As I release this episode, we’re heading into what experts are calling the darkest time of the coronavirus pandemic. Here in the United States and around the world, people of all ages are getting diagnosed, hospitalized, and are dying at unprecedented rates. Families have lost their routines, their childcare, their livelihoods, they’ve lost family members, and their very sense of sanity. Businesses around the world have wondered how they can support their employees, whether those employees work at home or are essential workers who need to be on site. Working parents and others struggle every day to figure out how to help their kids with school and get their work done while managing the other necessary aspects of life. And that’s just if they’ve been the lucky ones who haven’t gotten sick throughout this pandemic so far. It’s a really difficult time for everyone for so, so many reasons, and we need mental health support both at home and at work more than ever.

There are leadership experts and other “well-being experts” out there who have offered their services to individuals and organizations for many years. Amy and I have both noticed a trend in people who are not trained in mental health offering services that they simply don’t have any training or qualifications to provide. And it scares us both. I reached out to Amy a few months ago to get her thoughts on why this is happening, and how consumers, again both individuals AND companies, can filter out qualified mental health providers from those who may cause more harm than good.
