Possessions

Possessions
Possessions … those things we own. How much do we really need…versus how much we want? Having the nicest this or that is how we think we’re defined. Success in America (and in many other places) is defined by material items, by our salary, by the size of our home, by the car we drive. We’re worried about our appearance. Do we have the nicest shoes…and 15 pairs of them. I cannot say that I have this all right, that I have very little possessions and no shoes. LOL. That would be a lie. I honestly have WAY too much “stuff.” That’s probably why God is highlighting this topic to me. - to show me that I have too much stuff. - to remind me NOT to allow this stuff to become more important than Him … His ways … His wisdom … His call on my life. - to be willing to give my stuff away if someone else has a need. - to not allow my possessions to possess me. Possessions - do not define success. Possessions will possess you if you allow them too. Think about it… - got to get that newest phone - got to grab that newest pair of … fill in the blank with your favorite ... shoes…purse…etc. - my car is a few years old…need a new one - the neighbor bought a new, big truck. I have go buy bigger and newer. This list could go on forever. Don’t do that to yourself. Don’t let your possession possess you. You might get that new, nice thing and feel great, maybe successful for a short time, but then what’s next? Our value and worth are not defined by our possessions. I love this quote I read from Tim Tebow recently in a book called "Disruptive Compassion" by Hal Donaldson, who is the CEO of Convoy of Hope. Hall quoted this from Tim, “When we talk about having a life of significance and meaning, it’s not about fame or money or resources. It’s about people and lives and hearts. That’s my biggest passion in life.” I LOVE what Hal says in regards to this quote. He says, “In other words, life is not about how much we possess, it’s about much we can give away.” YES! That’s so good! To take this another direction, let’s look at the season. It’s Christmas. While I love gifts and even more so LOVE giving, I want to remember the season is not about what I get, the possessions I receive, but about Jesus. What He gives us IS much more valuable than ANYTHING we own or can own. He gives eternal gifts, gifts that don’t fade, that cannot get engulfed by flames or that will not perish when our mortal bodies do. Yes, He gives the best gifts - salvation, freedom, redemption, restoration, peace, love overflowing, and so much more. A material item can bring happiness for a time, but what Jesus gives is eternal and no matter what heaviness or pain the world throws at us, His gifts…His love…His peace…they won’t leave. They aren’t for a time. They are eternal. What a beautiful thought. We can receive from and have a relationship with Emmanuel, the Wonderful Counselor, the Prince of Peace. I’ll take this over any possession one can give me or that I can buy. Thank you for joining me on this journey friends… for walking life with me! Be blessed friends because you are a blessing!
