The Cost of Being Yourself in Business (And, It's Worth It)
"I want to make my message feel more like me...and I want to repel the right people and also attract the right people." I love this question and it's something I get to dive into with a client this week. AND, I wanted to bring it to the podcast to share something that you won't hear many talking about in the messaging and copywriting space: There is a cost to being yourself in business. But, yeah, it's worth it. It's not just time, money, or even mindset. When you make a bold declaration about what you want, and you really mean it and are ready to own it, anything that has been lingering around in your life that contradicts that version of you will make itself really loud. And, your tolerance for it will feel a LOT different from before. This is all an important part of the process of BECOMING someone who actually says and does the thing. It's not for everyone. What happens when creatives follow their intuition over the question "what do people want?" This episode is part two in a four part series on what it means to go beyond a smaller marketing message and get into your Legacy Message. And today is all about the path of a Legacy Creator. How do you know if you're one? Legacy creators see what's possible before it fully makes sense to others. They have endless ideas and feel most alive when they get to direct their energy and attention toward what they love learning and talking about. And, they have often felt very strange in most spaces. Like, they just don't quite fit in. So, as many creatives have, they found ways to become useful. They took what they saw as possible and tried to do it for people. Today's question "Can I say it like that?" When you're writing copy for anything in your business, it can bring up a lot of questions and hesitations around tone and how to phrase things. Other common questions: “Is this too pushy?" "Too over the top?" “How do I make my call to actions stronger without being salesy?” “How can I get people to keep reading without cheesy attention grabbers?" Open-hearted, compassionate, creative folks are used to feeling misunderstood. And that history with (mis)communication can play in role in how much of yourself you bring into your current business and creations. Did you learn at some point that the boldest, most confident and expressed version of yourself was too much? Were you corrected and told to tone it down?
