CALSTART Statement on CAFE Rollbacks The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration introduced a proposal to substantially reduce the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, a program established by Congress in 1975 to incentivize more efficient vehicles. If finalized, the newly proposed standards would lower the baseline efficiency requirements through the end of this decade to levels achieved years ago. In response to this breaking news, CALSTART Federal Policy Director Levi Kamolnick issued the following statement: “This proposed change to the CAFE program would pave the way for a future dominated by more fuel-intensive vehicles. CAFE standards have saved an estimated $5 trillion in fuel costs for American consumers and served to help spur innovation and technology. Further improvements are possible and needed since transportation is still the second highest expense for a typical American household, and higher fuel expenses increase costs for businesses.” Read the full statement . ⚡🚛 On December 3rd, Mass Fleet Advisor hosted an informative session with (MBN), an educational and community-based platform that provides resources, a business directory, and networking opportunities for organizations and professionals across Massachusetts. Rivian and Amazon / EATON / ABB and Greenlane
Audio: This week’s content: Nov 10th, 2025 Electric Amazon Deliveries in Canada and the UK Amazon and Rivian have introduced the first fleet of Rivian Electric Delivery Vans (EDVs) in Canada, for package deliveries. Amazon has a goal of 100,000 Rivian EDVs on the road by 2030, with over 35,000 already in operation boasting 1.5 billion packages delivered. Rivian worked closely with Amazon delivery drivers to develop the vehicle, implementing 360-degree cameras for driver safety and energy-saving microclimate seats for all-weather comfort. “Decarbonized transportation is a huge part of Amazon’s goal for net-zero carbon emissions across operations by 2040,” said Emily Barber, Director of Global Fleet and Products. “It’s partners like Rivian that make this goal feasible.” Across the pond, , expected to help carry 300 million products annually, traveling a combined distance of over 11 million milkes. The Mercedes-Benz Truck eActros 600 vehicles will be adopted by Amazon’s carrier partners, helping run packages between fulfillment centers, sorting centers, and final delivery stations. The eActros 600 can travel over 300 miles between charges even when carrying heavy cargo. Additionally, over 800 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter vans are set to be deployed in the UK over the next few months, ensuring deliveries remain fully-electricfully electric right up to the customer’s door. ABB and Greenlane Tackle Load Management Greenlane Infrastructure’s electric truck stop in Colton, CA currently offers 40+ high-speed chargers with a maximum power of 400kW. Once fully finished, the site will offer 60 chargers—, and it is the first of four planned sites along a 280-mile charging corridor between LA and Las Vegas. To sustainably tackle this energy load, to implement a supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA), as part of a broader energy management system (EMS) that safeguards grid stability and enables remote operation and monitoring. The SCADA system allows for remote operation to control and monitor a series of low-voltage (LV) circuit breakers and medium-voltage (MV) switches, an uncommon advantage among typical EV charging sites. When energy demand exceeds the limit, the SCADA system helps initiate a load shedding scheme to keep the site alive by shutting off certain chargers. If the power draw of the Colton site exceeds power limits set by the local utility, it could be disconnected from the grid, which makes careful management crucial to its reliability and continued success. Eaton Introduces Fast-Charging Solutions in UK and Europe , expanding options for customers integrating infrastructure into electrical systems. Through a partnership with ChargePoint, the new DC 30 and Duo chargers are aimed at reducing costs and helping manage site power requirements. The DC 30 is designed for roadside, fleet, and destination charging, while the Duo model can be mounted on walls, floors, and ceilings in compact spaces like driveways and garages. Both models can be installed indoors or outdoors and feature dynamic load balancing, with remote upgrades and issue resolution capabilities. The chargers form part of Eaton’s Buildings as a Grid strategy, which transforms buildings into energy hubs using on-site renewable generation. Focused on Mmanufacturing products for an array of industries, Eaton focuses on electrification and digitalization trends across its power management solutions. GM / ZM / Audi / BYD and more
Audio: --- This week’s content: August 11th, 2025 Member news: General Motors sold over 19,000 EVs in July, led by the Chevrolet Equinox EV, which became the top-selling non-Tesla electric vehicle in U.S. history, driven by affordability, range, and rising demand among younger buyers. So far in 2025, the U.S. has seen a record surge in EV charger deployment, on-track to deploy over 16k new public fast-charging ports —led by Tesla, ChargePoint, and EVgo. Despite political headwinds and slowing EV sales, the charging infrastructure is expanding rapidly, marking a 20% year-over-year growth and signaling strong industry resilience and commitment to electrification. Audi plans to unveil a mid-priced electric sports car at the Munich Motor Show, signaling a bold new design direction. CEO Gernot Döllner describes it as a “TT moment 2.0,” positioned between the TT and R8, aiming to become a new identity builder for the brand. BYD has reached a major milestone by selling over 13 million new energy vehicles (NEVs), solidifying its dominance in China’s EV market. In February alone, BYD sold more than 300,000 units, marking a 160% year-over-year increase, along with a 128.5% year-on-year growth in exports. GM engineers achieved 1,059 miles on a single charge in a Silverado EV—more than double its EPA-rated range of 493 miles. This hypermiling feat involved meticulous planning, optimized driving strategies, and vehicle modifications, including tire pressure adjustments, weight reduction, and alignment tweaks. The test, conducted as a team-building exercise, showcased the potential of EV efficiency when driven with precision. Tesla’s all-electric Semi truck completed successful pilot programs with ArcBest and thyssenkrupp Supply Chain Services, logging over 9,000 miles in real-world conditions. With ArcBest the truck averaged 321 miles per day with an energy efficiency of 1.55 kWh per mile. Ford Deliveries for DHL Fleet in Germany Under a new agreement with by the end of the year. Once achieved, DHL will operate nearly 5,000 electric Ford vans across its Post & Parcel Germany business unit and add to the 35,000+ electric vans it operates across its German delivery fleet. In 2022, Ford Pro and DHL signed a mutual letter of intent to accelerate the deployment of electric vans for global logistics, and DHL has a target to electrify 60% of its last-mile delivery vehicles around the world by 2030. As part of the agreement, Ford Pro is also providing the group with its E-Telematics software, alongside mobile technicians trained to work on electric vans directly at DHL Group sites for any required maintenance and repair. Policy Spotlight spoke to 's Federal Policy Director, , to break down the consequences of the presidential administration’s decision to eliminate fines for automakers that fail to meet CAFE standards: "The new law effectively eliminates CAFE, which will 'undercut decades of effort to build and design a regulation that benefits all Americans and promotes a more globally competitive U.S. auto market.'” The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) program has been in effect for nearly fifty years and shines brightly as an example of regulatory success. CALSTART has consistently spoken out in favor of CAFE standards because they have led to reduced emissions, consumer savings, and lower dependence on volatile foreign oil markets. Further, the continuation of this program would have only strengthened U.S. export potential, while providing market certainty. We thank , as always, for going behind the headlines with industry news and views. Read her full article . Audio: This week’s content: June 23rd, 2025 Zenobē and Brampton Lead CA$4 Billion Initiative Zenobē, a global fleet electrification and battery storage specialist headquartered in London, and the City of Brampton, Ontario, to support the zero emissions transition of the Brampton Transit bus fleet. This effort will mark the first phase of a 10-year electrification framework, serving Toronto's largest suburb and supporting the transition to a zero-emission public transit system. The partnership will replace the city’s existing diesel vehicles with 1,000 electric buses, with the first phase expected to go live in early 2027. Brampton will procure electric buses from Canadian suppliers, with planning and design, software, supply chain relationships and capital markets expertise provided by the Zenobē team. The initiative also includes comprehensive technical experience and expertise from the U.K. and dedicated electrical and civil engineering teams on the ground in Brampton. BAE Raises the Standard for Transit Industry at the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Bus Research and Testing Center (BRTC), demonstrating best-in-class fuel economy and emissions results. Equipped with BAE Systems propulsion and accessory power controls, the bus produced an average fuel economy of 6.6 miles per gallon during testing, setting a new benchmark for a hybrid-electric bus in North America. The Gen3 system was developed to enhance power delivery, improve acceleration, cut replacement and maintenance time, and significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions on hybrid buses. BAE Systems has nearly 30 years of experience developing and integrating electric drive systems for buses and heavy-duty vehicles. The company has more than 19,000 systems in service on transit buses worldwide, including hybrid-electric, battery-electric, and hydrogen fuel cell applications. Its electric propulsion technology is developed and serviced at the company’s facilities in Endicott, New York and Rochester, U.K. Motiv Welcomes New Chief Product and Engineering Officer Motiv Electric Trucks, a leading manufacturer of medium-duty electric trucks and buses, . Zion will oversee Motiv’s product roadmap and ensure technologies and finished vehicles are designed, validated, and tested to perform to the highest quality standards while meeting customer specifications. Zion joins Motiv with over 30 years of experience in vehicle engineering and electric vehicle technology from companies like Bollinger Motors, Xos Trucks, Hino Motors, and Ford. Motiv now accounts for 45 percent of electric step vans in California and 19 percent of step van deployments in the U.S. overall. Most importantly, Motiv leads the industry with repeat/follow-on orders; since founding, 64 percent of vehicles have been delivered to repeat customers. Scott Griffith, CEO of Motiv, said, “His background and leadership will be critical as we scale our team to continue to design and produce the most technologically-advanced, reliable, sustainable and cost-competitive electric trucks and buses for the largest fleets in North America." Electric Buses Add to the Beauty of Public Lands With proposed budget cuts threatening the preservation of America’s public lands, National Park Service staff are looking for ways to reduce their expenses without harming the lands they protect. Enter: . A few years ago, they helped South Lake Tahoe implement electric transit buses, logging nearly 67,000 miles and eliminating 13,000 gallons of diesel in their first year of operation. Operating an electric bus costs just 44 cents per mile and eliminates traditional maintenance expenses like oil changes and exhaust repairs, which surely catches the attention of budget-conscious park managers. Camber designed Tahoe’s charging depot with the region’s dispersed landscape in mind, installing overhead pantographs to charge at high speed while out running routes, limiting range anxiety. The electric buses also use regenerative braking to recharge as they descend from mountain passes. Over its twelve-year service life, a single electric bus returns more than $400,000 in avoided costs, and infrastructure support from companies like Camber show that electrification is possible even in the great outdoors. California's Authority Revoked / RIZON / Inspiration Mobility
Audio: This week’s content: June 2nd, 2025 Senate Revokes California’s Authority to Cut Emissions Pollution Last week, the Senate voted to overturn California’s authority to cut emissions pollution from cars and trucks – breaking a 50-year precedent. The decision reverses California’s waivers under the Biden Administration’s Clean Air Act for the Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT), Advanced Clean Cars II (ACC II), and Heavy-Duty Omnibus (HDO) regulations. CALSTART’s President and CEO, John Boesel, issued the following statement in response to the vote: “In a massive handout to special interests, the Senate today took a radical action that creates enormous policy uncertainty for the entire transportation industry. This move concedes the industries of the future to global competitors, will increase air pollution, accelerate global warming and result in significant job loss. This vote upends decades of policy that has successfully resulted in cleaner air and the growth of a robust clean transportation industry. It is a brazen, yet futile, attempt to bring the clean transportation industry to a sudden halt. CALSTART will continue to partner with the states working to fill this gaping void left by today’s federal action.” Check out the full press statement . Vancouver Island Adds RIZON Electric Truck to Municipal Fleet The City of Colwood has become the , the RIZON e16M. Terrawatt and Greenlane Open Charging Depots in SoCal With political headwinds fueling uncertainty across the industry, in Southern California. Last month Terrawatt Infrastructure opened a facility in Rancho Dominguez, 12 miles north of the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. With 7 megawatts and 20 fast-charging stalls, 125 trucks per day can charge right by the busiest seaport complex in the country. Greenlane Infrastructure also just opened a facility in Colton, about 60 miles east of LA, with over 10 megawatts of charging capacity. More details about the opening of Greenlane’s site are in the story below! These new electric truck stops represent the next phase of electrification in California, one that serves longer-haul applications. They’ll support more routes each day from SoCal’s crowded ports to distribution warehouses further inland, where drivers can get a “top-off” charge multiple times per day. Greenlane’s Flagship Charging Hub Grand Opening on April 24th! It was a monumental day, with over 200 attendees, including state and local government officials, industry leaders, and representatives from across the zero-emission transportation ecosystem. The event showcased 17 zero-emission trucks, buses, and vans, underscoring the momentum behind the commercial EV movement and Greenlane’s role in driving it forward. The facility was completed just 8 months after breaking ground, thanks to effective collaboration between public and private sector partners. Along with 41 OEM-agnostic chargers, the depot has a spacious lounge with food and beverage options, free Wi-Fi, and round-the-clock on-site attendants. There’s also the option to lease office space and parking, offering fleets a safe and convenient place to work and park overnight. Greenlane also secured their first commercial fleet customer: Nevoya, the first zero-emissions electric trucking carrier and technology-driven logistics platform in the U.S. Nevoya will begin operating a fleet of electric trucks out of the site, leveraging the charging infrastructure and on-site office space. The Colton facility is the first of several locations to make up the I-15 commercial EV charging corridor, with plans to open sites every 60-90 miles in Long Beach, Barstow, and Baker. Blue Bird Introduces Medium Duty Truck Blue Bird, a well-known school bus manufacturer and one of the largest electric school bus makers, . While they’re not the only manufacturer to recently launch a step van, they’ve been building their own chassis since 1952 and might be able to leverage this experience against other competitors. The vehicles have a 140kWh battery good for “up to 130 miles” and quick charge capabilities. Blue Bird plans to start shipping vans in the first quarter of 2026. Windrose Launches First All-Electric Long-Haul Sleeper Truck Windrose Technology, the Belgian developer of zero-emission long-haul trucks, in the United States. The initial rollout begins in Arizona, California, and Nevada, and is made possible by a partnership with EO Charging. The Windrose sleeper recently completed a 2,800-mile cross-country trip using only public charging stations, proving its range, reliability, and charging compatibility. JoyRide is already running the sleeper trucks in its operations and has nationwide expansion in their sight. Range Energy Announces Partnership for Refrigerated Trailers Range Energy is teaming up with Thermo King and ESL Power Systems to bring its transformative technology to refrigerated trailer units. Range’s product adds a battery and electric motor e-axle to a semi-truck trailer, allowing fleets to electrify without needing to buy new vehicles. While not a fully electric solution, the tech can reduce fuel usage substantially and add enhanced capabilities like trailer control and regenerative braking. While Range is still in the early stages of production, they’re now targeting opportunities to reduce emissions in refrigerated freight. Refrigerated units typically run on an additional small diesel engine, and Range’s trailer offers a big enough battery to eliminate this. The 288kWh battery is purportedly enough energy to keep the trailer box cold for a full day while unplugged from shore power, even in hot temperatures. They’ve already trailed the Thermo King partnership and will be trailing the ESL partnership soon. Range is expecting their first customer deliveries at either the end of this year or early next year.
