January 29 - Exodus (Part 2)
This class continues our study of Exodus. Pastor opens with a look at the Red Sea and where it is traditionally thought that the Israelite crossing took place. But then shares new information that points to a possible different location. It’s an exciting look at circumstantial evidence like trade routes, to a peninsula in the Gulf of Aqaba, an underwater “land bridge,” and the possibility of having discovered that Mt. Sinai maybe isn’t where we traditionally thought it was. Pastor shares discoveries of interesting artifacts, petroglyphs, circular stone patterns which may be the possible remains for the Israelite camps in the area, 12 pillars which may possibly be 1 for each tribe and more. They are things that really bring a fresh look to this familiar story of the exodus. As we continue with the story of the exodus we see the Israelites beginning to complain and God provides them with manna, food for their daily lives. Pastor goes on to expose the “on the third day” words that are often read throughout the Bible. “On the third day” God showed the Isrealites fire on the mountain. From the mountain they heard trumpets and they heard God speaking which caused them to become very fearful. They tell Moses to go to the top of the mountain to meet with God. This is when Moses received the 10 commandments. Exodus 20 - the first words of the commandments are, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” Some people see this as the first commandment. There are several numberings of the 10 commandments. The important thing is not how they are numbered, but rather that we listen to them. Moses is on the mountain for 40 days and while he’s up there the people, with Aaron’s help, build a golden calf harkening back to the Gods of Egypt while they were in slavery. God wants us molded and shaped not by the culture or it’s influence, but by His Word, His Spirit and His Truth. After the golden calf was completed they have a festival. The story is found in Exodus 32. And Moses comes down and sees this party they are having in celebration of the Golden Calf. Moses throws down the tablets and breaks them. And then he goes to the golden calf and grinds it up, puts that grounds in water and tells them to drink it. When Moses confronts Aaron, Aaron says, “… I threw the gold into the fire and out came the calf.” God is angry and says He’s going to destroy the people, but Moses pleads for God not to do that, if someone has to die that God would take it out on him and not the people and for the honor of God’s name, that God would not destroy a nation He had delivered. Many do die, but God is gracious and merciful. They had turned their back on God, but God doesn’t turn His back on them. And we see the goodness of God. Exodus is filled with Jesus. There are so many fingerprints of the Lord Jesus in this book - we see the story of the Israelite deliverance reenacted by Jesus. EXODUS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT “Tabernacled” - John 1:14 “Egypt” - Matthew 2:15 (Hosea 11:1) “Exodus” - Luke 9:31 “Baptized” - 1 Corinthians 10:2 “Passover Lab” - 1 Corinthians 5:7 “Blood of the Covenant” - Luke 22:20 (Exodus 24:8) Pastor closes with a look at worship of God and the plans for the tabernacle, the furnishings, and how they were to worship including rules and regulations God had put into place. Join us next week for Leviticus, a book many think is nothing but boring and filled with rules and regulations, but it actually shows us the foundation of true worship and of God's plan for His people. January 22 - Exodus (Part 1)

January 22 - Exodus (Part 1)
This week we begin our exploration of the book of Exodus. We will spend 2 weeks examining this book that is the foundation for the biblical faith, that lays out the fundamentals of worship of the One true God and shows and tells us who He is, how He works, what He does and what that means for us. In the book of Exodus we see God moving in a powerful way to save His people, to deliver them from bondage. We also see that as God moves throughout history He makes Himself known and in each incident they point to an even greater reality. As we look at this book we will look at it with the intent of seeing Jesus clearly portrayed in its pages and in its events. Pastor digs into the dating of the events and the chronology of this book sharing many of the differing views including tackling the 200 year difference of the dating and also taking a dive into the Egyptian chronology which has been used as a standard of time. Pastor uses several examples with some interesting possible new dates based on scholarly examples, biblical evidence, archeological discoveries and the chronology of other ancient peoples. When these are placed against the traditionally accepted Egyptian chronology they may expose possible errors in the Egyptian chronology and thus the dating of the book of exodus events. Pastor believes what we will read in Exodus is true and that we need to critically examine what others are saying when we have such a real genuine and true account revealed in the book of Exodus. Moses is the main character in this book. As the book starts we see the growth of Joseph’s family growing from 70 to over 2 million Israelites in a couple hundred years. The Egyptians are beginning to feel threatened by the number and their solution is to kill the Israelite boys being born. When Moses was born his family puts him in a basket (an “ark” covered in pitch) and place him in the river. Moses is found by pharaoh’s own daughter and she takes him as her son. At 40 Moses flees for his life from Egypt to Midian. For the next 40 years Moses works as a shepherd in Midian. Then at Mt. Sinai the Lord, in a bush on fire, speaks to Moses and at 80 Moses is told that God has chosen him to set His people free. Thus begins the familiar story of God using Moses to set His people free. Pastor also poses the possibility of Mt. Sinai being in Median and not the place we have traditionally accepted as its location. -Pastor shares some interesting recent archeological evidence that puts the traditional location into further question. Then Pastor shares The 10 plagues: 1. Blood 2. Frogs 3. Gnats 4. Flies 5. Livestock 6. Boils 7. Hail 8. Locusts 9. Darkness 10. Firstborn (Passover event) Israelite firstborn were saved by taking the blood of a lamb and putting it on the top and sides of their doors. Pastor talks about the Passover and that it is celebrated with four cups as part of the Passover meal based on Exodus 6:6-7. Cups: 1. “I will bring you out.” 2. “I will free you” 3. “I will redeem you” 4. “I will take you” Join us again next week for week 5 and part 2 of our study of Exodus. January 15 - Genesis (Part 2)
The genealogies and the scriptures have been proven over and over again to be reliable. Up until recent times the Hittites in the Bible have been viewed as made up and a group of people that never was. Then recently ancient tablets were uncovered and we discover an empire that we did not know existed - it was the Hittite empire. What was discovered is that what the Bible has said for millennia is finally proven true in modern times. Today we know the Hittites as a massive empire, closely connected to the Trojans, but Scripture had it right all along. God’s promise to Abraham: Genesis 12:2-3 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Through these words God established a nation from which the Messiah would come. Pastor talks about how the verse above has seen vivid fulfillment throughout the centuries. Pastor shares a brief history of the Jewish nation. God promises Abraham and Sarah a child. Then we read the story of Abraham and his nephew Lot and we see that no matter where Abraham moves to he builds altars, worships God and shares about God. He is an evangelist!. Pastor shares how we see God communicating with His children: dreams, visions, angelic visitors, appearances, and by an audible voice. God continues communicating throughout the scriptures. God is a god who communicates with His people and His word can be trusted. At the age of 100 God gives Abraham and Sarah a child, Isaac. Genesis chapter 22 sets the stage for everything that happens in the rest of the scriptures. As we move into studying the story of God asking Abraham to offer his only son as a sacrifice. God is testing Abraham but He is also giving us the Gospel of Jesus 2000 years before Jesus comes. At this point Pastor shares the “Principle of First Use.” A principle that sets the future definition of a word throughout the rest of the Bible based on how that word was used its first time in the Bible. Under this concept - the first time the word “Love” is used in the Bible Is Genesis 22:2 “take your son - your only son whom you love.” Under the principle of first use, the definition of love is in the context of a father taking the son he dearly loves, his only son and gives him up to help others. No that’s an ah-ha moment! Pastor continues with the story of God asking Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac by sharing all the pieces of this story that show us a picture of what is to come through Jesus - God’s only Son as the sacrifices for the sins of all people. God has left a trail all through the Bible so that we can see the reality of His love for us in Jesus the Messiah. Abram / Abraham Isaac / “laughter” Jacob / Israel 12 sons / tribes We close with the story of Joseph, a story that is one of the greatest stories in the Bible. God takes what the enemy seeks to use for evil and turns it around for good. An amazing story of God’s love and redemption.. Jesus is at the heart and center of the Bible and He is at the heart and center of Genesis! Join us again next week for week 4 and part 1 of our study of Exodus. January 8 - Genesis (Part 1)
This study takes us from Creation to the Tower of Babel. Genesis is the first of 5 books that Moses compiled records of the actions and directions of God. Pastor shares that “toledoth” - ancient colophon - may indicate key evidence was passed down through generations. This is eye witness material that Moses used to write the Torah - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Toledoth is interpreted in our Bibles as “this is the account….” Or “These are the generations….” A computer analysis verifies these 5 books of the Bible were written by one person and not a group of people, giving credence to Moses having written all 5 books. Pastor states that the New Testament is revealed in the Old Testament scriptures and Jesus is the main character - even in Genesis. Genesis 1-2 creation Genesis 3-5 the fall Genesis 6-9 the flood Genesis 10-25 Abraham, the father of all who believe Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created. God is The Creator. There is One God, yet He uses a plural form for Himself. Verse 26, “let US make mankind in our image.” God is speaking in the plural. In the first three verses we see creation through One God, by His Word (John 1:1 - Jesus), with the Spirit moving over the water. three yet One. God is One but in a way we cannot understand He is One - Unity of three. Three in One. Pastor believes in a literal 6 day creation and accepts God at His word. Genesis 3 - the fall - until the fall it was a perfect world. Along comes the devil who leads people away from God. The devil still uses those same tactics today. Satan’s Garden strategy: - Doubt the Creator “Did God really say” (3:1) - Deny the consequences “You won’t die!” (3:4) - Deify ourselves “You will be like God…” (3:5) In Chapter 3 we already see the Gospel of Jesus: - They hide and God comes looking for them (for God so loved the world - He comes looking for them) - One coming through the seed of a woman - God kills an innocent animal and gives them the skins as clothing. Already in chapter 3 we see a picture of what Jesus will do. We see the principle that sin can only be atoned for by the shedding of blood. And an innocent victim dies to cover the sins of guilty human beings. Pastor shows an interesting graphic with the Life Spans Before and After the Flood. The first 10 generations lived a LONG time. After the flood the length of life becomes less and less. Pastor talks very descriptively about the flood and how it was cataclysmic. The world of that time deluged and destroyed. Gone. Pastor also shares a book, “In the Beginning,” by Walt Brown, who put together an hypothesis about the flood starting with a massive explosion, Genesis 7:11 “… all the springs of the great deep burst forth and the flood gates of the heavens were opened and rain fell on the earth 40 days and 40 nights.” Brown, a scientist, hypothesizes that it was a massive fissure in the earth’s crust that released above the earth from waters deep inside the earth. He suggests that this water from inside the earth shot forth by a splitting of the earths crust and shooting water into the atmosphere with massive ice dumps in the polar regions that flash froze living creatures. Brown also suggests that where giant mammoth have been flash frozen and buried in ice, it means temps dropped around 200 degrees in an instant. Something incredible had to happen! It is the most horrendous destruction the planet has ever experienced. Noah’s family is saved. He knew and trusted the Lord and was described as righteous. Noah and his family were spared and from them the earth was repopulated. And then post-flood sin returns - “let us build a tower up to heavens and make a name for ourselves.” So God confused their speech and scattered them. Pastor closes class by sharing a story from the book, “The Discovery of Genesis,” by C. H. Kang. Kang was a Pastor during the opening days of WWII. He shares copies of the book of Genesis in Chinese. And from there the story of what Kang discovers is an amazing testimony to the worship of a Creator who is El Shaddai. It’s an amazing story of discovery and revelation! January 1 - Introduction
Week 1 - Welcome to the Introduction of Pastor Dodge's study, The Bible in a Year. Pastor gives a captivating overview of the Bible and what we will discover in the next 52 weeks! Unsheathing the Sword - Is the title of this Bible in a year class. What does Unsheathing the Sword mean? Why this title? “Unsheathing” is a word men will understand. Our culture has wandered far from God’s truth and one of the things we need to reclaim is godly men. Because God has called husbands and fathers to spiritual headship, responsibility before God for our families. What’s happened today is the “sissy” fiction of the faith - that it’s only for old ladies, but God’s desire is that all know Him and that we allow God’s word to take root in our lives. God’s word is the Sword of the Spirit and a sword is best used when it is out of its scabbard - out of its sheath. We invite all to join us in unsheathing the sWord! The Bible tells us that the Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. (Ephesians 6:17b) We are to use it, learn from it and allow it to do its work in our hearts and minds. We are encouraged to unsheathe God’s Word, to put it to use in our lives. Hebrew 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Often we use God’s Word as a butter knife instead of a sword. But we need more than a dollop - God’s Word cuts right to the heart. It is not intended to spread jelly, instead it is intended to reach to the deepest depth of our souls and to expose our insides to the character of God. God’s Word is living and active. His desire is that we know Him and His desire is that we experience Him in our lives. Pastor then shares a personal story of God’s Word cutting right to his heart as a 14 year old. In the scriptures what we are doing is meeting a Person. We are meeting the Author. It’s not that we are getting to know the book, but getting to know the One is it’s author. God’s Word is powerful. It teaches us endurance and to go where God leads, God’s word is written for our benefit. The stories and teachings lead us closer to God, they show us who God is, they show us His character, they teach us of Jesus, His Son. God’s word gives us hope, confidence and builds our faith. Pastor encourages us to read God’s word daily and to read it seeing the full picture of what God is showing and teaching us. Pastor takes us through several encouraging verses: And he encourages us to take God’s Word seriously. We are encouraged to absorb God’s Whole Word as it is intended to encourage and strengthen and train. Luke 24:27, 45 Acts 17:11 Acts 18:28 Acts 26: 22b-23 Acts 28:23 Romans 15:4 1 Corinthians 10:6, 11 11 Timothy 3:16 We are prompted to step out and read the Bible. Pastor shares encouragement to read the Bible sharing that it takes about 80 hours to read through the Bible at a doable pace. He challenges us to make a plan of reading the Bible and to follow through. If your desire is to read through the entire Bible, Awake offers a Reading Plan/Schedule that can be followed and will follow along with Pastor’s teachings. With our schedule you will be reading the book or books that Pastor will be teaching on. It’s a 52 week plan coinciding with the weekly teachings. Our goal is to meet the Author and allow His Words to impact and transform us.. Pastor compares the Hebrew Bible - the Tanakh to our Bibles. The Hebrew Bible is the Old Testament. We have 39 book in the Old Testament but the Hebrew Bible has 24 books in the original text. That is because we have divided several of the books into 2 parts. Additionally they divided their books into sections: Law (Torah) Genesis Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy Prophets (Nevi’im) Joshua Judges Samuel Kings Isaiah Jeremiah Ezekiel “The Twelve” (minor prophets) Writings (Ketuvim) Psalms Job Proverbs Ruth Song of Songs Ecclesiastes Lamentations Esther Daniel Ezra Nehemiah Chronicles Join us next week as we begin our study of Genesis.
