10 Reasons To Master BJJ Defense and Escapes (Episode 387)
Chewy and Eugene share 10 ideas on why you should master defense and escapes in BJJ. Here are the ideas we discussed: 1. To escape effectively, you will have less fear and worries on the mat. 2. When you become skilled defensively, you can become more aggressive with your offense. 3. Increased efficiency on the mats. 4. When you avoid training escapes then you turn into a grappler with a “glass jaw.” 5. When you develop a strong defensive game, your submissions improve dramatically. 6. You get injured less when you have a good understanding of defense. 7. You can tire out your opponent more easily. 8. You will be able to weather the storm against younger and more athletic grapplers. 9. Grappling becomes more fun. 10. If you’re a competitor, it gets more difficult to get scored on. Surviving "The Pyjama Game" (Episode 380)
On this episode of the podcast, Chewy and Eugene discuss a book Chewy has been reading titled “The Pyjama Game” and discuss an idea from the book on the unique take Japanese Judokas take to martial arts. We discuss how the Japanese Judokas had a great ability to relax while being thrown which allowed them to commit to throws and takedowns with less fear because of their ability to take a throw and survive without getting injured. When this idea of survival is taken towards Jiu-Jitsu, you get to see how having the ability to relax and then also get out of bad positions will allow you to be more aggressive and go after your techniques. We also discuss why you have to put yourself in bad positions, why “looking at success leaves clues,” the rewarding feeling of getting out of uncomfortable positions in BJJ, starting with defense first, common areas where people struggle when working defensively from a bad position, the mental attitude to take into account when starting a new activity, developing timing for BJJ, setting the right expectations, being thoughtful with escapes, how much time to spend training in bad positions, and why you must have a "Jiu-Jitsu filter." The Most Beneficial Part Of BJJ Training People Avoid (Episode 361)
On this episode of the podcast, Chewy and Eugene discuss the importance of rest days and why many BJJ practitioners avoid rest days and taking time off. We start off the podcast by answering a question from “Bob,” who is a 47 y/o BJJ practitioner who tries to train daily and even some days twice per day. “Bob” says that by mid week he has a hard time with focused and technical training and feels that he needs to be on the mats as much as possible to learn. We give some advice to “Bob” on how to get the most out of training and the importance of the implementation of “rest days.” We also discuss the physical and mental signs of overtraining and how you can identify these signs and what to do about them. We also discuss why your ability to improve is related to your rate of recovery, how scrolling on social media can negatively impact concentration and learning information, and how to avoid falling behind in BJJ.
