Ep. 33: The Unexpected Lessons I Learned Through My 5-Year PhD Journey In this solo episode, I share an update on my life over the past six months, including the completion of my PhD—a journey that began in September 2020 and took me five years to finish. My research focused on the political relationship between the U.S. and Japan after the catastrophic 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. My research follows the case of a joint-military project between the U.S. military and Japanese Self-Defense Forces known as Operation Tomodachi that later developed into a U.S.-Japan "friendship" organization known as the Tomodachi Initiative. As a Japanese and American woman with roots in Sendai, this project was deeply tied to my identity and family history. But as I navigated the challenges of academia, I also faced moments of self-doubt, stress, and the question of whether I was living for myself or for the expectations of others—especially my mom, a former professor who inspired me to pursue higher education. In the midst of the PhD journey, I discovered life coaching, a path that felt more like home. This episode is about embracing your truth and learning to live a life that’s authentic. Ep. 21: Feeling like you're not enough? The lie that we are sold in society There is this big lie that we are sold in society and that is if you work really, really hard, sacrifice everything, hustle all day everyday, and make the safe, ‘logical’ or ‘rational’ decisions – you'll reach a point where you will finally become fulfilled and satisfied. But, do you ever reach this point of true fulfillment based on the job, house, or partner? Why do you feel like it is still not enough, you’re still not doing enough, making enough, or enough as a person? The cycle never seems to stop. The psychology of not enoughness has been really interesting to me lately, because I feel it constantly, I see it everyday, and my mom modeled this behavior to me growing up. When you were growing up, how often did you catch your parents relaxing, slowing down, and being content and comfortable? If your upbringing was anything like mine, success always came before nourishment--and grounding and receiving weren't part of my toolbox for navigating life. As I've continued in my healing journey, though, I've learned that the balance of masculine and feminine energies is what allows us to take action in our lives with intention and sustainability. A major focus of the work in Flowing with Fire is to integrate your masculine and feminine energies. Ep. 18: Unraveling my mixed race identity, in between Japan & America, healing wounds through radical self-acceptance & compassion "What are you?" or "No, but really where are you from?" These questions have followed me my entire life being mixed race. Growing up in Montana, I was insecure about my Japaneseness. When I moved to California for college and saw more diversity and an appreciation towards Japan as a country, I began to embrace my Japanese half more. The actual reclamation of my identity took place when I moved to Japan 5 years ago. Everyday, I'm confronted with my 'otherness' in Japan, and have learned that owning who you are comes with embracing the discomfort of not feeling enough and getting curious and non-judgemental about those feelings. I've battled with this concept of never being enough American or enough Japanese based on my appearance, "cultural competence," or lack of language ability. The thought "because you don't (look, talk, act, etc.) this way enough, you will not be accepted or loved" would race in my mind all the time. This is a core wound that I've done deeper work around through journaling, meditating, coaching, and therapy. I learned that the attachment I placed on being enough in Japan or being enough in America was all socially conditioned. The person I thought I needed to be and the box I thought I had to fit into was never going to be the answer to my problems. It actually took me farther and farther away from myself. This was a big moment in my inner work journey - the realization that what I've been yearning for all this time was a sense of authenticity, an unshakeable knowing in who I am, the complete and radical acceptance of Self. Most of all, unconditional love for myself. This was a fun reflective episode to record, and beyond excited to be coaching people wanting to step more into their authenticity & live more purpose-filled and soul-led lives.
