October 2, 1999: Live it Up Baby!
Welcome back to Queen Shh Podcast, it’s your girl Opal Ellyse, back at you with episode 29!! We are back in the 90’s for this episode!! This entry is called “Live It Up Baby” and it’s all about a full circle moment/epiphany and I even allude to the royalty piece so it’s perfect for Queen Shh. The dawn of a new year presents an energy of renewal and offers space for reflection but it’s often more about shedding what didn’t serve us in the past, especially the past year. For me it is imperative that I honor that this year in a real way, a raw way, in a way that is transformative and dynamic. Themes: Presentation, preparation and care. Talk about a new years message! OcIf there is one thing I feel is a given that I can improve it is that. When I tell you the care, heavy on the self care is a WHOLE THEME for me this year, this decade, this life. Knowing you have grown and being presented with the mirror that shows you is such a gift, such a beautiful feeling too. Choosing right, it should be self-explanatory, but not always. WE are faced with so many choices, and this is probably high on everyone’s list right now. So many things at this moment in time feel existential. Politics, wealth, our jobs, how much time we spend on what, our self-care, our stress level, it’s all up for real questioning right now and I LOVE it, it’s like the whole world is reflecting in real time and choosing right matters more than ever. Who can relate? Trusting yourself. This right here is probably the single most theme for me over the past few years, with an emphasis on the last year. Counting on the Divine to provide. This has been the biggest game changer in my life. Financially, spiritually, mentally, physically, and all the places that matter. He will provide. He always does. That’s the cheat code, that’s the major key, that’s the real. Part of being a Queen is trusting yourself on what to let go of and what to go for. - What is your intuition telling you that you have been ignoring because it goes against what you think other people think? - What do you need to trust God to provide for you in this season? - How can you show up in a way that represents all you are and all you are called to be? What changes do you need to make to do that? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. Understanding your past and bridging it to the present (and future) is a gift. Join Opal as she shares wisdom from the past as it becomes present day epiphany and a blueprint for all that is next. Oct. 28th, 2023: Balance
This entry is called “Balance” and there has been so much talk lately about there being no such thing as balance and I believe balance is real and achievable, it just doesn’t always feel or look like what we might think. It’s not often a perfect smooth blend of all aspects of your life, it’s a constant battle and effort as well as a pull and push with surrender and will. Themes: Doing too much. . .I could write a whole book on this one, and I am betting many of you could as well. Creating content. . .for REAL, the kind you are born to create. New levels require new strategy AND new MO. Strategy gets all the glory and the cool points, but it’s the execution and the MO that gets it done and gets you there. We cannot elevate to greater by doing the same. Being about my Father’s business this is so much bigger than our perceived balances or imbalances, bigger than what’s in front of us. For me, my dreams are God given and making them a reality is my duty, it requires my faith and it’s why I’m here. Onward!!Thank you for rocking with me on this episode of Queen Shh, and for being a part of my tribe. Part of being a Queen is fulfilling your God given destiny. It is imperative that we trust ourselves and carry out the vision God gave us, with courage and an unapologetic urgency and grace. #Again - When you look back on the past year, do you feel you achieved a healthy balance overall (work/life, family/self, social/stillness, joy/peace, urgent/slow). - What feels out of balance? Why have you prioritized your time the way you did this year? This life? - What can you commit to that will make you (JUST YOU NO ONE ELSE) feel more in balance? Will you? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. September 20th, 2010: Killing Cows and Making Burgers
For episode 27, we are back with an online journal entry, as I have mentioned before, you can follow the breadcrumbs, find my blogspot and enjoy all the tea I’ve served there for years. Or just wait for the good shh to hit Queen Shh Podcast! This entry is called “Killing Cows and Making Burgers”. It comes from 2010, and it was heavily inspired by a line Lady Gaga says to Beyonce in the “Telephone” music video. The phrase stuck with me and it’s a needed check in point for me, so here in 2025 I am checking in on my progress with killing the cows and making burgers. Key themes from reflection on this entry: Listen. God, life, the universe, our higher selves are sources reminding us of who we are and who we are destined to be but also connecting us in ways we never thought possible. Listening to the whispers and then quieting and challenging limiting beliefs can be one of the most rewarding things in life. The prep time is over. . . The moment you arrive is the moment you arrive! So don’t cower or step back when it’s your moment. People want to celebrate you and spend time with you, breathe your air. So, in the words of Mel Robbins, LET THEM!! More than a conqueror. God first, always. There was a quote in a recent sermon that said, “what is explained as strategic is experiences as surrender”. A WHOLE WORD from Pastor Stephen Furtick! That part, that part, that part! I am a creator, a creative and not a robot. I am real. Mind you I wrote this well before all of the AI stuff was hitting, this is 2010 and I’m saying I’m not a robot. Why, because creators know first and we early adopt to things that will stay and remain. Time to take action and make that burger. . .i had a couple setbacks and shiny objects that distracted me. I’ve known longtime that my distractions often come in amazing packages, but the dream is to be lived now. Right now!! And with that, let’s go live them! Onward and upward, the learning will continue and so will the level up! Part of being a Queen is fulfilling your God given destiny. It is imperative that we trust ourselves and carry out the vision God gave us, with courage and an unapologetic urgency and grace. - What whispers are you ignoring? - What would happen if you listened to the whispers and gave it your all? - What and who are just “noise” in your life? How can you filter them out? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. September 12th, 1999: What I've Been Learning
For episode 26, we’re taking it back to the 90s!! 1999 to be exact, and it’s right on time, cue Brandy and Monica! This short and sweet entry is exactly what I am feeling right now. I called this entry “What I’ve Been Learning”, and I am currently in a period of learning and development right now and it’s for sure a blessing but also not super easy. And it’s me who’s making it hard, that’s also part of the lesson, but a hard thing to let go of. Hopefully this resonates with you too, because this is never just for me, there is def something in the air right now. Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Periods of learning and how they feel going through vs how they are appreciated looking back. · Stop worrying about what others think, chyle! This one, it’s such a different beast now than it was back in the day but it’s also the same BS. Don’t fall for the okie doke, don’t believe the hype! · What would happen if I failed? I had a professor once who called me an achievement junkie, in the nicest of ways but that resonated with my soul, and I still think about it often. I am, and my addictions aren’t above anyone else’s just because I am rewarded for them. The pathology is the same. Now, this has served me well, very well and I would not change this aspect of me but understanding in every moment than I am more than what I do or can achieve is an active and intentional process for me. I am worthy just because I am, and not just because of what I do or can do. · I am so secure in my stance on being single and taking time for me to heal from my last relationship and truly no desire to be in one right now because of my focus right now and being in love with my dreams. Honestly, I think more people need to slow down between relationships and heal and then ENJOY themselves, I am in that stage, I really like who I am and my life right now, I don’t feel like anything is missing except maybe more freedom and I hold the keys to that. Part of being a Queen is fulfilling your God given destiny. We have to trust ourselves and carry out the vision God gave us, with courage and an unapologetic urgency and grace. What are part of your destiny are you putting on the back burner despite knowing you need to move on it? Are you overthinking what you think people think about you? – If so stop. Who do you really want to be and how do you need to spend your time to reflect that? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. June 23rd, 1999: Sweet-19
For episode 25, we are taking it back to the 90s!! 1999 to be exact, and if you recall, 1999 was a transition year, not just for me but for the world, you could feel it in the air as we approached the new millennium. There is no doubt that right now also feels like a time of transitioning for ourselves, our circles, our world, and in those times it’s important for us to be centered. To know without a shadow of a doubt who you are, what you believe, and how you want to show up in the world for yourself and others. I made this entry after coming home on a night where I was reminded that some of the stuff we find ourselves doing doesn’t even match who we are. It was another countless night I found myself out at a party, or club, or get together where I did not enjoy myself, and I would have rather been home. Cue Alessia Cara's "Here". Even at 19 I could tell when things were pointless, and I hate spending precious time doing anything pointless. Fast forward a decade and a half later and I can still relate, can you? Key themes from reflection on this entry: Level ups and realizations are often paired, make sure you don’t miss the blessing or the lesson! It don’t take a whole day to recognize sunshine or bs. . .you usually know right away that you don’t want to be in a place, or that you should not have said yes, or that you are built for so much more. Sometimes it’s that we graduated from spaces that once filled us, or that we once thought filled us. Knowing and sticking to what is important to you will NEVER steer you wrong, as long as you are really following what God put in your heart and what He said. Not spreading myself so thin that I don’t represent well. If I cannot show up as my best self, or at least a stellar representation, then I do not have the time to go. I’ll use the time to get right and be there for the next one. Now that right there is some QUEEN SHH!!! Part of being a Queen is knowing who you are and representing that at all times and not entertaining anything less. - What are the things in your life you are doing that no longer serve you? - Are there things or activities in your life that never served you, but you just go through the motions? - Who do you really want to be and how do you need to spend your time to reflect that? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. July, 14th, 2001: Keys
For episode 24 I share an entry from way back in the year 2001, when I was 21 years old. I had finally got my keys for my dorm room for the second summer session at UW- Parkside after being without a room for the entire first session! I was grateful then and I am grateful now, if you have a safe, warm, clean place to say, you are winning!! I don’t take for granted any of the necessities or the luxuries I have because I know what it’s like to not have, and I know so many go without. On the same token, I want it all, small joys lead to big joys, be grateful for what you have now and BIGGER and better will come, and it will be right on time. Over the last couple weeks keys have played a significant part for me, one in giving some up on behalf of someone else, and the other in getting keys that were once a wild dream. Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Keys are so symbolic, if you see a key or keys in your dream, it represents opportunities, access, control, secrets, freedom, status, authority, power, knowledge and responsibility. Check my "I Dream in Color Dream Journal" for more meanings. · God blessing you around the blessing, or an anointing of ease for what you are doing. The path of least resistance is often the right one. · Having your own and the lasting impression that made on me. It’s one of my biggest drivers, I am blessed with community, but part of my role that I love is that I am someone people can count on and I contribute to the whole in many ways. · God always has me, won’t He do it, yes He will!! · Everything happens for a reason. . .even if it feels wrong, hurtful, or backwards in the moment. Trust God, trust the process! #Surrender · The tip I have been on for a long while: me and God, God’s plan!! That’s my focus, everything else is just noise. Part of being a Queen is knowing that every single moment may not feel like royalty, but if you look around and remember who you are, the moment and surroundings will rise to meet you. Keep your faith in God and who He made you to be, Queen! - What are the things in your life that are matching your royal? - What people, places, things are you settling for that you may need to reevaluate? - What things are yours or could be that you don’t quite feel worthy of/for yet? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. July 28th, 2019: Pedestals, I Think Not!
In this 23rd episode we visit the year 2019, almost 6 years to the day of recording this. For this one we are taking another look at my online diary on Blogspot, and it’s short and sweet gem but oh so on time!! This is an episode all about how sometimes we put people, places or things above us and then we get caught up in the hype and end up lowering ourselves. It usually takes something to remind us of who we are and when we do, it’s on!! I just got back from a Atlanta, and ATL was just what I needed to remind me of who I am and I am excited to be back acting accordingly! Key themes from reflection on this entry: · "Birdies" to set down: I have a few birdies to set down right now. Some super close to me, some more every day, some at work, some in my personal life. And again, it's not about them, it's about me prioritizing what I need to do and how I spend my time. There is no prize for breaking yourself for something that isn't even your path. · Tripping over people and places: As a poet, I love words, I love slang, I love all the multiple mearings words have, the new and ever evolving meanings we give them and that is the space I love to play in with writing. When I see the words I wrote I think about all the mulitple meanings of the word “trippin", and it's a trip! · Be around the best to be the best and don’t ever settle. What brought me out of this “tripin” was actually a trip. I went to ATL for a conference, and this is one of my favorite conferences of the year, and when I tell you that I felt like myself again, my boss self, my right to be here self, my real self! It was amazing, and it’s because of the amazing people I was around. I don’t believe in coincidences, I believe in God, and He was all in that place. He’s always got me, so grateful for this reminder, so grateful for this snap back! A queen lowers herself for no one and only bows to the King, don’t get it twisted, and if you did, fix your crown! What/who are some “birdies” you need to set down? Are there places where you lowered yourself or shrunk to fit in? If so, how will you take your space, power and peace back? Why do you think you put those people/places/things on a pedestal? What will you do to prevent it in the future? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. Understanding your past and bridging it to the present (and future) is a gift. Join Opal as she shares wisdom from the past as it becomes present day epiphany and a blueprint for all that is next. May 3rd, 2015: I've Always Had a Slingshot
Episode 22! For this one we travel back a decade and are in 2015, May 3rd to be exact. I called this one, “I’ve Always Had a Slingshot” and then a subtitle of “Opal Ellyse Tomashevska is out of poverty for good: in JESUS name!! Coming out of a poverty mindset was one of the biggest hurdles for me. It’s a hurdle for many and it’s not as easy as it looks, even though it looks hard as hell! Why do you think there are so many rags to riches stories? Because it is one hell of an adventure, and most don’t make it! At the time I wrote this, I had been a comfortable-ish paycheck to paycheck for about a year. Bills are paid, on time for the most part, my credit however sucked because there was nothing extra to put toward anything and no one really willing to give me a card to help build. Shout out to Fingerhut though, because they were the only ones and were there when I needed them. High prices and all, but they let me build credit when no one else would. I still keep the account just off of GP! I want share this entry with you because it was a milestone on my journey and I think sometimes we think things need to be perfect or impressive before you can give a testimony and that’s the exact opposite, you praise Him and you enjoy and you continue to get BLESSED, BEYOND MEASURE!! Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Count up your blessings, who are your Jonathans? In the Bible, Jonathan was a model of true friendship and loyalty. · Trading in what you have now for your next! · Wealth mindset is a real thing! You don’t just shift to get out of poverty or into riches, you keep needing to shift it at every level. It’s absolutely a faith thing; you move then God exceeds you. That’s it. Sounds simple but it's also some Jedi shh LOL · Rich forever. Trust in GOD, He's got you. Also, it’s Manna, don’t waste it trying to store it up. Trust and go BIG, baby!! A queen doesn’t live in lack, she lives in abundance. Know who you are and what you require, then add what you desire and make it so. It’s your queendom! - Are you living in abundance in all areas of your life? - If there are areas where you feel lack, what is the root cause, what limiting beliefs are you holding onto? - What does your next look like? What about your next after that? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. Understanding your past and bridging it to the present (and future) is a gift. Join Opal as she shares wisdom from the past as it becomes present day epiphany and a blueprint for all that is next. February 14th, 2000: Not Chains, Change
In this 21st episode we visit the year 2000 for an entry called “Not Chains, Change”. This entry is the final entry in my last 1990’s journal and it appropriately revolves around my goals for 2000. The air was buzzing, change was alive, and we could feel it. It didn’t feel like just another year or decade, it was a new millennium, and we embraced the change and wanted it to change us too. Not Chains but Change when it comes to perspective is the power we all have to use this as a catalyst to become who we are created to be and honor and ENJOY who are right now. Because right now we are already so much, so blessed and so incredibly beautiful and part of that beauty is knowing we are becoming so much more. . .by choice. We have to let go of the chains, real and imaginary, societal and self-inflicted and become more free than we have ever been, regardless of circumstances. There are two things I am feeling wholeheartedly right now; one is getting back to the basics, and the other is freedom over illusion. Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Get way closer to God and improve my lifestyle accordingly. Then and now, then it was more about changing behavior, now it’s about shifting my mindset. · Get my niceness back to when it was at its peak. As I read this now, the irony is now and in recently years I feel I am too nice, especially when it comes to business and especially when it comes to my time. · Don’t let people put limits on you and don’t you put limits on what God has for you. · Only eat healthy. . .who isn’t trying for this right now. This is one of the key components to getting back to the basics. · Never put myself or anyone else down, this goes with the nice piece above. And words have so much power. · Stay away from people who don’t make me feel good and can’t add to me. · Present myself the way I want to be seen at all times. · Learn from my mistakes quickly, yup I was doing this before corporate America made it OK. · Qualify for every one of my ’95 goals. Yup crazy sexy cool is in full effect, 30 years later!! A queen isn’t bound by anything but herself. . .make any and every change necessary to make that your reality. - What are the goals you have for yourself now? - Which one(s) of your goals are lifelong goals for an ever evolving and continuously elevation you? - How will you adjust your language once you understand that words have power? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. April 26th, 2015: In the Studio
We are at the 20th episode, already!! Yass thank you all for rocking with me! This entry is called “In the Studio” and it’s from 2015 when I hadn’t been in the studio for a bit and I had just got done recording some heat!! It was so validating because it was one of those times where current life takes our focus off our dreams for a minute and we wonder if our big dreams were wrong, moments like this remind us of who we are and that our destiny isn’t going anywhere! Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Pay attention to the moments, places, and people that fill your cup, and those that leave you more energized than you were when you started, that’s your path. · I CAN IN NO WAY ALLOW SOMEONE ELSE TO CONTROL THE PACE OF MY DREAM AND CREATIVE PROJECTS. · Don’t let people put limits on you and don’t you put limits on what God has for you. · To whom much is given, much is expected. This is my life, always. · Pivots and opportunities are blessings, they always seem to come when you have other plans but let them. They come to bless us and grow us into who we are supposed to be, and it’s never just for the one area it appears to be in, work, personal or otherwise. · Manifestation is all up in this, 10 years ago I’m calling out music and books and acting. Now I’ve done them. Look at God!! Queens are born, and if you look back you’ll see your royal traits all a long. Where can you take back the control of your dreams and destiny What things have you called into existance that are now a reality? What and who give you the most energy? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. January 29th, 2000: So Good
For this 19th episode I we are transported to the year 2000! This entry is called “So Good” and it’s right on time because I am just coming off a monster performance and speaking engagement run and this entry was about me just starting to dip my toe in the performance arts and it’s so cool to see how far I’ve come and that some of the same joys and principles remain. It's also fuel for me to KEEP GOING!! I have so much more I want to do and be, this reminds me to continue going after my dreams, I hope it does the same for you! For that and so many other reasons, I’m not giving up on my talents, ever, and I hope you don’t either, God is so good! Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Put yourself in position to see what can be and expose yourself to things that are different or BIGGER than what you are used to. · Your dream is tied to someone else’s destiny. · Friends who support you matter, keep those people as your tribe. · Small gestures can lead to so much more, feel it out, but be open and say yes! · Some things remain the same and it’s so cool to be living a brand that was built so long ago knowing that these pivotal moments felt small, but they led to who I have become and who I am still becoming. · The overwhelming joy that comes from having a body of work is something I wish all creatives could experience. September 28th, 1999: Know
In this 18th episode we are back in the 90s!! 1999 to be exact, and this one is about knowing better and doing better, I simply called “Know”. Everything in this entry goes along with all I am feeling right now and lessons I am learning as well as blessings I am receiving so it’s right on time. Hoping it blesses you as well. Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Know better so do better. Often it just comes down to what you are prioritizing because more often than not, the knowledge is there. · It’s the little things that add up and make your life, they make your health, your wealth, your aesthetic, they make everything. When you let them slide, it begins to show, and more importantly you feel it. Love yourself enough to make the time and prioritize you. The little things are often the biggest things for you. · Patience and grace required for the learning curve. Remember that it is all happening for your greater good, for your evolution and that you will be just fine. · Remember OPP. They are NOT your problems, don’t make it your stress. · Appearance matters. Hate it or love it, it does! · What you know is what it is, don’t try to make excuses or paint things how you wish they were. If you know deep down, than you already know, trust that! · Right where we are supposed to be at all times. . .trust the process, trust your destiny, enjoy your journey. One of the gifts Queens have is “knowing”, yes we be knowing!! - What is your soul telling you? What is your life telling you? - What do you know for sure? ß follow that! Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. April 4th, 2015: He is Risen
In this 17th episode we visit Easter, 10 years ago. Recorded on Easter 2025, we visit Easter 2015 for this episode. For me, Easter is my spiritual new year, and this entry was on point for what I am feeling and experiencing right now. There have been so many wonderful things for me in this season, I’ve been able to do so much for my art over the past few weeks and it has been pure joy! I just wrapped up a couple performances last week, I have one this week which is so cool that I wrote and recorded voice for and I’ll be in-person to watch it on the big screen and the jumbotron at the Kohl Center, and I am rehearsing for 4 upcoming shows and I’m MC’ing an event next Saturday. All great things, all God things and all on my right path. I am being bold, and obeying God is this season and letting go of the things and habits that no longer serve me. I am living my best life, and this is definitely my spiritual New Year season! Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Spiritual New Year’s. · The other foot doesn’t drop, it steps up! God’s plan! · It’s not too late! Who taught you/told you that? God’s timing, not yours. · First Only Different (FOD) Word to Shonda Rhymes · The importance of dreams and taking the time to find meaning. · Don’t give ‘em too much! · Enjoying the journey is the fastest way to your destination. · Stop caring about what you think other people are thinking about you. . . what other people think of you is none of your business. · Easter, cross over! Queens sometimes need a refresh and a reset. It's how we stay regal and stay royal. - What are you doing to renew in this season? - What cross are you carrying that needs to be over? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. September 22nd, 2016: 2 Broke Girls
For this 16th episode, this one is a little different. As every now and then, since about 2008, I make my entries live online on BlogSpot!! Yup, bet you didn’t even know I bloged, I guess it was Queen Shh before Queen Shh. Anyway, this one is a GEM that is SO appropriate for RIGHT now!! It’s the move, it’s the wave, it’s the reminder. I was in a space the night I recorded this that completely filled my soul and it was in complete alignment with the message. #StarsAligned Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Use media, don’t let it use you! I learn from everything! Formal education, on the job experience, books (fiction and non-fiction) music, and of course TV!! If you’re not familiar with the show 2 Broke Girls, get familiar, and thank me later. It’s hilarious and full of lessons. · Challenge your default perspective. Someone taught you those defaults, do they really fit you now, do they fit your future and your destiny? Can you change them, is there more to what you think you have always known? · BIGGER, think, feel, know, see, and expose yourself to bigger!! That’s the message, lound and clear. · Take the leap, JUMP!!! YOU have to be obedient, and it starts with what you believe is possible, then taking that down to what you believe is possible for you. Two very different things. The DOPE part, you can keep leveling up on this, you think you’re at the pinnacle, but you have no idea! · Look for the teachers in your life you may be overlooking because you have put them in a box. Sometimes we assume we know the meaning of something, and we overlook everything else it could be. Sometimes we are too close to people, or we have known them too long so we don’t see all of them anymore and can miss what they came into our lives to teach us. People are beautifully infinite and infinitely beautiful. How dare we think we can limit them to one small schema in our minds, one descriptor or category. See your teachers for who they are, lean in and then learn some more. Don’t forget, you’re also teaching every single person you meet, so carry yourself accordingly. Queens sometimes need other queens to remind them who they are. It’s important that we gather. Doesn’t matter if its virtually, in-person, on a phone call, we just need to share real-time space with each other to remind us of who we are and what we came to do. - What are you doing, thinking, dreaming that needs to be BIGGER? - Who are you great teachers in life? - Who are you teachers in this season? - Is there something you have been thinking about all wrong? Are you missing the point of something that keeps repeating in your life? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. March 14th, 2015: Don't Give 'Em Too Much
This 15th episode we go 10 years back in time and land in 2015, and touch on so many ties into right now. Dreams, decisions, destiny, all the big things and the small things that take up mental real estate. As a creative I often battle with how much I give my 9-5 vs. how much I give my art. Whether I love my job or not, this struggle is real. What I have come to learn though is, it’s even harder when you love your job! And I wouldn’t trade loving what I get paid to do for the world, but I must be super intentional about making sure I leave time and space for my God given gifts and destiny. Who can relate? I wake up, go to be, and spend all the time in-between thinking about my art, my music, my writing, my poetry, that is what I am here for. Now that doesn’t mean I don’t have other purposes and roles that matter and that I love, because I do, but at the essence of who I am, at my core, I’m an artist. Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Use your drive instead of having it use you. This was my prayer, this is my prayer, still. One thing I am super grateful for is my awareness, and I can most often tell when it’s getting to be too much, or if I am too off balance. I challenge the myth that balance can’t exist. · Seek out clues, best practices, and tips for balance from those who are intentionally doing it well and find what works for you. It’s never one-size-fits-all, even for you and your life, so spend some time figuring it out and know it will likely evolve over time. · Dreams, when I tell you this is on time, this is on time!! I just had a dream last night that was super telling! Now, shameless plug for my (available on amazon and my website) but you can see 10 years ago I was not only writing down my dreams, but I was dreaming about writing down my dreams. Dreams are often our first line of defense, or one of the first places we need to listen to the whispers, although most of the time they are not whispers at all they are loud and clear! Dreams can help us see parallels or look for them in our waking life. · Don’t get distracted by what other people want you to do and forget what you came here to do. This is your life and your purpose and journey are unique! · Signs, if you let it, if you listen to the whispers, if you are open, you will see so many signs. Everything in life is coming to meet you and teach you. We tend to put art lower intellectually than other things, when in fact creation is the highest form of intelligence. Queens need to tap into, listen to, and have confidence in their inner voice, infinite wisdom and connection to Source. - What are your dreams telling you? - What part(s) of your purpose are you neglecting? - Where in your life are you not being obedient to the voice of God and to the truth you know deep in your soul? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. New Year, New York: August, 7th, 2001
This 14th episode is one I wrote in New York City. If you peep the date, it was a month and 3 days before 9/11 in NY and it was my first time in NYC and it had always been a dream of mine to go there, what a blessing for me to see it and feel it before that happened. This trip to NYC was truly divine intervention, my friend Anisha (RIP), said that she was going to NYC with her mom, because her mom was moving back from there and they were going to get her stuff. Almost jokingly I said, “Can I come, I’ve always wanted to go to NY”, instead of laughing she said, let me ask my mom. And that was it, I was going to NYC like the next day. After dreaming about this city, spending hundreds of hours in my adolescence watching countless music videos and movies that took place in this city, TV shows like NY Undercover, the Cosby Show, Living Single, I was finally in that city! Let me tell you it was all I ever wanted. I was cracking up as I found this entry because of course I brought my journal and found time to write in it on the trip. Key themes from reflection on this entry: · One theme of my life is having great friends, great people in my life who have been a part in making dreams come true for me. People have made what seemed impossible happen just like that, and I am so grateful for how God has blessed me through the amazing people in my life. I am forever grateful to Anisha for this trip to NYC. · Dreams come true, be ready for them. · Some things you just need to experience, and I’ve said this before in other episodes, but some things really are what you imagine, and the serendipity of it all was amazing. · Realizing you are enough, another thing from this entry was just me realizing that I could hang in NY, that as cool as I thought it was, I was cool enough. This theme is a constant, most of the time we get it, but a reminder is always nice. I mean even my little piece about the guy I had met, ha like I was enough. I just love that because I know that and was coming into my own. · I’ve been to NYC so many times since this, I still get energized from this city and it’s still kind of like a dream every time and each time I am there I am reminded that I belong wherever I go and that I can hang with the best. Cheers to us always meeting our moments! Queens know they are enough at all times and wherever they are, they meet their moments and understand how it shapes them and all they touch. - What moments have you met lately? - Are you ready for your next? If what you say you want was a reality tomorrow, are you ready for it? - Who in your life has made dreams come true for you? How can you do that for others? November 21st, 2014
In this 13th episode we spend some time in 2014, and we get into one of my favorite topics. . . money. And hitting on one of the reoccurring themes of my life and many people’s lives. . . confidence. Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Money and mindset, HUGE!! It starts in your mind. Might sound crazy or whatever but it’s so true. YOU have to think differently about money and wealth before anything can change for you. and it makes sense on a spiritual plane. · Pulling in images to visualize and channeling others to be what you need for yourself in the moment. See it and be it. This can be a tremendously powerful tool. · Not shrinking! I had this epiphany about me and how I shrunk myself because I thought I was not worthy at the time around people with money. When I call out that I did not shrink in this office no matter what they were going to say about my finances this was huge. Not shrinking is part of the game!! · You can do it yourself. Sometimes the test is to just go and do! Show God how much you want it and how much you believe, be obedient and see what great things happen! · Don’t get stuck in anyone’s comfort zone, including your own. You can make the whole word and beyond your comfort zone, so why be restricted for even one more minute? Queens need resources and queens can’t afford to shrink. They must continue to evolve and rise to all occasions and levels. - What makes you shrink? - What are your limiting beliefs around money? - What gives you confidence? Who or what intimidates you or makes you question yourself? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. July 13th, 2000: How I Got Over!
This 12th episode we visit the year 2000. This entry comes to you from me as a 20-year-old between my sophomore and junior year in college. There was so much going on for me at school and at home, truthfully during this time I was still kind of living two lives, one back in the hood at Wexford, and one at school. If I am being honest, I struggled a during those 4 years of college, never in the classroom, that was easy, fun, and I loved it. My struggle was in finding where I fit in society. I craved upward mobility and the future life I dreamed of far away from poverty and anybody’s hood, but I also was proud of where I came from and proud of the little street cred I had built up. Key themes from reflection on this entry: · These journals are for me first, I am only reading a brief piece of this entry because most of this is just for me, at least for now. · Read the signs, listen to the whispers! If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, it’s a duck! Stop trying to make things fit what you want them to be. This notebook had pages of red flags, I can’t even say I ignored them because I wrote them down, but I overrode them and that was a miss. · Stay the course, stay the course, stay the course! · Everything in life comes to teach you something about you and gives you something for your journey. Not matter how good or bad something feels, count it all joy! Queens aren’t easily led astray; they are led by a higher calling and a bold trust in self. - Have you ever almost changed your whole life for a romantic partner or relationship? - With what and where do you need to stay the course, and why might it be hard to do so right now? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. December 20th, 1999: Stars
In this 11th episode we are back in the 90’s for this entry! I just can’t leave them alone! This episode tells a story I have told before and will probably still tell to my great, great grandchildren. It was an absolute turning point in my life and a moment that has since defined who I am and how I show up. In 1999 I was a sophomore in college at the University of Wisconsin Parkside (P-side!). That year brought so much positive change and gave me new and clear outlook on a lot of things. But positive change rarely comes without facing our fears and taking real risks. In this episode I share how one night I did both and it’s helped shape how I am in the best of ways. Queens aren’t led by fear; they are led by a higher calling and a bold trust in self. Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Betting on yourself, my poem called “Winning Bet” is all about that and truly believing in yourself enough to let others see it. · Sometimes it can be harder to do new things or take steps toward your dreams in front of people who know you than strangers. But to be real about your dreams and who you are, you can’t let anyone stop you for your fear of what you think they might think. People think about you way less than you think they do and if they think of you more they are fans and are rooting for you anyway! · Your big dreams may seem a bit crazy to some, but the fact is if we think about it, we are living in many of those big once thought impossible dreams now so anything is possible. When our dreams are so big that they scare us, that’s when we know it’s a God dream, when we know it would be impossible on our own, but we also know we have the favor and the faith to make it happen. Those are the dreams we must pursue, and I often find that in order to get to the big dreams there are steps that come in the form of smaller dreams and opportunities. Doing the work and getting in position now is often what it takes. · Finding the root of our fears. Often the thing that scares us the most is the thing that is closest to our purpose. We confuse our understanding of the vast impact of it with fear. The key is to let that energy move us forward into the thing vs. scare us away. Easier said than done but that is the truth. · Stop 2nd guessing yourself!! “It is our light, not darkness that scares us. . . who are we not to be.” – Maryann Williamson - What is your purpose? - What scares you the most about stepping into who you are meant to be? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. March 19th, 2000: Lemonade
This 10th episode comes to you from the spring of 2000! Whew, like I said last time, chyle what a year! And IYKYK, when I drop those entries from the summer of 2000 get your popcorn!! But until then, this is where we are, March 19th, 2000. Why this episode now? Well, I promised you that I would share some “oh so in love me”, and if you’re listening to this when it drops or shortly after it is Valentine’s Day week. So, I’m giving you a bit of a glimpse of what love has been like for me. . . or at least what it was in the year 2000. This is an entry I wrote on the tail end of my college spring break in Jamaica. If fact, I wrote this in the airport in Montego Bay when our flight was delayed. It was only minutes before one of the best parties I’ve ever been to broke out, but this entry is the calm before the storm, and some short but sweet thoughts I was having about love and my boo at the time. Afterall what is a Queen’s journey without some good love! Key themes from reflection on this entry: · I will write anywhere, when we get times that feel like we are waiting or they are slowing us down, it’s often a gift and time to reflect. · Looking on the bright side and recognizing it in the moment had been one of my superpowers for as long as I can remember. We have so much choice in how we feel and how we choose to look at things. · Let’s talk about what love comes to teach us, particularly romantic love. One of my favorite books is A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson, and in that book she also touches on some of the great teachings and ideas from one of my other favorite books A Course in Miracles, and it points out that in our society romantic love is the love that is held up, amplified, talked about the most, movies, songs, books you name it, but other loves like familial, friendship, admiration are given the back burner. All love is important but there is something special about romantic love and how it impacts other aspects of your life. Questions: - What is or has love come to teach you, particularly your romantic loves? - Are you currently settling or having a great love? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. December 5th, 2000:Time for a Change (freestyle)
This 9th episode comes to you from the year 2000! Whew chyle what a year! I had just turned 21 years old and was in my 3rd year of college. This is an entry I labeled as a freestyle. A freestyle is just pure flowing thought, it usually tends to be a little longer but it’s when I just let the words keep coming and flow until they find their way of telling me what I need to hear. I typically find myself in the state of mind to need to do this when I’m in times of deep reflection, cognitive desinence or I’m just not feeling where I am and it’s time for a change. This entry is a long one, and I promised y’all there would be some tea and this is serving lots of tea! Honestly, I almost can’t believe I’m sharing all I am with you, but if you’re still here with me for episode 9, well you have earned a spot of tea and a deeper peek into all that makes a queen. Key themes from reflection on this entry: · The therapeutic healing of a freestyle, free writing and just letting the words flow out on the page with no format or goal, just a stream of conciousness. · The power of reflection and self-awareness and how you need both for true growth. Journaling became an accountability partner when I had no one I could share my deepest, most unflattering things with. The gift of having this now allows me to trust myself more and realize all of my queen potential. · Honestly my honesty, I just love how honest I am in this entry about what I loved about myself and the things I didn’t. That’s why I say “Queens aren’t made they are born, so it may take some digging to uncover your royal roots.”, because deep down we know, but we don’t always act like it because we believe the lies we are told or the ones we tell ourselves and that leads us to settle. · Don’t settle, ever. I don’t care if its love, or friendship, a job, where you live, whatever. Don’t ever settle for less than what you want and don’t every give more of you than you feel ok with. I didn’t always know my worth, I don’t always now, but there are always moments when we do. Questions to ask ourselves, right now and always: - What is your personal constitution, what means the world to you? - What things have you been too scared or ashamed to be honest with yourself about? Can you write it down, say it out loud? You must do this in order to unlock your fullest potential. Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. January 5th, 2014: Philippians 4:11-13
In this eighth episode, we visit January 5th, 2014, it is the beginning of a new year and a time of reflection and a time when we tend to slow down just enough to take inventory and adjust to get our lives aligned for exactly where we want to go and who we want to be. Inspired by a sermon from Pastor TD Jakes that was also right on time, this entry resonated so well with me right now in the space and time we are in and I’m confident it will resonate with you too. Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Letting go of old systems - If you don’t change the systems, you are in, the environments you are in, how reward and punishments are given in your life, you will likely not change a thing, at least not for long. Real change needs to be an entire systems change. · Systems and addictions - All our addictions, vices, whatever are tied into systems that others or ourselves have created. It’s so important for us to question these systems, these beliefs, to examine our behaviors and our habits. To question systems others have in place, but to do it while being informed, before you question it. · Learning to be content whatever the circumstances. . .Philippians 4:11-13. Read it, say it! August 6th, 1996: What About Your Friends
In this seventh episode, we visit August 6th, 1996, and this is one of the many entries where I mention feeling like I have outgrown my friends and just about everything around me. The funny thing is that I have lifelong friends (including the ones I thought I outgrew in 1996 LOL), and I know how grateful I am for that. This entry is key for highlighting how important it is to give people and yourself a chance to grow together and understand that growing pains will be a part of that. Yet another reason that writing your thoughts down to gain additional perspective and pause real-time is such a blessing and a necessity for living an examined life. Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Never losing sight of your own identity. · Having a keen appreciation for your personal history, heritage and culture. · Making an effort to show up well because we are all representing so much! Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. August 18th, 1999: The Real of Relaity
In this sixth episode, we visit August 18th, 1999, when I had just failed my driver’s test. . .for the 2nd time. Failure can be an extraordinary teacher, especially for those of us who are used to winning. 19-year-old me was frustrated and wondering how this would ever play out in my favor. Spoiler alert, I got my drivers license a week later and all was well. It didn’t harm me one bit to be without a license for one more week, but I did gain additional perspective and practice in dealing with feelings of disappointment and loss. Those benefits have served me well for years. Key themes from reflection on this entry: · Emotions run deep, especially when things don’t go our way, but if we pay attention they run just as deep (likely described as high) when things do go our way. The difference is often the amount of time we spend sitting in those moments. I’ve made a conscious effort to highlight the good just as long if not longer than I replay the bad. Emotions and feelings are energy, and powerful, use them wisely. · Rebirth, a theme for right now and a common thread in my journals. The phoenix does rise from the ashes, there is definitely a clearing right now if you’re paying attention, can you feel it? · Questioning reality and understanding our role and power in shaping it. · Mind body connection and the power of stillness. Questions to ask ourselves, right now and always: Why are we going through what we are going through? What is the meaning? As the path becomes clearer, what things can we let go of? What should be rebuilt and what should remain in our past? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. July 21st, 1999, Lessons from Value in the Valley
Get your popcorn this one is a long one!! It’s only fitting that we kick off 2025 with a full meal and not just a snack. I share never before recorded stories and truths about myself and some healing tips that are sure to bless us all. In this fifth episode, we visit July 21st, 1999, when I had just finished reading the book by Iyanla Vanzant, and 19-year-old me was full of enlightenment and fresh epiphanies. The need for positive change was in the air then much like it is now and the entry hits on key themes below: · Books and authors are powerful teachers and tools, Iyanla Vanzant is a prolific writer and a wonderful healer. I share some lessons from her book and from my life to share the wisdom and pay it forward. “The most powerful spiritual healer, fixer, teacher on the planet.” —Oprah Winfrey · Surrender is one of my words for 2025, and this entry is a good reminder of why it’s important and how it becomes a reoccurring theme for many of us in our lives. · What’s really behind our procrastination? Let’s go deeper because we know it isn’t just laziness or fear. · The reason why prioritizing the needs and wants of others above your own may seem noble but can be a recipe for disaster if we remain in that mindset too long. I share my own stories of how this came to life for me in the form of panic attacks years ago and how I continue to work to maintain and build a state of peace where joy can flourish. My only question for you this episode is, “who can relate?!” Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. June 13th, 1999: Do We Need a Resolution? New Year's Eve Special Episode
I decided to make a special episode for NYE because one of my NYE traditions is to journal, so I wanted to honor that by dropping an episode of Queen Shh with a fitting entry. In this fourth episode, we visit June 13th, 1999. If you will recall, 1999 was a very interesting New Year's Eve, does anyone remember Y2K? That's when many thought all computers would fail because we were moving to the year 2000 and systems were not equipped to support it. However, for the most part we were just fine :) The episode hits on the themes of how important it is to have positive, inspiring people around us and how investing in ourselves in this way is key to your Queen Shh. The media we allow into our lives can have just as big of an impact and we need to use it wisely. Finally, I get into the new "O world order" I had for 1999 and why it still fits perfectly 25 years later. I share the real and the raw as always, to connect us to ourselves and each other as only the truth can. In 2025, what is your new order? What are key things that you have already created for your way of life? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. Each week she shares an entry and ties it to current events and relevant topics of conversation. Royalty is living in your legacy while you're still here. April 4th, 1996: Black College Tour
In this third short and sweet episode, we visit April 4th, 1996, when I along with several other high school students from my hometown (Madison, WI) went on a Black College tour across the southern United States. It was my first time in the south and I share what it felt like to step on Spellman’s campus for the first time, how my girls and I almost risked it all for some boys we met earlier that day, and why seeing really can mean believing. I challenge us to be intentional about finding ways for today’s youth to still experience IRL moments that have them in awe and wonder despite having the entire world online. To this day I am still discovering things that expand my world and deepen my faith. What have been pivotal moments in your life that allowed you to see more than what you previously thought possible? What experiences are still on your list? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995. July 23rd, 1996: Why I Don't Drink Alcohol
In this second episode, we visit July 23rd, 1996, and discover why I don't drink alcohol, what my drug of choice is, and how 16yr old me gave hints to exactly where I would be right now. This entry sparks questions on what creates our habits and challenges societal norms. Most of us don’t even realize how much we are being marketed to when it comes to alcohol and so much more. What things have we lost in adulthood that are core to who we are, and who we are meant to be? Who are we in times of change or challenge? Who are we in the face of peer pressure now? Author, poet, spoken word artist and emcee Opal Ellyse has been keeping handwritten journals since 1995.
