, I don’t check emails after 6 pm, but I still wake up feeling depleted.

Her voice cracked when she said, “If I don’t have the energy to do the things I love, what’s the point of all this?”

That conversation stayed with me.

This woman leads a large global team. She’s committed, brilliant, and deeply self-aware. But no matter how many wellness habits she stacked up, the exhaustion never lifted.

When we explored her relationships, especially at home, it became clear: she was giving endlessly, but not getting her emotional needs met.

Why Burnout Isn’t Just About Work

There’s a pattern I see again and again, especially in women leaders:

  • You hold space for your team, your children, and your partner.

  • You’re the one people come to when they need support.

  • You don’t want to be a burden, so you rarely ask for help.

  • You downplay your emotional needs because “others have it worse.”

The result? Chronic depletion.

Burnout doesn’t just come from back-to-back meetings. It comes from the emotional weight you carry in silence. And that weight gets heavier when your emotional needs—being seen, heard, valued, loved—go unmet.

The Missing Piece in Resilience and Leadership Training

Most resilience training for managers focuses on the surface: time management, mindfulness, and breathing techniques. And while those are helpful, they miss the root cause of burnout for many women:

A dysregulated nervous system that never feels truly safe or supported.

This is where traditional training falls short. It teaches leaders to “manage stress,” but it doesn’t explore what’s creating the stress response in the first place.

When your emotional needs aren’t met, your nervous system stays in survival mode. You become hyper-vigilant. You overthink. You shut down. You start to question your value. You push harder because you're terrified of letting anyone down.

But you don’t need more pressure, you need restoration.

Signs Your Emotional Needs Aren’t Being Met

Here are some of the subtle signs that your burnout may be rooted in unmet emotional needs:

  • You feel like you're constantly “giving” in your relationships, with little in return.

  • You rarely feel truly heard or validated when you express your emotions.

  • You crave connection, but often feel alone, even when you're not.

  • You find yourself daydreaming about running away, just for a break.

  • You wonder, “Why can’t I just be happy? I have so much to be grateful for…”

This isn’t just personal, it’s neurological.

When we don’t feel safe, supported, or connected in our closest relationships, our nervous system enters a prolonged state of dysregulation. We stay in fight, flight, or freeze, draining our emotional and physical energy.

Real Resilience Starts with Emotional Safety

If you want to lead with energy, clarity, and strength, you need a regulated nervous system.

And that starts by getting honest about what you need, not just at work, but at home. Emotional safety isn’t a luxury. It’s a leadership necessity.
