The Weight of What Goes Unsaid: And How the Body Carries That Burden
What happens when you understand exactly what is happening around you, but the situation does not allow you to say what you really think? Professionalism, caregiving, family dynamics, difficult relationships, and everyday social situations can all require restraint. Choosing not to speak does not mean honesty has been compromised, but constantly filtering what we say can take effort—and the body may participate in that containment through jaw clenching, tightened shoulders, altered breathing, and other patterns of bracing. In this episode of Empowered Wellness Radio, Jeannie Smith explores the relationship between restraint and physical tension, drawing from what she regularly observes in her bodywork practice. She also looks at what can help when the moment has passed but the body is still holding on, including movement, tactile release, creative expression, journaling, conversation, counseling, and one particularly satisfying technique involving a bowl of ice cubes and a concrete surface. The goal is not to say everything that comes to mind. It is to recognize when restraint has served its purpose—and give the mind and body somewhere safe for the remaining energy to go. Restraint is sometimes necessary. Chronic restraint needs recovery.
