Ep 130 - Mental Health Matters (Featuring Turning Point)
In this inspiring episode, we sit down with the passionate young founders of Turning Point Clothing SK—a high school entrepreneurship class project that transformed into a powerful movement for mental health awareness. Born from a place of grief and courage, these remarkable young men—now in their early twenties—share how their own struggles became the spark for change. Their mission is rooted in the insight that many suicide survivors name a “turning point” as the moment they chose to keep going. That’s where the name comes from—and that’s what they’re offering others: hope, honesty, and a voice. Backed by the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation, these youth have ensured that every dollar raised goes directly toward mental health initiatives that matter. With wisdom beyond their years, they speak openly about anxiety, depression, grief, and the real pressures today’s teens face. Whether you're a parent, educator, or someone walking your own mental health journey, this conversation is raw, real, and necessary. You’ll walk away with deeper insight, practical support, and a sense of community. Logan's Bio: I’m a paramedic with Fort Qu’Appelle Valley Ambulance Care and a firefighter with Regina Fire & Protective Services. I co-founded Turning Point Apparel, a mental health clothing brand that donates 20% of its profits to suicide prevention. I also helped start the You Matter Foundation to support accessible mental health care and education. This work is deeply personal to me. Ep 124 Escaping Violence (Featuring Lisa Williams of Shelter Movers)
04/23/2025
Ep 124 Escaping Violence (Featuring Lisa Williams of Shelter Movers)
This week, we’re honored to spotlight the launch of Shelter Movers Regina, led by the incredible Lisa Williams. As the 11th chapter of Shelter Movers in Canada, this life-saving service is opening a path to safety for women and children fleeing abuse—right here in our community. Shelter Movers began in Toronto in 2016 with one father, Marc Hull-Jacquin, who was on parental leave when he realized the gap in support for survivors of domestic violence. Since then, it has grown into a national organization, offering free moving and storage so that women don’t have to choose between staying in danger or fleeing with nothing. For moms escaping violence, it’s often not as simple as just leaving. Without this kind of help, many are forced to stay—or end up on the streets. Shelter Movers partners with local agencies to create a safe, coordinated exit, helping with logistics like moving dates, pet care, and essential resources. What makes Shelter Movers different is their focus on dignity and autonomy. They offer secure storage so you can hold onto your children's favorite toys, your family photos, or furniture—your safe items. You might not have a place for them today, but when you're ready, they’ll be there. This episode is a tribute to the brave mothers, women, and families who make the hardest choice—and to the compassionate hands that help carry them forward. Volunteer, Support or Connect with Shelter Movers: About Lisa Williams: With her extensive experience in community outreach and deep commitment to supporting survivors of abuse, Lisa Williams is poised to lead the chapter in its mission to offer safe and dignified moving and storage to those in need. When asked about her new role in ensuring the successful launch of Shelter Movers services in Regina, Lisa says: "Our community needs this service and the agencies that serve folks experiencing family violence are eager for a solution that will help save lives. Leaving a violent home is the worst day of their lives for women, their children and their pets. We support their brave choice to leave. Our unique organization will take care of their belongings and the move during an already stressful transition. I am honoured to bring this option to Regina this summer for families who need a safe moving option." If you liked this weeks podcast hit follow, subscribe, rate or leave a review. First, we tackle the preschool years when life feels chaotic, finances are tight, you're overworked, and the kids seem to never listen—we're all just craving breaks! Next, we shift to the elementary years, where fights center around screen time, extracurriculars, and learning when to stand firm or let go. Then, it's on to the pre-teen and teen stages, where battles revolve around cell phones, driving, and navigating the tension of having a nearly adult child who lacks full responsibility. Throughout each stage, we share survival strategies and discuss how easy it is to fall into blame and miscommunication. But don’t worry—it does get easier! Ep 109 Why Kids are Bad After School
09/11/2024
Ep 109 Why Kids are Bad After School
Welcome back to Families Matter Most Podcast! This week, we're diving into a topic that's both common and challenging for many parents: why do our kids act up and let loose in unhealthy ways right after school? We'll explore the reasons behind this behavior and offer actionable tips to help you manage it without feeling overwhelmed. Big Breath, Moms! Before we dive into our tips for the kids, here's a quick strategy for you, the parent: Set an alarm for 3 p.m. every day. Use this time for a 5-minute coffee break or a moment to yourself. This brief pause will help you stay calm and collected, ensuring you're at your best to support your kids through their after-school transition. 4 Tips to Help Your Kids Adjust After School: 1. Crunchy Snack Time: Encourage your child to have a crunchy snack when they get home. Crunchy foods can help them decompress and release some of the day's tension. Plus, it’s a great way to keep their energy levels steady. 2. Quiet Time: Give your child 10 to 15 minutes of quiet time right after school. This short break allows them to unwind from the hustle and bustle of the school day and helps them transition more smoothly into the home environment. 3. Move Their Body: Physical activity is crucial. Whether it's a quick run around the yard, a dance session, or a short bike ride, moving their body helps release pent-up energy and improves their mood. 4. Healthy Relationships: Ensure that the time immediately after school is reserved for healthy interactions. Avoid diving straight into difficult conversations or tasks. Instead, focus on positive and supportive engagement to foster a better mood and smoother transition. Managing after-school behavior doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With these simple strategies—taking a calm moment for yourself, encouraging a crunchy snack, allowing quiet time, incorporating physical activity, and nurturing positive interactions—you can help your child adjust more easily and create a more harmonious end to the day. Thanks for tuning in to this week’s episode of Families Matter Most! If you found these tips helpful, don’t forget to subscribe, leave a review, and share this episode with other parents who might benefit. Until next time, take care and keep nurturing those little ones with love and patience!

Ep 104 Five Skills Your Kid Needs
Here are 5 Rules for YOU to have an amazing and awesome life, which will help you be successful. All behaviour is communication, whether it is behaviour we like or we don’t like it is all communicating something. Our children’s behaviour is also connected to feelings, and these feelings are connected to developed or undeveloped skills. BUT we can help our kids develop these adult skills NOW so they can be successful, even now. Is this something you want to see happen? Developing great character and communication skills might take some work, so I am including an infographic printable to help you and your child grow these skills. Use this for your own purposes or to work with your child on choosing which skills your child needs to work on, which skills they are doing well at, and making a plan to work on these together.
