16 Minute Sermon
Welcome to the table! In this episode we’re beginning to go through the Sermon on the Mount. This is Jesus’ “kingdom manifesto.” This is the way of the Kingdom of Heaven. Kimberly, my co-host, and I read through the entire sermon, Matthew 5–7, honestly wrestling with the tension, we feel over parts of it. These three chapters contain some of Jesus’ most familiar words and arguably some of His most misunderstood words. We pause in between each chapter to talk about some parts that are hard to understand and hard to obey. The Sermon can be read in as little as 16 minutes. I'm inviting you to join us for the next couple of months reading it and coming back to the table for a series of episodes on the most important sermon of all time. Let’s learn to live it out together! D.A. Carson said, “The more I read these three chapters– Matthew 5, 6, and 7 – the more I am both drawn to them and shamed by them. Their brilliant light draws me like a moth to a spotlight; but the light is so bright it sears and burns.” Whether you've been following Jesus for years, are just getting started, or are simply considering it, you're invited to join us at the study table. Season 4, Episode 11 — Matthew: The Way of the Kingdom of Heaven Text: Matthew 4:18-25 Welcome to the table! In this episode we discuss Jesus calling four fishermen to become His disciples. I give some background on the relationship between a rabbi and his disciples in the first century. Kimberly and I reflect on being disciples of Jesus in the twenty-first century. We discuss what’s hard about it and what we misunderstood or didn’t understand about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. “A Rabbi's work was to instruct the crowds, but his greatest goal was to raise up disciples who would carry on his teaching.” Have you dropped your nets and started following Jesus? Unexpected Direction Galilee of the Gentiles
Season 4, Episode 10 — Matthew: The Way of the Kingdom of Heaven Text: Matthew 4:12–17 In this episode, Kimberly and I finally arrive at the moment when Jesus begins his public ministry. As we step into Matthew 4, we talk about Jesus leaving Nazareth for Capernaum and why Galilee—called Galilee of the Gentiles—matters so much to the story of the kingdom of heaven. We reflect on Jesus’ rejection in his hometown, the way he flips expectations, and how the kingdom challenges our small worldviews. This conversation invites us to wrestle with nuance, loosen our grip on control, and consider who we’re willing to sit with at the table as we follow the Table Flipper together. Matthew 4: Standing Firm Against the Enemy
Welcome to the table! In this episode, we explore Jesus’ temptation in Matthew 4 and what it reveals about spiritual warfare, identity, and endurance. As followers of Jesus, we are not merely passing through the wilderness — we live here. But this is not a place of defeat. Because Jesus triumphed, we can stand firm in His victory. What We Cover in This Episode Why the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness The parallels between: Jesus and Israel in the wilderness Jesus and Adam & Eve in the garden The three categories of temptation: Lust of the flesh Lust of the eyes Pride of life How Satan twists Scripture — and how Jesus responds What it means to stop saying, "I'm in a wilderness season" Key Scriptures Matthew 4:1–11 Ephesians 6:10–18 Exodus 15–17 Numbers 14 Genesis 3 1 John 2:15–17 Romans 8:31–39 Thanks for listening! Anxiety, Panic, and the Faith That Held On
Welcome to the table! My Guest: Kim Stolzfus is a college instructor at the University of Kentucky. Kim shares her powerful testimony—one marked by early religious confusion, people-pleasing, debilitating panic attacks, and seasons of profound hopelessness. Through it all, Jesus continually meets her, flips her assumptions about God, and draws her into freedom, purpose, and joy in His upside-down kingdom. This conversation is an honest exploration of what it looks like to bring our religious thinking to Jesus and allow Him to transform it—slowly, faithfully, and sometimes painfully—into true gospel freedom. In This Episode, You’ll Hear: Kim’s early experience with faith and how fear distorted her view of God How people-pleasing and anxiety shaped her spiritual life A pivotal gospel conversation with a Campus Crusade (Cru) leader named Adele Why hearing the gospel didn’t immediately change everything—but planted a seed Kim’s descent into severe panic attacks and hopelessness after college A season of suffering that led to surrender and renewed dependence on God How God answered prayers in unexpected (and unwanted) ways Kim’s journey through graduate school, Washington D.C., and deep Christian community The power of Christian friendship, Bible study, and faithful presence How God now uses Kim’s story in her work as a university professor Why faith the size of a mustard seed is more than enough If you are walking through anxiety, fear, or despair—or if peace feels unfamiliar or even frightening—this episode is for you. Kim’s story is a reminder to never give up, to cling to Jesus even when faith feels small, and to trust that God is always at work, even when we can’t see it. Thanks for listening! The Baptism of Jesus: A New Beginning
In Episode 7, Twila and I slow down and sit with the baptism of Jesus in Matthew 3—a moment that marks both an ending and a beginning in God’s story. As John the Baptist completes his role of preparing the way, Jesus steps into the waters of the Jordan, fully identifying with humanity and choosing obedience, even though He has no sin of His own. We talk about why Jesus insists on being baptized “to fulfill all righteousness,” and how this moment launches His public ministry while revealing the heart of the kingdom of heaven. Together, we trace the Jordan River through Scripture—from creation, to Israel’s wilderness journey, to this powerful scene where the Father speaks, the Spirit descends, and the Son stands in humility. This conversation invites us to reflect on wilderness seasons, waiting, and learning to trust God’s timing. My prayer is that as we listen for God’s voice in our own wilderness, we’ll be equipped to bring hope, light, and belonging to others as we walk together in the way of the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 3: Fruit in Keeping with Repentance

Matthew 3: Fruit in Keeping with Repentance
In this episode, we gather at the table to explore Matthew 3 and the prophetic ministry of John the Baptist—a bold, table-flipping voice calling God’s people to repentance and renewal. In this conversation we invite our listeners to begin the year with anticipation, humility, and openness to transformation. John’s message is urgent: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” As Matthew’s Gospel introduces this phrase, we unpack why Matthew speaks of the “kingdom of heaven,” how John prepares the way for Jesus, and why repentance is more than behavior modification—it is a change of mind and direction that leads to a transformed life. We explore John’s confrontation of the Pharisees and Sadducees and his call to “produce fruit in keeping with repentance.” We reflect on the tension between salvation as a free gift and the lifelong journey of sanctification that follows. We discuss how repentance is not a one-time event, but an ongoing posture of confession, surrender, and renewal. Through personal stories, we also addresses influence, humility, and faithfulness without notoriety. John the Baptist’s willingness to fade into the background becomes a model for resisting platform culture and trusting God with the outcome of our obedience. We share how confession, community, and even painful seasons can become places of deep redemption—where wounds are transformed into fruit for the kingdom. Matthew 2: Exile, Grief, the Way of the Kingdom
Welcome to the table! In this Christmas-season episode, we continue sitting in Matthew 2 and invite Jesus to flip our tables as we linger with the hard parts of His story. We explore the families urgent flight to Egypt, Jesus as a refugee, and what this passage reveals about God’s heart for the vulnerable. Matthew shows us how Jesus retraces Israel’s story—yet succeeds where Israel failed—fulfilling Old Testament prophecy and revealing the unity of Scripture. We also confront the brutality of Herod, the grief of Bethlehem’s mothers, and the truth that every life matters deeply to God. Finally, we reflect on Jesus growing up in despised Nazareth—a reminder that our Savior identifies with outsiders, the marginalized, and those looked down upon. This episode invites us to deepen our biblical literacy, embrace compassion, and follow Jesus in the way of the Kingdom of Heaven. Joseph and the Way of the Kingdom: When God Interrupts Your Plans
In this episode, Julie and Kimberly continue their journey through Matthew in our series, The Way of the Kingdom of Heaven. Today, we step into one of the most surprising moments of the Gospel: Joseph’s dream and his quiet, courageous obedience. We begin with a candid conversation about how we each respond to unexpected news — anxiety, problem-solving, and control. We discuss: Joseph’s character: a young, just, compassionate man whose righteousness did not eclipse his mercy. The weight of the scandal: a pregnancy no one could explain, and the stigma Joseph quietly carried. The angel’s message: the dream that redirected Joseph’s entire life. God’s adoptive love: how Joseph’s story reveals the heart of the Father who brings us into His family. The clash of kingdoms: our plans vs. God’s plan — and the invitation to walk in the way of the Kingdom of Heaven. The Family Tree of Jesus: Finding Hope in Our Messy Stories
Welcome to the table! In this episode, we’re pulling up a chair to explore the family tree of Jesus — and what it reveals about God’s heart for our own broken families. By getting to know the people in Jesus’ genealogy, we discover that there’s nothing in our stories too big for Him to redeem. Jesus understands our grief, our scandals, our trauma, and our mess. He gets it — because His own family line tells a story of grace breaking through generations of pain. Twila joins the conversation as we unpack Matthew’s genealogy, written to prove that Jesus is both the Son of David and the Son of Abraham — the fulfillment of God’s covenant promises. We’ll see how Matthew intentionally includes women, Gentiles, and outsiders in the story of redemption, revealing that the gospel has always been radically inclusive. Introducing study of Matthew: The Way of the Kingdom of Heaven
Welcome back to the table! It’s been a minute since I’ve sat here doing what I love—talking about Jesus, the Table Flipper, and learning His table-flipping ways. In this episode, my co-host Kimberly Daniels joins me as we reflect on the unexpected turns our lives have taken this year. We’re also launching a brand-new study: Matthew—The Way of the Kingdom of Heaven. Together, we’re asking God to teach us the ways of His Kingdom through Matthew’s unique perspective and personality. This episode is all about setting the tone for what’s ahead in our study! Like Matthew, we each have our own “before and after” stories of following Jesus. Matthew went from being an insider, to an outsider, and then was brought back into the family of God—a story that mirrors the redeeming power of the gospel in all of us. Welcome to the table! This is the last episode in the Ephesians series. Amy Crump is back to talk with me about the relationship landmines associated with parenting and work. We do not ignore slavery in this passage either. I also get to talk briefly about the armor of God. Paul brings all of the relationship landmines together by laying out the armor of God in the context of our relationship struggles. We do not have a people problem. We have a real enemy working to wreak havoc in our relationships. This makes complete sense especially in light of how our relationships are to reveal that we are children of God. Welcome to the table! My conversation with Amy Crump covers a lot of ground. We had a long set up of discussing our formative years growing up in the Church era where we learned a number of erroneous teachings on the subject of submission. Add in a word study, a trip back to Genesis, and you end up with a long on ramp to Ephesians 5. Instead of editing this episode down, we’re inviting you to spend some extra time with us at the table. This might be a good episode to listen to while you’re being active. I love to listen to long podcast episodes when I’m cooking, doing household work, or excercising. Passover Part 2
Welcome back to the table for part two of a conversation Twila and I had about Passover in season one. Holy week is such an important week of remembrance each and every year. This week was important for the Jews to remember how God delivered them from Egyptian slavery. For us followers of Jesus, this week is when we remember the high cost of what our sin cost Jesus. Against the backdrop of Passover, Jesus rolled out the New Covenant. This year during this season of lent, I have been richly blessed in my relationship with Jesus, who you know, I call the Table Flipper. This week, I am drawing near to him, while planning one of the best meals of the year. Reflections and Blessings
Welcome to the table! I loved having this conversation with Kimberly. I believe you will also love hearing from her. Many of the reasons I love Kimberly simply shine throughout this episode. She is bold and transparent about who she is now and who she is becoming. We talked about last year's highlights, lessons, and much more. I bless God for her life! In February we’re going to be shaping our conversations around Ephesians. One of the things I love about Ephesians is how Paul’s depth and brilliance really shine in his letter to the Church at Ephesus. Paul was an intellectual giant and he really let’s loose in this letter. So to bring Ephesians into a less familiar and simpler text we’re going to use The Message version of the Bible. I want to invite you to follow along with us using your favorite Bible app to inhale a fresh breath of God’s Word. Thanks for joining us! At this table we apply what Charles Spurgeon said so well, “Visit many good books, but live in the Bible.” Kimberly’s book list that impacted her faith most in 2024. Welcome to the Table! January is National Human Trafficking Prevention month. Being an advocate for survivors is an area of both calling and passion for me. I was honored to sit at the table with Dr. Jeanne Allert. Jeanne is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the located in La Grange, Kentucky. Jeanne was a pioneer in this field. In 2007 Jeanne was convicted to leave the trappings of a lucrative career as an internet consultant to establish one of the first long term restorative care programs in the Mid-Atlantic for victims of domestic sex trafficking. Her story is compelling. She brings a depth of insight into this very complex atrocity happening all around us. Jeanne has table flipping perspectives that I believe will move you to consider what you can do to be an advocate. She speaks truth bombs to middle aged women, parents, and men in this episode. At the very least she will inspire you to begin to see women with fresh eyes of compassion. Reflections and Dreaming
Welcome to the Table! I’m excited to kick off season 3 with Twila Brown. We’re easing into January by taking some time to reflect on 2024 and dream about 2025. Coming out of 2024 it was important for me to release a long exhale. I needed to get my heart, body, and mind back into a good working rhythm. Our conversation will give you a little bit of insight into how we both do this. I hope it helps you think about the gift of time God entrusts each of us with. It may not be January 1st, but by God’s grace every day affords us a fresh start. Rejoice in the Lord!
Welcome to the table! We’re wrapping up the series on The Church at Philippi. I tried to bring some new perspectives on Philippians to the table. This book is a crowd favorite among followers of Jesus or as we call Him, the Table Flipper. I have needed every word of this letter. Philippians 4 is pretty well known around the Church. We love this chapter which we know best starting at verse 4. I have probably talked more about verses 1-3 more than you’ve ever heard over the last 8 episodes. I believe these verses are the backdrop for the entire letter. I don’t know many people who are thankful for conflicts. I for one am thankful for Euodia and Syntyche. Thanks ladies for inspiring Paul to write this letter. Philippians 4 Acts 15:36-41, 16:1-40 Ephesians 6:18-20 Isaiah 9:6 This is the final episode of season 2. Thanks for joining us at the table in 2024! Flipping Tables will be back in January. We will keep following the Table Flipper and learning more table flipping perspectives in 2025. To Know Christ
Welcome to the table! This episode has Twila and I gathering around Philippians 3. Some call this chapter the most loved chapter in the letter. I truly fell in love with Paul’s letter to the Church at Philippi in this chapter. However, the most searched verses in Philippians are ones from chapter four. When I think of one verse that has had the biggest impact on my relationship with Jesus, hand’s down it’s Philippians 3:10. Thanks to Beth Moore! Beth taught this verse from the Amplified version many years ago at a conference in Cincinnati. This verse changed the way I prayed. Paul’s aim became my aim. Recently, I have been in circumstances that have caused me to dig deep into my joy within reservoir. It was God’s perfect timing for me to sit at the table with my good friend and God’s good Word. Untangling
Welcome to the Table! I invited Twila to co-host this episode. We discussed how Philippians is helping us navigate life right now. If you’re craving an honest conversation where a couple of Jesus followers are trying to apply Paul’s letter to our lives, this is the episode for you. We might use more words than you would or maybe you want more. Let this conversation springboard you to conversations around your table. We talk about untangling and being squeezed from inside the church and from the world. These are not new problems. Reading through the Old Testament while working in Philippians has reminded me of this. We’re happy to have you at our table! Humble Example

Humble Example
Welcome to the table! In the fifth episode in our study of Philippians we take on Paul’s exhortation to seek unity and apply humility to all of our relationships. Easier said than done! It seems everywhere we turn there’s a headline or a conversation about how divided we are as a nation. The Church isn’t doing much better. Kimberly and I try to stay in our lane. We talk about our struggles with self and with pride. Honestly, our side is pretty bleak until we read the beautiful verses about the example of Christ. The Church at Philippi’s lack of unity led to this incredible theological statement about Christ. This is pretty deep water for me to try to teach on so I mostly bring us to the edge of it to behold Christ’s greatness and triumph. I may not be able to grasp the depth of this well but it makes my heart sing! These verses will surely be your bright spot for this episode. Welcome to the table! This is the fourth episode in our series on Philippians. Kimberly joined me for the second half of chapter 1. We tried to get into the anxious feelings the Church at Philippi was having listening to the letter. All they wanted to know was how Paul was doing. What a relief for them to find out that in spite all of that had happened to Paul in the five years since they had seen him, Pau was still advancing the gospel in spite of his chains. A frosty welcome from the church in Rome or being chained to a guard couldn’t sideline Paul from sharing Christ with whoever was in front of him. Are we doing the same? This is our time to carry the great commission to the ends of the earth and to the people right in front of us.
