She has enjoyed a diverse career in small animals, large animals, mixed practices, management, private consulting, and academia. She is currently the Practice Management Coordinator for Appalachian State University and Veterinary Practice Coach with Veterinary Mastery. When possible, Beckie deploys with the ASPCA Disaster Recover Team and Animal Balance Spay Neuter services for underserved communities, and other veterinary service organizations dedicated to reducing the stray pet population. Beckie is currently the President-Elect for the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America and serves on the Board of Directors for the Collaborative Care Coalition. Beckie is proud to be a founder of the Veterinary Industry Giving Tree, a 501 c3 created to provide holiday assistance for veterinary professionals and their families and is co-host of Veterinary Viewfinder Podcast.

AVTE in Conversation with Tricia Gorham Graduating from St Petersburg Junior College in 1991 with an AS degree in Veterinary Technology, I began work in a small animal veterinary clinic locally where I became the technician manager for the hospital. I began teaching for St Petersburg College in 1996 as an adjunct instructor while continuing my work in the veterinary hospital. Shortly after beginning as an adjunct, I decided to further my education and received my Bachelor degree in 2005 from University of Central Florida in Vocational Education. After taking on a full-time role with the college, I furthered my education once again and received my Master’s degree in teaching with an instructional technology specialty from National University. Currently I serve as the instructor in charge for the College of Veterinary Technology at SPC where I am responsible for AS degree program both face-to-face and online. I am active in several committees to further the role of the veterinary technician nationally including The Florida Veterinary Technician Association as certification chair, NAVTA during the original organization of the VNI, the CVTEA as a committee member and the VTNE committee. I currently maintain a clinical relationship weekly to maintain my skills and to remain current in my field. In this episode of AVTE Attitude learn about: Bringing wellbeing into veterinary technology program curriculums. Why is it important to teach students about wellbeing? Modeling healthy behaviors for students. How adding wellbeing into curriculums develops skills such as communication, conflict resolution and leadership. Rebecca Newman’s passion for wellbeing began when she was a college student working with adolescents with substance use disorders. While pursuing graduate work in clinical psychology, Newman worked as a therapist, primarily focused on anxiety and depressive disorders as well as eating disorders. She also worked at the Princeton Center for Leadership Training designing and implementing health-related peer leadership programs. Always an enthusiastic animal lover, Newman became a credentialed veterinary technician in 2016 and combined her passions for wellbeing, education, and veterinary medicine in her role as Student Services Coordinator and then Student Affairs Director at Bel-Rea Institute. She strived to enhance the wellbeing of students, faculty, and staff through teaching, programs, and individual sessions. Newman served on the Board of Directors of the Colorado Association of Certified Veterinary Technicians (CACVT) from 2018-2022.. Newman and her husband live on a farm in rural Colorado with their 17 well-loved animals. Her education includes: Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey B.A. in Psychology and English from Case Western Reserve University A.A.S. in Veterinary Technology from Bel-Rea Institute of Animal Technology

In this episode of AVTE Attitude with Meri Kosman and Tammy Ege learn about: The importance of participating in SCNAVTA for students and programs. What does being a SCNAVTA advisor entail? How to encourage student involvement. Incorporating SCNAVTA into online and hybrid programs. Meri Kosman (DuRand) began teaching in the Veterinary Technician program at DCTC in January 2018. She graduated from Globe University in 2011 and interned and worked at the University of MN Research Animal Resources until 2018. “Biomedical research was my life before teaching! I am a certified veterinary technician and have been certified since 2013. I have my Laboratory Animal Technologist certification (LATG) and I volunteer on 10 different organizations within the veterinary technology field including: NAVTA, SCNAVTA, AAVSB and most recently AVTE. Meri has had articles published on Antibiotic-induced Disruption of Intestinal Microbiota Contributes to Failure of Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, In Vivo Application and Localization of Transcranial Focused Ultrasound Using Dual-Mode Ultrasound Arrays, and has been featured in ALN Magazine. She loves drag racing up at Brainerd raceway, participating in pinup contests and attending car shows. She also enjoys going up to the cabin with her husband Troy, and two kids Shelby and Axel. Tammy Ege, CVT, MS Assistant Professor of Veterinary Nursing Director of Veterinary Nursing Tammy Ege graduated from Wilson College in 1994 with a B.S. in VMT. She then went on to attend the American College of Applied Science and graduated with a M.S. in Companion Animal Behavior Analysis and Counseling in 2015. Tammy worked at the Shippensburg Animal Hospital from 1994-2009 and she has been teaching at Wilson since 2009. Tammy has been involved with the SCNAVTA Committee since 2017. She is also active in her state veterinary association (PVMA). Tammy has been published twice in JAVTE and presented several times at AVTE conferences. Tammy spends her free time with her 16-year-old son, husband, French bulldog, and whippet at the lake on the boat, kayaking, or swimming or hiking the trails around Raystown.

Sam Geiling is a credentialed veterinary technician, Navy veteran, and educator. She taught for over a decade in many areas of veterinary technology including her favorite, laboratory techniques. She helped build the veterinary technology program in Hawaii, established the Hawaii Vet Tech Association, and worked to pass legislation to recognize registered veterinary technicians in Hawaii. Sam serves as co-chair of NAVTA’s Government Relations Committee to support each state in their legislative goals for veterinary technicians. In her new role as project manager at Animal Policy Group, she will continue to advocate for vet techs and make advancements in veterinary medicine. Ashli Selke is an Instructional Technologist for the Veterinary Nursing Distance Learning (VNDL) program at Purdue College of Veterinary Medicine. With over 10 years in the profession, she brings a breadth of knowledge to the table and experience from working in many different areas of the field and multiple locations throughout the country while being a military spouse and NAVY Veteran herself. After receiving her education and becoming a credentialed veterinary technician Ashli began her climb in Association Leadership. Serving on the Arkansas Veterinary Technician Association Executive Board as Director of Marketing and State Representative also during this time she began her involvement in the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America as the District 8 Representative to Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. In 2018 she received the Arkansas Veterinary Technician of the Year award for her contributions to the profession. Currently Ashli is very involved in the state of Indiana, as the President Elect of the Indiana Veterinary Technician Association and is the RVT Board Representative on the Indiana Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. She also holds leadership on the national level as being the Immediate Past President of NAVTA. During her tenure as president she created NAVTA’s Government Relations Committee and now serves as the NAVTA board liaison for that committee, which has been active in over 20 states in the last year, helping state veterinary technician associations achieve various goals in the area of governance such as title protection, achieving credentialing and working with legislators to support and oppose high level veterinary initiatives that impact the profession. Her passion is advocating for veterinary technicians/nurses and enhancing the profession of veterinary medicine as a whole. She started as a faculty member in the veterinary technology program at Becker College and four years later, was recruited by her alma mater, Mount Ida College. While at Mount Ida, she was tenured faculty and served as program director, then as department chair of the veterinary technology program for 25 years. As a member of the UMass Veterinary Technology Major faculty, Tracy teaches Veterinary Parasitology, Veterinary Management, and the Senior Seminar. Tracy is also the coordinator for the UMass Veterinary Technology Major Internship Program and the advisor of the student chapter of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America. , BA, LVT, VTS (ECC) Vice-Chair, CVTEA Kelly Foltz is a 2006 graduate of Athens Technical College with an associate of applied technology degree in Veterinary Technology. She joined the Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians and Nurses in 2012. Kelly is employed full time at the Wilfred and Kate Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital at Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to her work at Auburn, Kelly is also a lecturer and author. She is a member of the AVMA Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities and served on the AVMA Task Force on Veterinary Technician Utilization in 2019. In her free time she enjoys renovating her 100 year old farm house in rural east Alabama, reading, spending time with her quarter horse gelding Billy, and taking naps with her five pit bull terriers. Recorded: December 14, 2021 brings a broad range of experience - the military, law, public health, veterinary medicine - to his current leadership position as the executive director of the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC), located in Washington, D.C. Dr. Maccabe received his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from The Ohio State University in 1981 and 1985, respectively. He began his professional career in Jefferson, Ohio, working in a mixed animal practice with a primary emphasis on dairy herd health. Commissioned as a public health officer in the U.S. Air Force in 1988, he managed the preventive medicine activities of several Air Force installations and directed programs in occupational health, communicable disease control, and health promotion. Dr. Maccabe completed his Master of Public Health degree at Harvard University in 1995. The same year he became chief of the Health Risk Assessment Branch of the U.S. Air Force, responsible for directing the health risk assessment program for environmental restoration activities throughout the Air Force. He remains a public health officer in the Air Force Reserve, currently assigned to the School of Aerospace Medicine at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where he is a public health instructor and consulting epidemiologist. This is Dr. Maccabe’s second appointment at the AAVMC; his first, as associate executive director, followed his completion in 2002 of his Juris Doctor degree from the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona. He served the AAVMC until 2007. Following that, he served as a liaison at the CDC, coordinating policies and programs between the CDC and the U.S. FDA. He holds memberships in many professional organizations, including the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Bar Association, the American Veterinary Medical Law Association, and the District of Columbia Veterinary Medical Association.
