Discuss Music: The “salad” days of record labels were during the 20th century. Once music could be recorded and sold, labels became increasingly popular. In order to capture the feel of the swampy, dank surroundings of the Mississippi River delta, I used a 12-string. Show #21 Beethoven's Ninth and the "Third Advance"
Discuss Music: One of the great “later” advances in music I believe was Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. It was first heard way back a century ago in 1824, and is easy to think of as being ancient history. However within the context of music’s overall historical timeline, it’s much nearer to the modern day, than the early music I discussed last week. Play a Song: My song this morning is about nostalgia. Have you ever returned to one of your childhood neighborhoods, and become nostalgic? The Old 29 is a song about a train that used to come through a town, but has been passed by time. And a song you really, really like is a bit like a best friend. But in order to accomplish this, a song needs to be "hooky". Not so easy to do! Of course, the answer is no, otherwise everyone would be using that formula. So how does a song become born? Today, I’ll look at how one iconic song was created. Show #2 About The Host, Paul Ryan
The music and songwriting I do today, represents my second foray into music. As a teenager and part of a Toronto-based music group the "Voyageurs", I was fortunate to play at some iconic venues including Massey Hall, the Grand Ole Opry (Ryman), and others. In 1967, I put the guitar away to continue my education. This eventually led to a career in market research and advertising, and building my business. The music was never far away however, and by the early 2000's, I began songwriting, visiting Nashville for IBMA conferences, and building a music studio to record in The music industry of today is dramatically different from the one I left 'back in the day'. That changeover is fascinating, and the subject of some of my shows later on the Sound Threads series.
