Ananda Mahony: Beyond Painkillers - The Nervous System, Nutrition & the Real Roots of Chronic Pain

Ananda Mahony: Beyond Painkillers - The Nervous System, Nutrition & the Real Roots of Chronic Pain
Today, I’m joined by someone whose work I’ve admired deeply—Ananda Mahony. Ananda is a Naturopath, Nutritionist, Pain Educator, and Lecturer at Torrens University, helping groups and individuals resolve chronic pain and complex health issues. She’s studied human nutrition at a post-grad level, completed a Master’s in the Science of Pain Management at the University of Sydney, and is a proud member of the Australian Pain Society. Now, if you're a health practitioner like me, you've probably felt this too—that heartbreaking moment when a patient tells you they can no longer garden, walk, or travel because pain rules their life. They’ve tried medications, seen multiple specialists, and they’re still suffering. You feel powerless. You question what else can be done. We know the evidence for pain medications is limited. The side effects—depression, fatigue, opioid-induced hyperalgesia—often do more harm than good. And chronic pain isn’t just physical. It lives in the nervous system, in trauma, in beliefs, in relationships, in the gut. That’s why it’s one of the hardest conditions to tackle alone. So how do we support people who are stuck in this pain loop? Enter the brave and brilliant Ananda Mahony—who brings clinical experience, academic insight, and deep compassion to the space of pain healing. In this episode, we go beyond the pills and protocols to explore the foundations of real relief—nervous system regulation, nutrition, sleep, attachment patterns, and the biopsychosocial lens of pain. You’ll walk away with a new understanding of how pain develops, how it becomes wired in, and what we as practitioners—and humans—can do to gently unwind it. Let’s dive in. Prof Julia Rucklidge: Transforming Mental Health with Nutrition
Welcome to our podcast, where we explore the powerful impact of nutrition on preventing mental health issues. What if there was a way to treat mental health conditions that didn't rely solely on traditional psychiatric medications, with all their limitations and potential side effects? In this episode, we have the privilege of speaking with Professor Julia Rucklidge, a clinical psychologist and Professor of Psychology in Christchurch, NZ. She is a TedTalk speaker and author of "The Better Brain," which explores the limitations of traditional psychiatric medications and proposes a new paradigm of mental health through nutrition.I feel a special connection with Julia and her work as she has lived in 2 places that are dear to my heart, NZ and Canada where I have family. Mental and emotional disorders can result from disordered brain biochemistry, and traditional psychiatric medications have limitations such as treatment resistance, variability in recovery rates, relapses, and side effects. Despite this, these disorders remain an epidemic today, and some argue they are on the rise. By the end of this episode, you'll discover · a bold new paradigm of mental health that breaks away from traditional methods and explores the role of nutrition in optimizing mental health especially acute stress, emotional dysregulation and mood disorders (ADHD) · the benefits of a balanced diet and individual responses to micronutrient therapy. · difference between a balanced diet and supplements and why single nutrient research is underwhelming compared to a combined nutrient approach (at the right doses) · how to measure the effects of micronutrients, the onset of action, and the recommended duration of trial. Yvonne Coleman: Unveiling the Secrets of Drug-Nutrient Interactions
Welcome to The Enlightened Pharmacist podcast. Does what you eat affect your medicines? There have been awareness of drugs or medicines and how it affects the way we absorb micronutrients through our experience with statins, iron and thyroxine supplementation, This is because medicines and foods sometime get broken down by the same pathway and can interact. An example is grapefruit juice and some statins: too much grapefruit juice can increase the amount of some statins. Calcium can reduce the absorption of thyroxine and so on. My guest today, Yvonne Coleman has taken a step further and collated a database to put all the research together. In this episode, we explore the topic of drug-nutrient interactions, a sophisticated interconnection that exists between what we eat and how our bodies absorb medications. Here are some of the key takeaways from our discussion: · We delved into the mechanisms by which medicines and foods can interact, with specific examples of grapefruit juice and statins, and calcium and thyroxine. · Yvonne shared valuable insights on how to identify if a drug-nutrient interaction is occurring, and what to look out for when taking certain medications. · We also explored resources available to healthcare professionals and patients to support the management of drug-nutrient interactions. · Yvonne’s 3 healthy things she does on a daily basis to optimise her health (hint: think Jerusalem artichokes) Remember to check out the show notes for links and resources on this topic. If you’re a regular listener, today’s podcast is a follow-on from Prof Grant Schofield’s introduction to neurotransmitters that impact mental health.
