Bible in a Year with Pastor Chris Dodge
This class continues our study of Exodus. Pastor opens with a look at the Red Sea and where it is traditionally thought that the Israelite crossing took place. But then shares new information that points to a possible different location. It’s an exciting look at circumstantial evidence like trade routes, to a peninsula in the Gulf of Aqaba, an underwater “land bridge,” and the possibility of having discovered that Mt. Sinai maybe isn’t where we traditionally thought it was. Pastor shares discoveries of interesting artifacts, petroglyphs, circular stone patterns which may be the...

This week we begin our exploration of the book of Exodus. We will spend 2 weeks examining this book that is the foundation for the biblical faith, that lays out the fundamentals of worship of the One true God and shows and tells us who He is, how He works, what He does and what that means for us. In the book of Exodus we see God moving in a powerful way to save His people, to deliver them from bondage. We also see that as God moves throughout history He makes Himself known and in each incident they point to an even greater reality. As we look at this book we will look at it with the...

The genealogies and the scriptures have been proven over and over again to be reliable. Up until recent times the Hittites in the Bible have been viewed as made up and a group of people that never was. Then recently ancient tablets were uncovered and we discover an empire that we did not know existed - it was the Hittite empire. What was discovered is that what the Bible has said for millennia is finally proven true in modern times. Today we know the Hittites as a massive empire, closely connected to the Trojans, but Scripture had it right all along. God’s promise to Abraham: Genesis 12:2-3...

This study takes us from Creation to the Tower of Babel. Genesis is the first of 5 books that Moses compiled records of the actions and directions of God. Pastor shares that “toledoth” - ancient colophon - may indicate key evidence was passed down through generations. This is eye witness material that Moses used to write the Torah - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Toledoth is interpreted in our Bibles as “this is the account….” Or “These are the generations….” A computer analysis verifies these 5 books of the Bible were written by...

Unsheathing the Sword - Is the title of this Bible in a year class. What does Unsheathing the Sword mean? Why this title?
“Unsheathing” is a word men will understand. Our culture has wandered far from God’s truth and one of the things we need to reclaim is godly men. Because God has called husbands and fathers to spiritual headship, responsibility before God for our families. What’s happened today is the “sissy” fiction of the faith - that it’s only for old ladies, but God’s desire is that all know Him and that we allow God’s word to take root in our lives. God’s word is the Sword of the Spirit and a sword is best used when it is out of its scabbard - out of its sheath. We invite all to join us in unsheathing the sWord!
The Bible tells us that the Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. (Ephesians 6:17b) We are to use it, learn from it and allow it to do its work in our hearts and minds. We are encouraged to unsheathe God’s Word, to put it to use in our lives. Hebrew 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
Often we use God’s Word as a butter knife instead of a sword. But we need more than a dollop - God’s Word cuts right to the heart. It is not intended to spread jelly, instead it is intended to reach to the deepest depth of our souls and to expose our insides to the character of God.
God’s Word is living and active. His desire is that we know Him and His desire is that we experience Him in our lives.
Pastor then shares a personal story of God’s Word cutting right to his heart as a 14 year old.
In the scriptures what we are doing is meeting a Person. We are meeting the Author. It’s not that we are getting to know the book, but getting to know the One is it’s author.
God’s Word is powerful. It teaches us endurance and to go where God leads, God’s word is written for our benefit. The stories and teachings lead us closer to God, they show us who God is, they show us His character, they teach us of Jesus, His Son. God’s word gives us hope, confidence and builds our faith.
Pastor encourages us to read God’s word daily and to read it seeing the full picture of what God is showing and teaching us. Pastor takes us through several encouraging verses: And he encourages us to take God’s Word seriously.
We are encouraged to absorb God’s Whole Word as it is intended to encourage and strengthen and train.
Luke 24:27, 45
Acts 17:11
Acts 18:28
Acts 26: 22b-23
Acts 28:23
Romans 15:4
1 Corinthians 10:6, 11
11 Timothy 3:16
We are prompted to step out and read the Bible. Pastor shares encouragement to read the Bible sharing that it takes about 80 hours to read through the Bible at a doable pace. He challenges us to make a plan of reading the Bible and to follow through.
If your desire is to read through the entire Bible, Awake offers a Reading Plan/Schedule that can be followed and will follow along with Pastor’s teachings. With our schedule you will be reading the book or books that Pastor will be teaching on. It’s a 52 week plan coinciding with the weekly teachings.
Our goal is to meet the Author and allow His Words to impact and transform us..
Pastor compares the Hebrew Bible - the Tanakh to our Bibles. The Hebrew Bible is the Old Testament. We have 39 book in the Old Testament but the Hebrew Bible has 24 books in the original text. That is because we have divided several of the books into 2 parts.
Additionally they divided their books into sections:
Law (Torah)
Genesis
Leviticus
Numbers
Deuteronomy
Prophets (Nevi’im)
Joshua
Judges
Samuel
Kings
Isaiah
Jeremiah
Ezekiel
“The Twelve” (minor prophets)
Writings (Ketuvim)
Psalms
Job
Proverbs
Ruth
Song of Songs
Ecclesiastes
Lamentations
Esther
Daniel
Ezra
Nehemiah
Chronicles
