Plus, Dr. Nick Dionne-Odom discusses his research on cancer caregiving. Dr. Dionne-Odom has developed several programs to help family caregivers of cancer patients manage stress and cope with the challenges of caregiving. He discusses his research findings, which show that these programs are beneficial for caregivers, and provides advice on how family and friends can help caregivers. He also talks about the importance of having access to one-on-one support for caregivers, no matter where they live. Lastly, he discusses the grieving process and the types of support available for those who have recently lost a loved one. "We find that many caregivers that we work with have this feeling that they need to be available 24/7 to this person, be there at all times, and that all activities, all priorities need to be centered around the patient. If one does that and you do not take care of your own health, that is not a sprint; it is a marathon. It is normal to feel anxiety and depression when caring for someone with cancer. There are resources available to help caregivers. Dr. Dionne-Odom has developed programs to help family caregivers of cancer patients manage stress and cope with the challenges of caregiving. Caregivers often experience isolation and may not want to burden their social networks. Offering specific types of assistance (e.g. cutting the grass, walking the dog, picking up the mail, doing the laundry, making meals etc.) is more likely to be accepted. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to grieving. Everyone processes loss differently, and it can take months and even years to go through the process. There is support available for those who have recently lost a loved one, such as the Medicare hospice benefit. When she was diagnosed with cervical cancer at age 25, she didn't feel like she had found a community of survivors who could help walk her through what was ahead of her. So, she CREATED her own community, , a nonprofit organization that brings cervical cancer survivors together and helps to spread awareness, education, and support. On this episode, Dr. JYP and Tamika will be talking about the origins and mission of Cervivor, and also the terrible stigma that women who have reproductive cancers face in our culture. He is the director of Lifestyle Medicine for Suvida Healthcare, serves as a national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and is an advisory council member for the Teaching Kitchen Collaborative. A professional chef, Dr. McWhorter focuses on interprofessional nutrition education through hands-on culinary medicine courses. He also is a certified strength and conditioning specialist with experience in fitness and corporate wellness. His research interests include closing the divide between culinary literacy, nutrition education, and policy. After leaving broadcasting, Mike spent several years in advertising agencies and teaching before being tapped by Sen. Tommy Tuberville to communicate with his constituents over twelve counties. Dr. Jennifer Young Pierce talks with teacher, lymphoma survivor and author Glen Mutchnick about his book "Everybody's Got Tzuris," which documents his and others' cancer journeys. "Tzuris" is a Yiddish word that means difficulties or troubles. A lot of positive things came out of Glen's diagnosis, treatment and recovery. He used his cancer troubles as a lesson in his classroom, and he says his experience has taught him to "stop sweating the small stuff," and have more compassion and empathy for others.
