#134 - Gary Lachman - Touched by the Presence - From Blondie’s Bowery and Rock and Roll to Magic and the Occult 2026 is a year when the wheel is turning in a big way, and I have the honor of speaking with Gary Lachman shortly after he’s turned the big seventy; his own significant turn. Gary is a writer and musician, he was a major influence in mid-1970s as a founding member of the rock band Blondie Blondie and other bands. In the 1990s, he transitioned to full-time writing, producing influential works on mysticism and occultism. This intro is inspired by wikipedia but the book we speak about today is a much more accurate and detailed "presentation" - as we speak of his book that is a memoir of magic, rock and roll, and becoming who you are! It is called "Touched by the Presence: From Blondie’s Bowery and Rock and Roll to Magic and the Occult" published november 2025 by Inner Traditions. In the publishers intro it says about Gary that he is a prolific author and lecturer on consciousness, counterculture, and the Western esoteric tradition. The big question about how we went from big music business to that of an esoteric writer, is what the book we speak about, will answer. And. Here we are in the beginning of 2026 talking in way about the forces than can be controlled and those which cannot. At least these my after-reflections. Here are some clues about what you will be tapping into with this wonderful interview with Gary Lachman: -The true self beneath layers of sleep, social conditioning, and optimization -why Gary wrote this memoir differently than his other books: not commissioned, no plan, written during a difficult period as a way to assert and protect his sense of self -a key turning point in 1975: discovering Colin Wilson’s The Occult while living on the Bowery and playing with Blondie, and how that book became the doorway into consciousness studies and the esoteric -R.D. Laing and “the sane response to an insane world”: family double-binds and gaslighting -the “false world” theme through existentialism and Gnosticism: gnosis as direct felt knowledge, the demiurge idea, and modern parallels like post-truth -"You’re poking your finger through this paper wall… it was just scenery, but you had accepted it as reality, and suddenly you realized you could do that" -You might know the name that’s on your passport, but who is that person? -the explanation on Gurdjieff’s core teaching that is about waking up from “sleep” or mechanical living: -The purpose of the Work (also called the Fourth Way) was to break habitual, unconscious patterns that keep people functioning automatically and Gary personally tried this discipline, and also Aleister Crowleys. -systems of esoteric psychological development -many people (including himself) first encounter the Work through Ouspensky’s writing, not through Gurdjieff directly -books like "A New Model of the Universe "opened entire fields for him: the idea of an esoteric current running through history -Gary is honest about having gone through a hard time when writing this book and as a related theme I ask him to pull up a poem he write when teenager, that I (Mannah) relate to personally. I was surprised he had it in his memory, and could recite it so well - look forward to that part of the interview!!! At least if you also know that feeling of "what is there to tell"... Centaur refers to a distinct class of planetoid between asteroids and TNO/KBO*. There are so many of them and this episode is meant to inspire you to -rather than give up in overwhelm- to develop a personal and direct relationship to- well some of them! We tend to shape the experience with story into a form that makes sense, is comfortable for ourselves, and presents us in the best light to others. In the case of psychosis, and other exceptional and anomalous experiences, the experience threatens to overwhelm story. In these circumstances, the obvious recourse is to go to the ‘experts’, perhaps the doctor, who has a ready story based on the medical model. You are ill. We can treat you." (quoted from Isabel Clarke, Conflicted Stories. A case of expanded reality.) But there is another way..... a way of understanding the mind as permeable, porous and the self being something we create. WELCOME to a rich episode with psychologist Isabel Clarke, who has many years of experience working at the intersection of spiritual emergency and psychosis - with expanded consciousness. Psychosis and spiritual experience both involve entry into another reality – a reality that is integral and vital to human life. As Isabel Clarke points out, this realm can be loving and expansive, but it can also smash the self. A key factor is the ability to move in and out of these states voluntarily. Everyone on a spiritual path encounters challenges, and in this chapter of TAP we meet author Oholomo, who talks about rather than transcending or letting go, we can welcome and fully embody them- so that its energy can be liberated and expressed in the present. When we awaken DOWN into life it begins with a Descent. The call to the Below can take many forms and we each have our own personal experience of it. Like Oholomo says in this book, "Awakening the below": "Once we turn toward the call, whether through our choice or not, a chasm will open up and we will be drawn down into its darkness. This process is never a perfectly step-by-step linear one, and everyone’s experience is unique. Some people find themselves having dramatic mystical experiences when moving through the Below, while others have more of a gradual unfolding. Some people experience high levels of absorption whereby their entire reality seems to be shaped by the Below to the exclusion of all else. Others are able to maintain a wider, more holistic perspective that allows them to do the work of integration as they go along. Awakening the Above and Below may happen sequentially or simultaneously, or perhaps all mixed together." People, you really don’t want to miss this one—especially if you’ve known darkness in your own life. My hope is that it inspires you to go deeper and experiment with a model that isn’t about disidentifying from the darkness, but about fully sinking into it. Join us as we are speaking about karmic constellations with Yael Eini, developer of the Karmic Constellation method The Karmic Constellation method by Yael Eini has spiritual roots, as it draws from Yaels experience in energy healing and family constellation work,. What we talk about today is a method to trace karma, those old patterns we carry without even knowing why. In her book, Karma Healing, Yael shows how past-life traumas and unresolved soul contracts show up in our relationships, our fears, our repeating life themes. She writes on page 30: "The purpose of karma is soul growth. When we meet someone, the interaction we create with them is karma. It motivates us, it teaches us, it allows us to accumulate experiences, and it helps us to develop both as human beings and as souls. And yes, encountering the other can be painful, even very painful. At the same time, this pain is not a punishment; rather, it is an invitation to learn. The person may not learn, but the soul learns." This is SO aligned with Evolutionary Astrology where we see the birth chart as a map of the soul’s intentions, some call it a karmic blueprint. We can see the memories of previous incarnations through archetypal patterns. We interpret the chart related to evolutionary journey of the soul, so that placements describe past-life dynamic, especially through the lunar nodes and planetary aspects to them, but really all of the chart are soul memories. That's why I am fascinated with Yaels work, because she has a method of working therapeutically with a past life story.
