Enjoy this magical realism story and cult classic film that we can’t shut up about. They made some questionable changes from page to screen but honestly we like them both for very different reasons. 70 - Anne of Green Gables by L M Montgomery
This story offers so much scope for the imagination! We truly feel we are kindred spirits with Anne (spelled with an E, obviously). And the wrap up of the show left us in the depths of despair. We’ll just have to console ourselves with the absolute multitude of books in this series. Jordan shares her anger at why this ended and Emily reveals why she hates being compared to this main character sometimes. Episode Drink: Raspberry Cordial Ingredients: one four liter pail of freshly picked cleaned raspberries 4 cups boiling water 1/2 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 cups granulated sugar 1/2 cup of honey Instructions: In a large non-metallic bowl, crush the raspberries with a potato masher or similar utensil. Pour 4 cups of boiling water over the crushed berries; stir in the lemon juice. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and set aside in a cool, dark place for 24 hours. The next day, pour the crushed berries through a cheesecloth to sieve out the particles. This will take a while as you have to let the liquid slowly seep through the cloth. Place the liquid in a pot and bring to a boil on the stove. Add the honey and stir in.Add in the sugar to taste, but do not add more honey. Honey can override the raspberry taste in this recipe, but adding half a cup will give it a gorgeous depth of taste that plain sugar doesn't. Boil the liquid for another three minutes. Put in Jars. Tuck in a cool place. Will be good all winter Recipe From: Our Drinking Game for this Story Take a drink every time Anne is overly excited Take a drink every time you want to hug Matthew Take a drink every time Anne says “scope for the imagination” Take a drink every time Ms. Rachel Lynde gossips Take a drink every time Anne thinks about how much she hates Gilbert Blythe Take a drink every time Anne references a book Take a drink every time Anne screws up something Take a drink every time the show updates something to be more inclusive Spray some cheese spray in your mouth whenever you start to sob at the show Finish your drink to balance out the wholesomeness of the show. 52 - A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Come be a princess with us! Yes, you! All little girls are princesses (age is irrelevant here). We profess our love of magical realism and commend this movie for its beautiful visual storytelling. We also find a few holes in the movie plot that make it tough to fully believe this story - even though we totally believe in the magic. Come relive Jordan’s childhood with us! Episode Drink: A Mango Lassi Ingredients 1 cup chopped very ripe mango (see how to peel and chop mango), frozen chopped mango, or a cup of canned mango pulp 1 cup plain yogurt 1/2 cup milk 4 teaspoons honey or sugar, more or less to taste A dash of ground cardamom (optional) Ice (optional) Instructions Put mango, yogurt, milk, sugar and cardamom into a blender and blend for 2 minutes. If you want a more milkshake consistency and it's a hot day, either blend in some ice as well or serve over ice cubes. Pour contents into a glass and sprinkle with a tiny pinch of ground cardamom to serve. The lassi can be kept refrigerated for up to 24 hours. 51 - The Queen's Gambit by Walter Tevis
Come for the chess, stay for the styles. We talk about the flawless grace that is Anya Taylor-Joy and marvel at how we were obsessed with a story about chess. Chess. It was unexpected, to say the least. We also pick apart the Drama that is Beth’s life, ogle her gorgeous dresses, speculate if there is going to be a next season, and commend author Walter Tevis for having the common sense that many authors seem to lack with their leading ladies. But, did we mention Beth’s clothes? Episode Drink: The Gibson 2 ½ oz. London dry gin ½ oz. dry vermouth 1 cocktail onion Instructions Pack a mixing glass with ice. Add gin and vermouth. Stir for until it is very cold. Strain into a cocktail glass in which a cocktail onion awaits. Our Drinking Game for this Story Take a drink: Everytime Beth takes a drink Everytime a chess opening is referenced, a la Bishop’s Opening, Petrov’s Defense, Two Knights Defense, etc. Whenever you see an outfit that Beth is wearing that you dig Everytime a man is a sexist dick to Beth Take 2 drinks when Beth loses a game. 49 - The Witches by Roald Dahl
Grab your Gran and let’s go take out a coven! We return to the welcome arms of Roald Dahl but have some issues with the on-screen version. The creepy, dark streaks of Jim Hensen and Mr. Dahl produced a cult classic of a children’s horror movie. Plus, we come up with as many children’s horror movies and tv shows as we could come up with because it’s definitely a genre that needs to be acknowledged. Jordan reveals her true feelings about campy movies and Emily divulges her weird love of them. Episode Drink: The Witch’s Cocktail 1/2 oz vodka 1 1/2 oz raspberry schnapps 1/2 oz melon liqueur 1 oz club soda 2 oz lemon juice a splash lime juice a splash grenadine syrup Plenty of ice Instructions Fill a collins glass with ice, and pour in the vodka, raspberry schnapps, melon liqueur and splash of lime juice. Pour in the lemon juice until the glass is 2/3 full and top off the glass with the club soda. Stir gently to mix, then add a splash of grenadine to serve. Recipe From: Our Drinking Game for this Story Take a drink every time: The kid says “Grandma” A witches’ eyes flash purple (or lightning can be seen in their eyes) The witches grovel and say “O brainy one!” or “O genius one!” A person is transformed into a mouse (sorry for this at the end of the movie) And finish your drink when you’re just done with the bad physical effects. They really just take you out of the moment of the movie. Fantastic Reads: Jordan: by Margaret Atwood Em: by Louisa May Alcott A Novel Adaptation was created by Emily Eppley and Jordan Redwine. Why do we find some villains so entreating? Dr. Lector makes our skin crawl in every scene but he somehow still holds our attention. In this episode, Jordan has the uncommon occurrence of actually getting the feels for these characters and Emily recounts how she wanted to BE Leslie when she was younger. We discuss how Josh Hutcherson might be a time traveler and which adaptation the author and her son pretend doesn’t exist. Episode Drink: The Drink of Queens 1 1/2 oz dry gin 1/2 oz dry vermouth 3/4 oz sweet vermouth 1 oz pineapple juice (freshly pressed, if possible) 1 wedge of pineapple, for garnish Instructions Shake all ingredients with ice and finely strain into a chilled coup glass. It is so easy to hate some of the characters in this book, and we loved doing it. The story is lovely and a big thanks to our Patreon for choosing it for their Author Level Patreon benefit because this is also one of our favorite books of the season. This movie though, is something else. If you’ve ever wanted to see puffy sleeves and 80’s synth inserted into farm chore scenes, then this movie definitely has you covered. If any movie adaptation has deserved a reboot - it might be this one. #RebootsThatNeedToHappen Episode Drink: Mexican Hot Chocolate 3 cups milk of choice 3 tbsp cocoa powder 3 tbsp tbsp granulated sugar Pinch salt 1/4 tsp cinnamon Pinch cayenne pepper 2 oz tequila Instructions To make hot chocolate, add all ingredients except for tequila to a small saucepan. Whisk to combine. Heat on low until mixture comes to a gentle boil, stirring. Remove from heat. Add tequila and whisk again. Divide into 3 mugs. Top each mug with 1-2 cinnamon marshmallows (instructions on site) or whipped cream. You’re going to need a box of tissues for this book. We’re warning you now. We talk about the stark realities of the thirties, the advancement of female characters since then, and whether or not George is compassionate. We also share our true feelings about Steinbeck as an author and even introduce a new segment thanks to him. Episode Drink: White Rabbit Cocktail 80ml gin 50ml amaretto 50ml double cream 1 tsp lemon curd ¼ tsp vanilla paste handful of ice edible flowers, to serve Put the gin, amaretto, double cream, lemon curd and vanilla paste into a cocktail shaker with a handful of ice and shake until the outside of the shaker feels very cold. We are here for racial justice and loved reading about Starr as she decides to fight the injustice in her life. There are some very significant differences between the book and movie that change whole the meaning of T.H.U.G.L.I.F.E. as it affects the Carter family. We missed the references to Fresh Prince that were constant in the book and think that Chris got the “girlfriend treatment.” Episode Drink: Milk Fortify your body so you can go out and protest for longer.
