Women's Work - Why Underrecognition is a Huge Problem, Even in a Female-Dominated Industry with N. Chloé Nwangwu
I had the absolute honour of sitting down with my brilliant friend N. Chloé Nwangwu, a brand scientist with a background in international conflict resolution. If you haven’t heard expressions like “the invisibility tax” or “underrecognition”, you need to be paying attention to the work Chloé is doing. We talked about why your brand values are important but also why nuance is important in conversations around values, and whether having that nuance will allow you to maintain your audience’s ear and effect more positive and progressive change. We also talked about a ton of other stuff… Maintaining boundaries when doing emotional labour, and what that looks like versus what happens when you don’t do that (as a wedding vendor); Never Have I Ever and Mindy Kaling’s general greatness Why being a woman in a “female-dominated industry” isn’t all it’s cracked up to be when we’re still operating under patriarchal, white-supremacist, and highly capitalist systems The S.N.I.F.F. test for vendors to help you figure out if your marketing is feminist, and how you can improve it Chloé has generously created a for y’all with links to some of the articles we discussed and a detailed breakdown of S.N.I.F.F. - plus links to locate her. Highlighting Your Values as a Wedding Vendor with Photographer Sonja Siikanen
I interviewed Sonja Siikanen (they/them), a queer, feminist wedding and boudoir photographer from Finland, who was recommended to me by two separate Lovebird Listeners! Here’s what I asked them about: Sonja’s own wedding, and… Creating safer spaces Sharing core values with your guests What it means to live in a “top” country for queer folks The tiny queer scene in a small country like Finland How the bar for what counts as “good” for queer folks is so low it’s literally on the floor Why marriers should lean into their values when planning a wedding… And, why it can be challenging to be inclusive when planning your wedding Sonja’s take + my evolving opinions on styled shoots The increasing popularity of boudoir shoots and why Sonja loves them for being super empowering, especially for marginalized people, and for the celebration of all bodies (when we share them publicly). The Right Way to Negotiate With Your Wedding Vendors (Without Pissing Them Off)
This episode is an answer to a question from a listener (now client!) who asked about the wedding tax and negotiating with wedding vendors. I couldn’t fit the answer in an Instagram story, so here’s an almost hour-long episode about it! Here’s what I cover: What is the wedding tax, and can it be justified? I look at arguments from both advocates and critics and give my take on it; I also talk about some of the more common economic models of wedding planning, breaking down commissions and kickbacks, and explaining how the percentage-based model works, giving you, as always, my unfiltered opinion on how things are done BTS; The do’s + don’t's of wedding vendor negotiation (haggling) including: Templates for the first and second email you’ll send during the process; Red flags to look out for; Who you could consider negotiating with; Understanding that when you pay less, you should expect to get less… And reasons you might be eligible for a reduced rate! Why you shouldn’t ghost your potential wedding vendors (and what to do instead) How not to be a red flag and operate in good faith when negotiating with a vendor! Lesbian Weddings: From the Proposal to the Honeymoon, with Bride Navy Founder Ty Sintrell
Ty Sintrell (she/her), founder of Bride Navy, joins me to talk about how lesbian weddings are different and special, but also kind of the same as straight weddings. This is something the wedding industry has to learn to hold in balance, both that queer weddings are special and unique, and, also, that queer weddings are, first and foremost, weddings! And they can and often will have all of the trappings of hetero weddings. Here’s what we chatted about: We talked briefly about Ty’s own wedding that she’s planning with her fiancée, and I offered some advice about getting their seemingly very different visions to line up together; How the proposal happens, and how couples decide who will propose; Lesbian wedding outfits (surprise surprise - both Ty and I think you’ll be best off going custom!); Every aspect of the day itself, from how you’ll walk down the aisle to a rousing and surprising game of Keep or Toss with reception traditions; The many things that don’t change, no matter who is getting married, including the challenge of scheduling your honeymoon and the importance of a day of coordinator; Gratitude journals (I like the 5 Minute Journal); How to find gay friendly vendors, and how to share that you’re a gay friendly vendor! Carrie-Ann Loves Boundaries

Carrie-Ann Loves Boundaries
Something I help my clients with over and over is boundary-setting (and boundary-maintaining, arguably more challenging). Boundaries are going to come up when you're wedding planning, in part because the simple act requires a renegotation of entrenched family dynamics. Dealing with toxic family or family drama while planning happens to nearly every couple. In the episode, I address the ones I see most commonly, and respond to a listener question about managing divorced parents who can’t stand each other. It’s a huge topic to cover, but boundaries are a very important part of my life, and the way I support my clients, from figuring out what the wedding of your dreams even looks like, to deciding on the perfect guest list (and how to manage input about it) and determining how involved your parents will even be in the wedding planning. But always, always - I want you to be planning to be *married*! So figuring out how to defend your new family and be a team are integral to my work (and boundaries are a major part of being a solid team). This isn’t the first time I've spoken up about boundaries, and it won’t be the last - and I know there are haters out there but they’re not my people. ;) Find me on , where I answer all of my DM'S, and check out to work with me (and to grab my free Wedding Budget Workshop). I sat down with her to talk about… How she developed her expertise, and how she turns it into wedding content that is both hilarious and educational The traditionally narrow view of weddings (who they are for, what you can wear, how it should look) versus the more expansive view that welcomes a variety of wedding styles, of marriers, of budgets, etc. Finding plus size at every price point, and the benefits and challenges that go along with each budget The pressure of wedding dress shopping and diet culture in the wedding industry Queer wedding fashion! It’s such a good episode. Go give it a listen! And then come follow us on Instagram. Find Alysia Cole Styling on , on , and on her . At the end of the episode, Alysia mentioned her new offer, a styling consultation call, which you can check out . How to Have a Chill Wedding (and Marriage) with Jaime Moar
In this episode I talk to Jaime Moar, a past client of mine who is fascinating and has many passions (and many businesses), but is a particularly interesting guest because she is a yoga teacher and alignment coach. We dig into: How she planned her wedding with more ease, with her partner and both of their families very involved, and what specifically helped keep her chill How Jaime and her husband, Duncan, made sure their wedding represented them and their values, and what impact that had on their experience The DIY aspect: what they did, whether it was worth it, and what stressed her out more than anything We got deep into our own marriages, and what’s working for us to help us be on the same page as our partners And, if you know Jaime or me, then it won’t surprise you that of course we weaved in a little bit of Human Design. In this episode, we talked quite a bit about Jaime’s wedding planning Journey with me, so here is the link to learn more about that offer: You can book a free, 20-minute, no-strings chat with me: Jaime is currently fundraising for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society of Canada - you can support her efforts here: . Wedding Planning for Pregnant People + Parents with Birthworker Katie Painter
This is the first guest episode I ever recorded for this podcast, and I chose my bestie and phenomenal birthworker Katie Painter (who was my own doula!) to be my guinea pig. We talked about everything and anything related to planning a wedding while pregnant and having a wedding with your kids present, including… Unsolicited advice versus expertise and how the unique situations of your wedding plan, your pregnancy, or really any big life change are best guided, and how to honour that unique-to-you situation with boundaries Balancing parenthood and entrepreneurship How your wedding plan might change with a baby, and when a new parent might feel ready to have their wedding How it might feel to be planning a wedding while pregnant, with a baby, and with a toddler And at what ages Katie and I think we could manage having our own kids as part of the wedding If you’re pregnant, you’ll definitely want to check out Katie’s and follow her on ! Fuck. Pinterest.
In this episode, I tear Pinterest a new one, and then I share my tips for creating a wedding mood board that will actually be useful to marriers (and their vendors). I mention two IG accounts I love for out-of-the box wedding inspiration: @offbeatwed @rocknrollbride I also love searching for backgrounds and design ideas. And the two sites I use for mood boarding are for palettes, and for your actual mood boarding. Find me on Instagram and check out my website Music is Blackout Romeo by The Spin Wires.
