What will Recovery look like in North St.Louis?... With Charles Jaco, Michael Wesley Jones and Tim Person.
Episode 187 of Tangazo, attempts to describe what, “Recovery” of North St.Louis might look like in years to come. ----- Charles Jaco, award winning broadcast journalist, joined Tangazo commentators, Political consultant Tim Person and St.Louis American award winning Sr. Editorial Columnist, Michael Wesley Jones, along with your Tangazo host Hank Thompson, for a lively and engaging conversation, on the aftermath of the May 16th tornado, that struck St.Louis. ----- Ours was a compelling discussion, on what needs to be done to revitalize, the north side of St. Louis, following the May 16th, tornado that destroyed some five thousand homes and businesses, mostly located in North St.Louis. ----- We all agreed that there isn’t a “one size fits all” definition of what “recovery” means, in this context and that revitalizing the north side of the city, has not been a priority for several decades,as the area continued to decline.----- The May 16 tornado, has forced city leaders, state and federal officials,to look at what needs to be done to make the Northside, a viable part of St. Louis city, once again. ----- We concluded with the agreement that “recovery” of North St. Louis, involves much more than restoring structures, that were destroyed by the May 16th, tornado. ---- Tangazo can found on Spotify and Apple podcast platforms.

186. Tangazo!: Tornado Response
St. Louis 6th Ward Alderwoman Daniela Velazquez and Social Justice activist Reverend Darryl Gregory Gray, were my guest for this 186th episode of Tangazo.----- Our discussion focused on recovery efforts going on city wide in the aftermath of the May 16th tornado, that killed 5 people, injured dozens, damaged and destroyed some five thousand homes and businesses, mostly in north St. Louis. ---- Alderwoman Velazquez, of the 6th ward that suffered little to no damage from the storm, moved quickly to support her fellow alder persons on the North side, who’s wards suffered the brunt of the tornado. She set up a collection center in the 6th ward to provide basic supplies, for the victims of the storm and delivered the much needed aid to O’Fallon park, to be distributed by the Action group. ------ Social justice activist, Reverend Gray and his Clergy Coalition have been busy distributing food and supplies, wherever needed and are coordinating their efforts, with the Urban League. ------ We all agreed that new StLouis Mayor Cara Spencer, has responded to this massive crisis, as well as she possibly could and has not shied away from accepting responsibility for any mistakes made, in the city’s response to the tornado, are the on going recovery efforts.------ Tangazo is recorded at Delmar Divine

Tangazo Episode 185 was literally , the quite before the storm, as we resumed the Tangazo podcast, on this past Friday May 16th,at Delmar Divine. ---- We opened by paying tribute to our late friend and frequent Tangazo Commentator Linda Lockhart, formerly of the StLouis Post Dispatch, St. Louis Public Radio and St. Louis American American Newspaper. Linda was an award winning journalist and a cofounder of the GSLABJ, also she was a friend, who will be missed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Linda’s, family and many friends. ------ Tangazo also paid tribute to the late former St. Louis Alderman, Freeman Bosley Sr.. Tangazo cohost Tim Person, had texted me about his passing, earlier Friday morning. Tim speaks passionately, about his longtime friendship with Freeman Sr. and his close relationship with the Bosley family. ------ We all agreed, Alderman Freeman Bosley was a gifted politician, who served his 3rd Ward with dedication, integrity and a passion recognized by his constituents. Sr. served close to 35 years on the St. Louis Board of Aldermen, his son Brandon Bosley, was elected to represent the 3rd ward, when Sr., retired from public office. ------- His daughter Lakeysha Frazier Bosley, serves in the Mo. State Legislature. Bosley Sr., was also father of St.Louis’s first African American Mayor, Freeman Bosley Jr. That was the end of the”quiet,”that was followed 40 minutes of a raucous discussion involving the the total eclipse of black political leadership in St.Louis city government. Where does the blame lie,for the loss of black political leadership, that resulted from Mayor Tishaura Jones’s disastrous campaign for reelection, losing by some 67%, to now mayor Cara Spencer. Most people agree Jones’s defeat, sank incumbent St. Louis Comptroller Darlene Green’s,chances for reelection, she lost by 4 percentage point. There was also disagreement again,”vigorously,” on what we should expect from, newly elected StLouis Mayor, Cara Spencer Of course, none of us knew during our spirited political discussion, about the devastation and destruction that would follow later that evening,as a tornado struck St. Louis city, resulting in nine deaths, injuries, power outages for thousands and homes destroyed in the central corridor and north St. Louis. -------- Our hearts and our prayers go out to the families of the deceased and to all the victims of the horrific weather tragedy, that struck StLouis last Friday, May 16th. ---- Tangazo, episode 185, wishes to thank Yusef Scoggin and his staff for welcoming the Tangazo podcast and crew to Delmar Divine. -----
