The Kingdom Of Eternal Forgiveness
04/27/2025
The Kingdom Of Eternal Forgiveness
TRY AGAIN ... mediatate on ... seek ye first the KINGDOM of heaven ... imagine contemplating an eternity of the source of all love and perpetual forgiveness ... a love supreme exemplified by God sending his ONLY Son and Jesus's death, descent in Hell and then victorious return from all evil, to give US the example of Resurrection and continuous creation ... try again to imagine the most ideal, most perfect state of LOVE. TRY AGAIN! The Creator entering creation ... the Creator of Time actually entering the time-constrained facet of physical reality to spend time with us and then descend and walk through Hell in order to emerge victorious and give us back our souls ... the Creator entering creation; the Creator of Time squeezing back inside the time He created ... to give us eternity to contemplate love, mercy and forgiveness. There is no greater love. Listen, there's this love, man— Not the Hollywood kind, not the greeting card type, But a love so vast it bent the universe, A Father sending His only begotten into the void. *[bass begins, low and resonant]* The squares call it sacrifice, But dig—it's more like cosmos-shattering surrender, The Creator entering creation, Infinity pouring itself into finite flesh. *[piano enters with suspended chords]* The Son walked our broken streets, Touched our leprous souls, Then descended—can you dig it?— All the way down into the pit. *[saxophone enters with mournful, searching phrases]* Down past the last subway stop, Beyond the final basement, Into Hell's deepest chamber, Where forgiveness has never been spoken. *[drums with mallets, like distant thunder]* And there, in that midnight zone, Where even angels fear to whisper, He planted the flag of forgiveness, An eternal pardon that echoes backward and forward. *[all instruments build tension]* Then the resurrection, daddy-o! Not just a man beating death, But creation itself being recreated, The cosmos getting a second chance. *[trumpet enters with bright, ascending lines]* This Kingdom is that love in motion, That forgiveness becoming atmosphere, That resurrection becoming reality, That eternity touching time. *[saxophone and trumpet trade phrases]* Perfect love that doesn't just forgive once, But exists in perpetual forgiveness, A love that isn't just kind sometimes, But IS kindness without beginning or end. *[piano plays block chords with increasing intensity]* The Kingdom is where rebels find home, Where the broken find wholeness, Where death becomes doorway, Where endings transform to beginnings. *[full ensemble swells]* It's the most solid reality, man, More real than concrete beneath your feet, More enduring than mountains, More permanent than your pain. *[instruments reach peak intensity]* Can you taste it? This wild perfection? This love beyond comprehension? This mercy that outlasts memory? This grace that outshines galaxies? *[sudden drop to just bass and soft piano]* The Kingdom isn't coming someday, It's breaking through right now, In the space between your heartbeats, In the pause between your thoughts. *[instruments fade except for piano]* Seek first this love supreme, This forgiveness that creates worlds, This Kingdom where everything broken Is forever made new. *[final piano chord, sustained and luminous]*

The Invisible Kingdom

The Invisible Kingdom
Different thoughts that arise out of the contemplation of what the "Kingdom of God" is/might be that Jesus mentions in . The Lord's Kingdom is clearly a spiritual REALITY, but is also clearly something that is well beyond the bounds of physical Reality or at least physical, material reality that we humans can understand. In your lyric attempt to provoke listeners to stretch, to contemplate, to go beyond the material world to seek something so perfect, so filled with LOVE, so full of mercy, so defined by forgiveness, redemption and peace that we cannot prove it with anything from human experience. Man, I'm telling you about a kingdom Not built with brick, not bought with bread Not seen with eyes, not found in maps But real like midnight jazz is real *[bass begins walking pattern]* Seek first, the Nazarene said This thing beyond the fingertips of emperors This realm that flowers in the cracks Between what is and what could be *[piano enters with sparse, modal chords]* Squares look for kingdoms in tanks and banks In Pentagon plans and Madison Avenue promises But this kingdom, this crazy kingdom It slips through the fingers of the mighty *[tenor saxophone plays long, searching notes]* The suit-and-tie boys won't find it The cats with gold cufflinks can't buy it It's not waiting after your funeral, man It's breathing right now between your thoughts *[drums enter with brushes, gentle]* A kingdom where mercy outlasts memory Where enemies break bread at midnight Where the last cat in line goes first And the fallen walk without shame *[saxophone builds intensity]* I've seen it flash like summer lightning When a junkie shares his last dime When the condemned man forgives his hangman When love speaks louder than fear *[piano becomes more insistent]* It's a parallel universe, daddy-o Running alongside our concrete nightmare More solid than steel but invisible More powerful than bombs but silent as prayer *[all instruments build]* This kingdom is now, this kingdom is here But seen only by those who've stopped looking For what the world calls real And started seeing with different eyes *[climax of instruments]* So dig it—seek this kingdom first Not with telescopes but with tears Not with formulas but with faith Not with power but with open palms *[instruments fade to solo piano]* The kingdom is The moment between notes The breath between words The space between heartbeats Where everything that matters Lives *[final piano chord fades to silence]*

Social Isolation: Stress, Cognition, and Connection

Social Isolation: Stress, Cognition, and Connection
This podcast is based on a document that I am in the process of compiling If you want to know something about FUTURE topics, then you can look at my post on other practical applied cognitive nueroscience topics that I will dive more deeply into in the future ... practical applied cognitive nueroscience is really not about adding things, it's all going to be about REMOVING the bad habits of being myself ... it's all going to be about CAVING IN the MELONS of my personal demons. Background on Social Isolation: Stress, Cognition, and Connection Social interaction is a fundamental human need, deeply ingrained in our biology and essential for overall well-being. Social isolation is not a monolithic entity but rather a spectrum of experiences characterized by varying degrees of social disconnection. Perceived social isolation, commonly known as loneliness, represents the subjective feeling of being alone, disconnected, or lacking close, meaningful relationships, but loneliness is an internal PERCIEVED emotional state reflecting a perceived discrepancy between an individual's desired level of social connection and their actual social experiences. The advent of the internet and online environments has introduced a new dimension to social interaction, offering both opportunities and challenges for social connection. When an individual perceives a stressful situation ... for me there's not much worse than the feeling of LONELINESS I experience whenever I am stranded in a crowd of people and unable to escape to solitude and being alone [a state in which I NEVER feel lonely], ie I'd rather be up on stage naked than surrounded by "loved ones" or friends ... OTHER people actually like being around people -- we're all wired differently ... the body initiates a complex series of physiological and psychological responses designed to cope with the subconcious danger or perceived threat. The sympathetic-adreno-medullary (SAM) axis is one of the primary systems involved in this stress response ... an immediate and rapid response, often referred to as the "fight-or-flight" response, prepares the body to either confront the perceived threat or escape from it. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis represents another crucial component of the body's stress response system, providing a more sustained and long-term regulatory mechanism. Beyond the physiological responses, stress also manifests psychologically, encompassing a range of emotional and cognitive changes. Social isolation has been consistently linked to a state of heightened stress reactivity in individuals across the lifespan. Loneliness and perceived isolation can lead to a heightened sensitivity to social threats and negative social cues.Research has consistently linked social isolation and loneliness to alterations in cortisol levels, a key indicator of HPA axis activity. Social isolation and loneliness also appear to influence how the cardiovascular system responds to stress. Cognitive function, the brain's ability to process information, learn, remember, and reason, is a multifaceted construct. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) outlines six key domains of cognitive function: complex attention, executive function, learning and memory, language, perceptual-motor control, and social cognition. Each of these domains encompasses a range of specific mental processes essential for navigating daily life. As individuals age, some changes in cognitive abilities are considered a normal part of the aging process. Social isolation has been shown to have both short-term and long-term effects on cognitive function. In the short term, social isolation and lack of stimulation can lead to problems with memory, attention span, concentration, processing information, reasoning, and judgment. Numerous longitudinal studies and meta-analyses have established a significant association between social isolation and loneliness with an increased risk of long-term cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and dementia. Several biological mechanisms are believed to mediate the link between social isolation, chronic stress, and cognitive decline. Oxidative stress, an imbalance between the production of harmful free radicals and the body's ability to neutralize them with antioxidants, is another biological pathway implicated in the link between social isolation, chronic stress, and cognitive decline. Research has also revealed that social isolation and chronic stress are associated with structural and functional changes in key brain regions crucial for cognition and stress regulation. Furthermore, neuroinflammation, involving the activation of microglia, the brain's resident immune cells, plays a role in mediating the effects of social isolation and chronic stress on cognitive decline. Fortunately, several factors can buffer the negative effects of social isolation on stress and cognitive decline. Social support and a strong sense of connectedness have been consistently shown to mitigate these detrimental impacts. Engagement in meaningful activities and activities that provide cognitive stimulation can also play a protective role against the negative consequences of social isolation. Participating in social clubs, volunteering, pursuing hobbies, engaging in lifelong learning, and maintaining an active lifestyle can help preserve cognitive function and reduce feelings of loneliness in isolated individuals. Various interventions have been developed and tested to reduce loneliness and improve social connections, with the aim of promoting cognitive health and overall well-being. Online social interactions present a complex picture for individuals experiencing social isolation, offering both potential benefits and drawbacks. However, excessive or unhealthy engagement with online social media can also have negative consequences, potentially increasing stress, anxiety, depression, loneliness, and fostering social comparison and fear of missing out (FOMO). Participation in open-source development offers a unique form of online social interaction. It can foster a sense of community and collaboration among individuals contributing to shared projects. But, this type of participation can also be associated with potential stressors, such as high workload expectations, managing feedback from a diverse community (including negative or demanding feedback), dealing with complex technical challenges, and the risk of burnout due to the often voluntary and demanding nature of the work. On the other hand, contributing to open-source projects can also provide cognitive stimulation, opportunities for skill development, and a sense of accomplishment. Conclusion The available evidence overwhelmingly indicates that social isolation, in both its objective and perceived forms, has a significant and detrimental impact on both the stress response system and cognitive function. Social isolation acts as a chronic stressor, leading to heightened stress reactivity, alterations in cortisol regulation, and changes in cardiovascular responses to stress. These physiological changes, coupled with the psychological distress of loneliness, contribute to an increased risk of accelerated cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia. Biological mechanisms such as chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, structural and functional changes in key brain regions, and neuroinflammation appear to mediate these negative effects. While online social interactions offer potential benefits for connecting isolated individuals, they also carry risks of increased stress and may not fully replace the need for meaningful in-person relationships. Protective factors such as strong social support, engagement in meaningful activities, and targeted interventions aimed at reducing loneliness and improving social connections are crucial for mitigating the negative consequences of social isolation on both mental and cognitive health. Future research should focus on further elucidating the complex causal pathways involved, exploring the nuances of different types of social interaction, and developing effective and accessible interventions to address this growing public health challenge.

Creator’s Love's Calling You
Cool cats and kittens, dig this scene, Idols all around, but what do they mean? Chrome-plated dreams, tailfins so high, Chasing the dollar, reaching for the sky. But in the quiet, when the neon’s dim, Do we hear the whisper, “Is it all for Him?” We stumble, we fall, in this idol game, But grace whispers soft, “You’re not to blame.” For in the mirror, if we dare to see, The idol’s reflection might just be me. John Five-Twenty-One, a warning so clear, “Little children, keep idols not near.” Exodus Twenty, verse three, don’t you see? “No other gods before Me,” that’s the decree. Romans One-Twenty-Five, a truth so stark, Worshiping creations, missing the mark. With hearts wide open, and eyes that see, We speak the truth, but oh so gently. For in their shoes, we’ve walked a mile, Knowing the struggle, the idol’s guile. So let the sax wail, let the bass thump low, In this jazz of life, let the Spirit flow. Keep your idols in check, let your worship be true, For the Creator’s love is calling to you.

Why Transcending Ego Matters

Why Transcending Ego Matters
Across cultural contexts, and down through history, throughout the millennia of the most revered classical and sacred texts, the wisest of the wise in all cultures have recognized the essential need for humans to first transcend ego before being able to actually begin to attain anything, ie before we can go anywhere, we must first get out of our own way. Thus, we have seen a universal human search for ego transcendence that continues to this moment on the scientific perspectives on neuroplasticity and cognitive awareness of ego-dissolution states. Implications of the J-0-Y principle of ego transcendance. J-O-Y, J for Jesus first - then, O for Others - then, Y for You. What Stands In the Way Becomes The Way
Inspired by ... we must no longer be conformed to the world ... which is also what drives our concept of Transformative Discipleship Technology. Our intention is to blend Christian spirituality with cognitive neuroscience to break the bad habits of being ourselves. You can’t renew your mind by being a spectator, watch, wishing, desiring to be of the world. In order to become a transformative disciple of Christ, you must first transform yourself. You are the prison that is keep you from what your Creator intended you to become … break out of your self-imposed walls. *[finger snaps, bass line emerges...]* Dig this, man! The impediment to action... advances action... What stands in the way... becomes... the way... What stands in the way... becomes... the way... Man, this world's pattern— a groove worn deep like needle on wax, conformity's rut, daddy-o, the squares' straight-line map. But dig— the Mind, a cosmos untapped, renewal waits in the shadows of consciousness, transformation's the hepcat's true path. *[horn riff]* The impediment ain't no roadblock, cats— it's the raw material, what stands in your way becomes the way. Dig it? Your brain's neuroplasticity— God's gift of perpetual revolution, science backs what the Spirit's been saying since the Apostle laid it down. *[piano pounding intensifies]* The Melon Cave of your inner soul— where habit-chains break, where discipline births discipline, where cognitive science meets ancient Word. We're not talking square religion, man— we're riffing on transformation technology, the science of becoming, the art of unbecoming. *[horn progression]* Achievement ain't about addition, you see— it's subtraction of obstacles, removal of the self-made walls, the discipline of improving discipline. So cool it with conformity's pull— be ye transformed! Let the Mind be renewed! The pattern of this world is a drag, man, a real gone nowhere scene. *[collective improvisation builds]* In the cave of contemplation, where neuroscience meets the Word, we find the technology of discipleship— not mere knowledge, but practice. The impediment to action... advances action... What stands in the way... becomes... the way... *[voice fades as instruments continue, then fade out]* The impediment ain't no roadblock, cats— it's the raw material, what stands in your way becomes the way. Glory to Glory

Glory to Glory
Inspired by : "Be transformed into the same image from glory to glory." *Snap fingers slowly, bass walks four-four, saxophone stretches long notes behind the words* Dig this, cats— We're captive mirrors in this cosmic pad, Reflecting fragments of the divine light. Not the whole scene, man, just Glimpses through smoke and synapse fire. Glory to glory, riff by riff, The Holy Hepcat reworks our circuits, Rewires the neural jazz we've been playing since birth. Those old demon cats? We ain't jamming with that scene no more. Those pathways—burned out, Dead-end streets where fear peddles its broken wares. The Spirit moves like Coltrane's sheets of sound, Restructuring the ancient brain, Plasticizing what seemed solid stone. See, the squares think transformation's Some kind of intellectual game— Reading the right books, man, quoting the right cats. But it's in the practice, the discipline of discipline, The daily dying to what keeps us Trapped in our own smudged reflection. I said GLORY— TO— GLORY! Not glory to same-old-same-old, Not glory to what-I've-always-been, But glory amplified, transposed, transcendent. The cosmic Father don't dig materialism, man. He's building cathedrals in consciousness, Sanctuaries of synaptic change, Where old habits fall away like autumn leaves. Jung was hip to simple chemistry, But we're talking divine alchemy here— Not just reaction, but resurrection. From unveiled faces to unveiled faces, From broken mirrors to crystal clarity, From neurons firing old tired patterns To dendrites reaching toward eternity. Glory to glory, cats. Glory to glory. *Saxophone rises, holds one pure note, Silence follows*

Jesus Is First, J-O-Y, not Y!
03/26/2025
Jesus Is First, J-O-Y, not Y!
Inspired by Luke 14:27 ... entitled "Jesus is First" ... which is about the discipline of Christian discipleship of denying one's self, submitting that self to Jesus and the Creator's will *[sparse modal piano intro, contemplative bass notes]* Man, I'm standing outside these prison walls Concrete and razor wire -- but real cage is me— That old self crying out: "Me first! Me first!" But the Man from Galilee laid it down straight: *[finger snaps, cymbal brush]* "If you ain't ready to deny yourself, To shoulder your cross daily and follow my path, Then split ... cat—you are not my disciple." Harsh words from a gentle soul, dig? *[saxophone enters, mournful then resolute]* J-O-Y, daddy-o! That's the formula, The cosmic order the squares can't comprehend. J is for Jesus—first, foremost, foundation. Not your church, not your crew, not your scene. *[bass walk, insistent rhythm]* When the collection plate becomes the mission, When the building trumps the Builder, You're playing a C-O-Y game, man— Coercive, cold, collection-obsessed. *[piano chord progression shifts to minor]* O is for Others—the second command. Love 'em like yourself, but never above the King. Constitution, community, all that jazz— Good things in their rightful place. *[drum brushes intensify]* Y is for You—last in line, dig? The paradox that kills the cats: Putting yourself last brings the most joy, While chasing your own kicks leaves you asking "Why?" WHY? WHY? WHY? *[ensemble pauses, leaving only bass pulse]* These prison walls speak truth, man— When everything's stripped away, When the hip facade crumbles, What remains? Who's first? *[saxophone returns with plaintive melody]* The cross ain't pretty, it ain't cool, It's the weight of dying daily to yourself. The disciples couldn't dig it at first either— Wanted thrones instead of thorns. *[piano returns with gospel inflections]* But that's the beat: deny, take up, follow. Three steps in the cosmic dance, Three notes in the divine progression, The rhythm of true discipleship. *[full ensemble builds to climax]* So lay it down, cool cat— Your pride, your plans, your precious self. Pick up that cross, heavy as it is, And follow the One who carried His first. *[music fades to whispered conclusion with finger snaps]* "Jesus is first... Jesus is first... J-O-Y, not Y... J-O-Y, not Y..."

The Discipline of Becoming
03/19/2025
The Discipline of Becoming
Inspired by and harnessing neuroplasticity through disciplined practice to rewire our brain and transform our character. *[sparse jazz piano notes, modal progression]* Dig it, man— The old self like a threadbare coat, Worn out with bad habits and old roads. These pathways in my brain—concrete-hard From the repetition of yesterday's mistakes. *[finger snaps, bass note]* The square world says, "That's just how you are," But the Book says, "Put off... put on..." And the mad scientists with their neuroplasticity Are finally catching up to ancient wisdom. The mind rewires itself, daddy-o, Not in one ecstatic moment of revelation But in the cool discipline of daily practice, In the monotonous miracle of habit. *[saxophone riff, low and questioning]* Aristotle knew it when he rapped, "Excellence ain't no single act, cats— It's the habit, the constant becoming, The daily dying to who you were." *[brushes on snare drum, light and persistent]* The old neural pathways—rigid and deep— Demand their familiar fix, But I'm laying down new tracks now, Moment by moment, choice by choice. *[piano chords, dissonant then resolving]* To be made new in the image of the Creator— Not just a heavenly wish, but a biological fact. The brain changes, man, it really changes When we put our minds on higher things. *[bass solo, walking steadily forward]* The obstacle is the way, dig? Achievement ain't adding more, It's stripping away the old self, Breaking the chains of ingrained patterns. *[quiet, contemplative moment]* The Melon Cave knows— This intersection of ancient text and modern science, Where spiritual transformation meets neural networks, Where discipline becomes freedom becomes love. *[full ensemble, modal resolution]* So I practice the discipline of improving discipline, A jazz improvisation on fixed chord changes, A paradox of structure and freedom— Becoming who I was always meant to be. *[fade to finger snaps and whispered refrain]* "Put off the old... put on the new... Put off the old... put on the new..."

Spirit Jazz, Righteousness Not Rules
03/17/2025
Spirit Jazz, Righteousness Not Rules
Inspired by , in which the Apostle Paul rebukes the Galatians for turning from grace to law and rules, asking if they are so foolish to begin by the Spirit but then seek perfection by human effort akin to the Pharisees, who were responsible for using the coercive power of "the law" and getting the Romans to kill Jesus Christ ... AND ... , in which Paul declares that "the kingdom of God is NOT a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy IN THE Holy Spirit." These verses reveal that holiness manifests as transformed character rather than adherence to external regulations, challenging moralistic reductions of the Christian life and contrast how true holiness flows FROM the Spirit DWELLING WITHIN US rather than relying on rule-keeping legalism. [finger snaps in background, modal jazz playing softly] Man, dig this scene— The cats in Galatia got hung up on the rules, While the Spirit blew wild and free. Paul said, "You crazy, man? You started with the Spirit Now you're chasing perfection Through the sweat of your own brow?" Like, the squares who killed the Messiah Were so busy counting commands They couldn't hear the cosmos breathing. The Kingdom ain't about What touches your lips, man, It's that divine righteousness Flowing like Coltrane's horn— Peace deeper than the bottom of the sea, Joy exploding like Mingus on the upbeat. The Holy Spirit dwelling within, Not the checklist hanging on your wall. See, the modern-day Karens are standing at the corner, Clutching their rulebooks, Measuring hemlines and wine glasses, While real holiness is dancing downtown, Transformed from the inside out. It's grace, baby, not the gavels of judgment. It's the Spirit moving, Not your fingers wagging. You dig? [saxophone solo fades in]

Everything in Love

Everything in Love
Inpsired by , the depth of covenant relationships as opposed to the shallowness of negotiated arrangements between persons, business contracts, legal property titles, and constitutional relationships in establishing governments. This requires deeper thinking about the admonition to "Do EVERYTHING in love." Covenant relationships find their ultimate significance not in specific achievements but in consistently operating from the motivation of LOVE which reflects divine character and integrity to a watching world. [finger snaps, bass walks quietly beneath words] Dig this, cats— Paul laid it down in ancient ink, Four words to frame existence: "Do everything in love." Not some things, Not when convenient, Not when deserved, EVERYTHING. [saxophone enters with soft, contemplative phrase] These squares sign contracts, All fine print and escape clauses, But the covenant man walks differently— Beyond signature, beyond obligation. The contract asks, "What must I do?" The covenant whispers, "Who must I become?" [piano adds sparse, modal chords] Achievements? Trophies in dusty rooms, man. The divine rhythm moves underneath, In the spaces between accomplishment. See, the covenant drummer doesn't count measures, He becomes the timekeeper of divine character. [drums enter with light brush work] This cat Paul knew the scene— When your motivation swings from love, The watching world catches a glimpse Of something beyond itself. [trumpet enters with muted, questioning phrase] In the end, Your résumé means nothing, Your prizes mean nothing, Your perfect attendance means nothing. Only this: Did you do EVERYTHING in love? The ultimate riff, The coolest progression, The deepest modal exploration— "Do everything in love." [all instruments build to contemplative conclusion, then fade to finger snaps and silence]

Downside Up Kingdom
03/14/2025
Downside Up Kingdom
Inspired by and Jesus' teachings on servant leadership, especially how Jesus explicitly contrasts worldly leadership ("lording it over") with kingdom leadership ("whoever wants to be great must be a servant"), demanding a radical rethinking of organizational structure. Jesus inverts typical hierarchical assumptions, placing service above status and sacrifice above power. This lyric has to go into thinking that challenges deeply entrenched organizational habits and invites reimagining authority structures that empower rather than dominate, creating systems where leadership is measured by impact on others rather than personal advancement. [snaps fingers slowly, bass walks quietly behind] Man, dig this scene— Power pyramids stacked to heaven But the Kingdom cats play it different, you dig? The suits and the squares, They climb ladders, man, they crush With shiny shoes on bowed necks below "Lord it over," that's their groove Status like currency, spent on self But the Nazarene flipped the script Broke the hierarchy like old vinyl When he wrapped that towel 'round his waist And bent to wash dusty feet [saxophone riff, low and contemplative] Who's leading? Who's following? The questions scatter like smoke rings When the first becomes last And the boss becomes basement Corporate America's playing chess, baby But Jesus is dealing a different deck Where kings serve pawns And winning means giving it all away [finger snaps intensify] I watched a deacon with a title Man, he wouldn't pour the coffee But the cat who owns the building He's sweeping floors after hours See, the organization chart's Just paper, daddy-o In the upside-down kingdom Greatness flows downhill like spring rain [drum brush softly builds] So what's your trip, cool cat? You climbing or descending? You building towers Or digging foundations? The Son of Man came to serve Not to be served, dig? A cosmic inversion Like gravity suddenly pulling skyward [final saxophone flourish] So tear up those ladders And burn those corner offices The org chart of the kingdom Is just a circle of servants With Jesus at the center Washing everybody's feet [bass note fades]

Temple Not My Own

Temple Not My Own
Inspired by different thoughts that arise contemplating the following question: How does my understanding of my body as a "temple of the Holy Spirit" which is not owned, but was bought at a price that I can never begin to repay. Obviously, is one of many verses that come to mind. The temple is not owned, but something I get to use and was bought at a price. This vessel of bone and blood, Not mine to squander, man ... Dig it! My flesh—temporary residence Of something cosmic... Something eternal. The temple stands— Not built by human hands, Not owned through human deeds. A sacred loan from the divine landlord Who paid the mortgage in full. How square to think I'm free When I've been bought... Yet how utterly free indeed When I realize what bought me. This body— Clay spun on the potter's wheel, Temporary dig for the eternal beatnik spirit, On loan from the Great Hipster Above. Crazy, man! To be both vessel and tenant, Both temple and worshipper, Both owned and eternally free. So what's the scene? If this body's not my pad, But a temple purchased at the highest price, Then who am I to trash what isn't mine? Who am I to desecrate what's holy? The paradox hangs in smoke-filled air: The more I surrender ownership, The more I find true freedom, baby. The divine transaction—my liberation.

The Temporal Mirage

The Temporal Mirage
Inspired by which talks about Jesus' parable of the rich fool who makes excellent long-term financial plans but is called a fool because he is not rich toward God, particularly since this parable powerfully distinguishes between prudent temporal planning and genuine eternal wisdom, showing how seemingly wise strategies can ultimately prove foolish if they neglect spiritual reality. [bass walks slowly in minor key] Dig this scene, cats— A square with green spilling from his pockets, Building barns of tomorrow While his soul runs empty like last night's bottle. [piano plays sparse, contemplative chord] Crazy, man, crazy— The greatest architectural feat: Silos reaching skyward, But the foundation's sand, you dig? [saxophone riff, questioning, searching] "Soul, baby, relax! Years of cool ahead— Eat, drink, make with the scene." But the cosmos plays a different riff. [drum brush intensifies] That night, that wild night, When the squares of time collapse— The Man Upstairs lays it down: "Tonight your soul splits, Daddy-O. Your barn-building days are through. Who inherits your cool now?" [horn section punctuates with dissonant chord] Solid, man— The cat who stacks bread for himself, But remains a spiritual square, Is nowhere in the eternal jam session. [bass walks with increasing urgency] So what's the word, bird? Invest in the eternal, Be rich toward the Divine Beatnik, Who digs not your material scene, But the dimensions of your soul. [all instruments fade to whispered cymbal] There's a richer kind of rich, you dig? Not measured in barns or bread, But in the currency of eternity. The ultimate cool is being nowhere in time And everywhere in God's mind. [finger snaps fade to silence]

BODY & SOUL

BODY & SOUL
Man, dig this — The ancients knew what we forgot In these neon days and concrete thoughts. Hebrew mind saw Not parts to dissect with cold calculation. The Scripture speaks of nephesh — living breath Not ghost machines awaiting death But beings breathing divine intention Dust animated with holy invention. Science chops us into chemicals and bone Neurons firing in the cranial zone As if the mind were just a brain And consciousness, a temporal chain. These modern cats with their material rule Split the being from the soul Measure man with math and scale Miss the essence, chase the tail. But the Word says we're more than matter in motion More than cells and electrical notion We're image-bearers of the Infinite One Not accidents under an indifferent sun. Can you quantify your mother's love? Can you calculate the weight of grief? Can you measure why that tune moves you so? Can you diagram the moment of belief? The Biblical man is whole like bread Not divided into spirit and head An integrated reflection divine Not machine of space and time. Materialists say we're just cosmic dust Temporary patterns that will someday rust But ancient wisdom knew all along We're notes in an eternal song.

Introducing Melon Cave

Introducing Melon Cave
This post is an introduction to the Melon Cave podcast of Mark Bruns which goes to the heart of why I work on something called which is about different hacks to assist me in better programming myself to ditch the bad habits of being myself ... the attempted transformation tech includes things like discipline improvement/tracking strategies, neurohacking, practices for developing one's self-awareness, especially in terms of how one thinks. It's about meta-cognition skills, thinking about the algorithms driving large-language learning models and stuff like retrieval augemented generation (RAG) and a variety how of human-in-loop AI systems think, as teams, with AI-savvy humans using/extending AI as their cognitive-support technology. Melon Cave is about THINKING ... me thinking ... and the impediments to that, especially from my own bad habits. So, it's about my struggles to CAVE IN the MELONS of the personal demons that I am battling. Yes, OF COURSE ... it is terribly self-absorbed, terribly autobiographical ... so what?! ... that's the nature of this podcast. Hopefully others, who might face similar struggles, can benefit from hearing me talk about how impossible these demons have been for me to battle ... but I really do not care if people listen or not. I just want to talk about my demons, and my spiritual battle against them ... it is absolutely a spiritual sort of battle. I fully believe that one of the hardest battles any human can ever fight is to battle against the bad habits of being ourselves ... overcoming fear or worry or doubt or laziness or some other deeply, deeply personal flaw or shortcoming ... it's about developing the *little* disciplines, in order to have the discipline muscle to be able to fight larger battles is what I am talking about. Other people will have different struggles, different obstacles that they overcame ... but they overcame their personal demons by ruthlessly caving in the melons of those demons ... and Melon Cave is not special ... it's just one guy's story about CAVING IN the MELONS of his personal demons. ---- Lent offers a particularly COMPELLING time for thinking about giving up old comforts and views that have hung around just because it's oh so convenient to avoid taking on the PAIN that comes from battling the demons that lead one astray. Those demons have power over us precisely because they are so familiar, so COMFORTABLE, so CONVENIENT -- those demons have the bags of candy that we can't say no to, so we keep our personal demons around ... but Lent is for giving up comfort, giving up convenience and think seriously about what is stopping us from being more effective at helping people. We could say that the self-compassion of this nature, or battling one's own demons, is really a big part of the the basis for compassion for others ... but it can't even be about us, or about some nebulous bullshit that falls under the heading of ***Personal Growth***. Battling our personal demons is MOSTLY about being the warriors that God created, even though we're long overdue in stepping up. We cave in our personal melonsso that we can move forward and actually finally achieve what our Creator created us to achieve. Sure, almsgiving and trying to really help others is a big part of what Lent is for ... any moron can do checkbook charity or whip out the credit card and send $ ... however, this is much more PERSONAL and raw. And this cannot aimed at someone else ... my Melon Cave podcast is entirely about MY personal demons. I say that because I know that it's really, really, REALLY important to avoid ever judging someone else -- and of course, I subconsciously do it ... but if I ever realize that I have started thinking that I could help pick the mote out of someone else's eye, then I KNOW that it's a strong signal that I need to focus on dealing with the BEAM of ROUGH-HEWN TIMBER sticking out of my own eyesocket. During this season of Lent AND I intend to make an annual tradition of this, I am trying harder to renounce my demons ... because it's not about ***Personal Growth*** ... it's because as a Christian, I am obligated to spend this season [*counting THE COST*](https://www.gotquestions.org/count-the-cost.html) per Luke 14:28. The fact of the matter is that allow I have accepted Jesus Christ as my savior long ago there are old demons who have gotten in the way of me FULLY appreciating the cost that was paid. It's time for those demons to have their melons caved in, and those demons are: 1. **Lack of Discipline:** I grapple with inconsistency, often due to an aptitude for easily acquiring skills. This has resulted in a deficiency in developing the skills in sustainably improving my levels discipline for tasks requiring prolonged effort. My tendency towards mercurial behavior hinders or sabotages my ability to maintain steadfastness. * **Scripture:** * "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control." (2 Timothy 1:7) * "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable." (1 Corinthians 9:24-25) * "Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be sober-minded; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed." (1 Peter 1:13) 2. **Absence of Humility:** While I intellectually understand humility, I often operate from a perspective of high self-efficacy; I try to be a high-agency person. I vehemently reject any perception of victimhood and resist assistance, asserting my self-sufficiency. This inclination, I suspect, is viewed by God as amusing, lamentable and even pathetic. * **Scripture:** * "But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6) * "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves." (Philippians 2:3) * "Before destruction a man's heart is haughty, and before honor is humility." (Proverbs 18:12) 3. **Egotism:** Particularly in situations that evoke insecurity, such as professional interactions or familial scrutiny, I tend to dominate conversations. Instead of fostering dialogue by encouraging others to share, I often fill silences with my own perspectives. This tendency stems from a perceived obligation to carry the interaction. * **Scripture:** * "Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person." (Colossians 4:6) * "A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion." (Proverbs 18:2) * "Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent." (Proverbs 17:28) 4. **Depression and Judgment:** I frequently struggle with depressive tendencies related to perceived uncontrollable circumstances. This manifests as a critical and reproachful attitude, marked by low expectations of others and an underestimation of their efforts. I am particularly prone to judging others' struggles with addictive behaviors, a reflection of my own past and potential present challenges, rooted in a lack of faith and spiritual discipline. * **Scripture:** * "Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing." (1 Thessalonians 5:11) * "Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?" (Matthew 7:3) * "Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved." (Psalm 55:22) 5. **Inappropriate Humor:** I possess a tendency to find humor in others' struggles, particularly those related to material concerns. I often dismiss anxieties about financial comfort as trivial, believing that affluence contributes to dissatisfaction. This inclination reflects an unkindness towards those who express financial worries. * **Scripture:** * "A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." (Proverbs 17:22) However, this does not give us permission to make fun of others struggles. * "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep." (Romans 12:15) * "Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." (Ephesians 4:29) ## Conclusion It will be a longer haul than just 40 days. By acknowledging these weaknesses and grounding my efforts in scripture, I HOPE to cultivate greater self-awareness and spiritual growth. *I would ask people to pray for me, but* I suppose I will egotistically say something like "These are my crosses to bear." I guess I would rather have them make jokes about what an idiot I can be ... but I realize that people might be intimidated by the judgemental asshole I can be. In the final, most concluding of concluding remarks, these five things are what I believe: 1) I DO have all the answers; *just ask me* ... I actually am joking, can't resist it, the assertion that I know the answers is the kind of thing that's supposed to be funny -- the HARD truth is that it will be a much longer haul than just 40 days. 2) Being NICE is closely aligned with PURE evil. The most wicked demons have big bags of sweet candy of exactly the kind that we dream about ... the mostly evil demons are FULL of platitudes about kindness, compassion and NICE WORDS ... caving in the melons of personal demons requires ACTUAL action ... and repentance and begging for forgiveness when the backsliding happens ... but it's like any recovery plan that has a PRAYER of actually working -- it requires acknowledging a Higher Power AND that means telling those who are merely NICE to fuck off. 3) I am not a nice guy; I have not intentions of becoming a nice guy. I am RAW and HONEST ... and my intention is to become a better disciple of Jesus Christ ... that doesn't mean being a nice guy like someone's IMAGINARY sunday school Jesus -- it means being a RAW, HONEST, brutally frank Jesus who was never exhibited any fear of either embarrassment, demons, the baddest of bad ass centurions, or even groups of people in dominant governmental empires or sanctimonious religious bodies. 4) I actually realize that I am quite vulnerable, but also still mean as fuck ... *so don't get any ideas* ... once again, that's a joke, it's supposed to be funny, even though it isn't -- the point I am attempting to make is that I'm vulnerable and I don't care. My soul is more important. 5) We are all spiritual beings. We have souls, unless we believe and act as if we are soulless. We get to choose. Our spiritual essence transcends all time ... which means that when we pray to be WITH God, to have his Will be done -- that means that we ask that God be with our SOULS, not our egos and not our psychological personnas ... we ask God to give our souls the grace of being filled with the Holy Spirit and we try to ditch our egos and try to ditch the VERY TEMPORARY notions of *personal* growth. This is about becoming the spiritual being that God created us to be. Hopefully, this explains WHY this lenten season before Easter offers a particularly COMPELLING time for kicking off this Melon Cave podcast ... now is the time to CAVE IN the MELONS of my personal demons.
