Radio Episode 159: The Royal Palace: Salome Seductress Princess With each step Salome took towards the banquet hall the more determined she became. Her jewels jiggled as she came to the last step and she exhaled. Music and laughter echoes from down the hallway. She was close. Her mother had told her not to let her down and she would not. She would make Herodias proud of her. Before entering the grand hall she stopped at yet another mirror of the palace and looked at her reflection in the shimmering lights of the night. She was decorated with costly garlands and flowers, sparkling jewels, anklets and flashing bracelets. She had to admit that she was a vision of beauty and loveliness. With little covering and no modesty, every part of her body felt exposed to the public. Her crimson full lips smiled at her reflection. “Show time Salome. Make your mother proud.” She added sarcastically. With that she pranced into the room and waited for the musician to begin their low rhythmic sound of their musical instruments. A gasp erupted from around the room as the men admired her beauty. She looked up and saw Herod gulp and mouth gape at seeing her barely dressed body. She felt indecent and unscrupulous like a lady of the night and not a princess, but this is what her mother wanted of her. She was going to give her more than she had asked. The music began and she started her sultry dance. She forgot her mother. Herod. The guests and the servants watching. The music reeled at her senses and she escaped to another world. A world of pleasure and happiness. A world where her mother did not exist. Radio Episode 158: The Royal Palace: Jehosheba Fearless Princess All these years she had known that God had given her, her husband Jehoiada the high priest of the temple. The palace had been in uproar when she had chosen to marry below her station. Being a princess she had been expected to marry a prince or a King. But, Jehosheba had always felt that the palace was not the place for her. She felt closest to her God when she was worshiping at the temple. The connection she felt strengthened her soul. With her mind twirling with thoughts, she walked Adina to the extra bedroom and put her on the bed to sleep. She rang the bell and asked Hila to bring Adina a hot calming drink. Seeing her friend’s fluttering eye lids, Jehosheba walked out the room and took a deep breath. The royal family was no more. Had Athaliah killed the wives and concubines that lived it he palace? Had she killed Ahaziahs wife Zibiah? Then like a lightning a name came into her mind. Baby Joash! Athalia had killed baby Joash! She gasped for breath and leaned onto the pillar of the temple. Her mind raced. What if the soldier’s hadn’t gotten there yet? What if there was a chance? She had to do something! Her heart trembled at the thought of facing Athaliah. She wiped the little wet droplets on her forehead. Why must she be afraid? She was no longer a young girl hidden in the shadows watching helplessly from her bedroom balcony as young girls were taken to be sacrificed to Baal. She was a woman now and she had her God. The God her mother had showed her. Her mother had been one of the concubines of her father but a God fearing woman. She had died from a sickness when Jehosheba was younger. How she missed her. The last time they had been together, her mother had prayed over her. Radio Episode 157: The Royal Palace: Wicked Queen Jezebel Silently she hid behind one of the thick pillars and watched. It was Jezebel and Ahab. They stood in front of the Baal god. Another shrine had been erected for their worship. The golden half oxen and half man wasn’t very big in size. However they had built him on a higher part and had built seven steps for them to climb and reach the image. On the sides of the statue were men with drums drumming while women and men dressed in white danced as in trance around the statue. Elana recognised them as Jezebel’s priests and priestess. They cut their flesh with sharp objects till blood came out. They splattered it across to the their god while moaning, groaning and chanting in gibberish. Ahab stood to one side and watched as Jezebel dressed in a dark sheer gown walked toward Baal with her arms outstretched holding what looked like an animal. Her voice rang loud as she screeched and called names to her god. Her head thrown back as if in ecstasy. Elana felt her body begin to tremble. This must be her witchcraft she performed on a weekly basis. She had heard others speak of it but never had she witnessed it herself. Should she be surprised? Queen Jezebel’s has been brought to the northern kingdom to be King Ahab’s bride to strengthen the military alliance between her kingdom of Phoenicia and the Kingdom of Israel. Her father King Ethbaal was not only a king but also the high priest of Baal. This ritual had been seemed into her since childhood. Fire spitted out of the laps of the golden oxen where a gold giant bowl sat and as Jezebel reached the top of the step and the bowl, she threw her head back and screamed ‘rain’ and she hurled the animal into the fire pit. She bowed low, screeched. Radio Episode 155: The Royal Palace: Princess of the Nile "She scanned her surroundings and suddenly she saw something floating amongst the tall grass. She squinted; from the distance it looked like a baby crocodile. The skin looked thick leathery and scale like. Her heart began to beat and she swam toward her maid. “Onofria!” she shouted. “There’s something in the water amongst the reeds.” She pointed weakly to the distance. Onofria and Nefret hurried to her side as she stayed closer to the steps and Bahiti stopped playing. Slowly, Onofria walked further into the water, her neck craned scanning the waters. Anisenath followed close behind feeling afraid of what could be lurking beneath. She had never encountered any danger before, maybe she was overacting. Onofria reached the point where the princess had been before and she let out a laugh. “My lady, it looks like it is something like a child’s toy. A basket of some sort.” Anisenath tilted her head to one side and looked over her maids shoulder. The basket disentangled itself from the reeds and slowly floated to where it was more visible. “Oh Onofria, you are correct it’s a basket! I do not think it is a toy. It looks a little big.” Anisenath curiosity rose. “Fetch it for me.. I need to see what is inside.” Onofria swam slowly to the basket and took hold of it. Slowly she pushed it toward the princess until it came to a stop. Filled with awe, Anisenath stared at the strange basket made of papyrus and it had been coated with tar and pitch. The strong scent itched her delicate nose. Slowly she lifted the lid and suddenly the face of a baby, all scrunched up, burst into tears. The cry of the baby filled the early morning and she gasped. “It’s a baby!” her throat constricted at the thought of this precious child having been in the Nile invested crocodile waters. Who would do such a cruel act?......
