Legends Podcast #754; Frequency (2000) - Chronovember
Fall back in time with Legends Podcast! All month long, we’re talking about time travel, paradoxes, and Andre Braugher aging like a fine wine. In the year 2000, Primal Fear and Fallen director Gregory Hoblit and writer Toby Emmerich brought a new twist to the time travel genre: using ham radio to connect two generations of a New York City family. Dennis Quaid plays the father, a firefighter, and Jim Caviezel plays the son, a cop, who realize that their special connection can change both their lives. But when things change for the better, a serial killer is set loose, threatening both timelines. The film was a modest success and was later remade as a one-season TV series on The CW. But is this time travel thriller worth tuning in to these 25 years later? Through the curtain of the aurora, our hosts are broadcasting on Frequency! This is Chronovember! Legends Podcast #753; Primer (2004) - Chronovember
Fall back in time with Legends Podcast! All month long, we’re talking about time travel, paradoxes, and deducing that the problem is recursive. In 2004, independent filmmaker Shane Carruth released his first feature, a time travel twister made on a budget of $7,000. Carruth wrote, produced, directed, edited, scored, and starred in this film that won the Grand Jury Prize - Dramatic at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, and went on to earn 120 times its budget. In the 77-minute film, two inventors discover time travel and exploit it for personal gain, but things quickly spin out of control. Join us as we enter the failsafe box to try to understand the plot of Primer. Hopefully there’s not a test afterwards! This is Chronovember! Legends Podcast #752; Pleasantville (1998) - Chronovember
Fall back in time with Legends Podcast! All month long, we’re talking about time travel, paradoxes, and separating out the things that are pleasant from the things that are unpleasant. In 1998, Big and Dave screenwriter Gary Ross made his directorial debut with a quirky comedy starring Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon. The young up-and-coming stars were cast opposite stalwarts William H. Macy, Joan Allen, Jeff Daniels, and J.T. Walsh in a romp through classic television - literally. When a mischievous TV repairman (played, of course, by sitcom legend Don Knotts) sends the Ninties teens into a Fifties Leave It To Beaver knock-off, things only get stranger when their modern sensibilities start turning the black-and-white town all sorts of newfangled colors. Despite positive reviews and a first-place opening weekend, the film ultimately failed to enchant audiences and became a box office flop. Now we’re tuning in to see what all the hubbub is about in Pleasantville. But does it belong in reruns, or should we burn every copy we find? This is Chronovember! Legends Podcast #751; The Substance (2024) - Legends of Halloween
It’s Lobster’s birthday, and what better way to acknowledge the toll aging takes on our bodies than to watch a movie about what goes wrong when we try to cheat the clock. From writer-director Coralie Fargeat comes the tale of Elizabeth Sparkle, a former sex symbol and acclaimed actress turned daytime tv aerobics instructor. When a mysterious treatment offers to restore her youthful appearance, the realization that beauty is only skin deep is only the first of many horrors that await. Starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley in dual roles, this 2024 release burst onto the scene at Cannes, where it was nominated for the Palme d'Or and Fargeat won Best Screenplay. After a wide release, which saw the film bring in $80 million through word-of-mouth social media marketing, it earned five Oscar noms, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Moore, taking home the statue for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. But appearance isn’t everything, so let’s take a long hard look in the mirror and decide if we like what we see. Is The Substance all style, and no substance? Or is it the stuff that dreams are made of? And for Legends of Halloween, that means it’s also the stuff of nightmares! Legends Podcast #750; Dolls (1987) - Legends of Halloween
In 1987, Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon tapped into a force more terrifying than any zombie, vampire, werewolf, mummy, alien or otherworldly threat: little girls’ playthings. This film takes us off the beaten path to a remote mansion on the longest night in the world. Inside, horrors await, but first we must be served soup by two kindly old folks, before all hell breaks loose in the form of two-foot tall toys. With child actor Carrie Lorraine taking the lead in this funhouse horror comedy - what is it with us putting kids in danger this month? - absurd kills and slapstick one-liners abound when the film finally gets going. And once the toys come to life, the only mystery is… who’s pulling the strings? Join us as we play with ourselves… I mean, uh, our toys… while watching Dolls! Legends Podcast #749; 28 Years Later (2025) - Legends of Halloween
After nearly two decades in development hell, the long-awaited continuation of the 28 Days Later saga finally chewed its way into cinemas. Returning are director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, the creative team behind the original films. The film sees a time jump as well, as it is now nearly three decades since the Rage virus turned the U.K. into mindless zombies. We follow Spike, a young boy who has grown up on an isolated island off the British coast, as he navigates a coming-of-age trip to the mainland impress his father by killing his first infected. Of course, things go sideways, and what starts as bonding turns into a fight for survival - and the realization that the living must face their own inner rage. With multiple sequels on the way, this reanimated franchise seems hungry for box-office dollars, but is it too much, too late? Join us as we unwrap the bloody present of 28 Years Later! Legends Podcast #748; Nosferatu (2024) - Legends of Halloween
Last year, director Robert Eggers, who burst onto the horror filmmaking scene with The Witch and The Lighthouse, premiered his remake of the classic 1922 silent German Expressionist vampire film. Starring Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Willem Dafoe, the film sees Bill Skarsgård step into the iconic Max Schreck role of Count Orlock. This is adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula bewitched audiences, becoming Egger’s highest-grossing film to date, and earned four Academy Awards nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. But as we kick off our month of spooky movies, are our hosts seduced by this symphony of horror. Or, like a bad cover version, is Eggers’ take ultimately toothless? Legends Podcast #747; Kingdom of Heaven (2005)
Twenty years ago, director Ridley Scott returned to the historical epic, the same genre that won him an Oscar in 2000 for Gladiator. Swapping the Roman colosseum for the Middle East in the time of the Crusades, Scott assembled an all-star cast including Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, Brendan Gleeson, Liam Neeson, and an uncredited Edward Norton. A post-9/11 movie about Christians fighting Muslims would have seemed an easy win at the box office, but the film performed poorly stateside while doing well in Arabic-speaking countries, especially Egypt. Scott blamed the failure on studio meddling; he has since disowned the theatrical cut, and claims instead that his director's cut is the definitive version. But art, like peace in the Middle East, can be elusive. Join us as we walk into battle with the Lord for Kingdom of Heaven. Legends Podcast #746; The Lego Batman Movie (2017)
It’s a movie that reimagines one of the most iconic superheroes in history — not with grit and gloom, but with plastic bricks, rapid-fire jokes, and a whole lot of heart. Directed by Chris McKay and released in 2017, this animated spin-off features a voice cast that’s nothing short of legendary: Will Arnett as the brooding and self-absorbed Batman / Bruce “Bruno” Wayne, Michael Cera as the wide-eyed Robin, Rosario Dawson as the fierce Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, Ralph Fiennes as the ever-wise Alfred, and Zach Galifianakis as the Joker who really just wants to be in some kind of a weird love/hate homo-erotic relationship with the Bat. It’s a story about loneliness, ego, and the power of teamwork — all wrapped in a whirlwind of Bat-gadgets, pop culture references, and surprise villain cameos. So what movie are we talking about today? The Lego Batman Movie. What’s the password? IRONMAN SUCKS For more geeky podcasts visit You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Legends Podcast #745; E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
In 1982, director Steven Spielberg followed up Raiders of the Lost Ark with a family-centered feature about a young boy who meets an alien, based on his own childhood experience of creating an imaginary friend after his parents’ divorce. With a budget of just over $10 million, Spielberg and screenwriter Melissa Mathison brought the alien to life with the help of Italian special effects master Carlo Rambaldi, with the music of John Williams hitting all the right notes. Add in some product placement from Reese’s Pieces (let’s not talk about that Atari video game) and a stellar young cast including Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore, and the flick was a hit. In fact, it surpassed Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time, until Spielberg’s own Jurassic Park broke the record in 1993. Much of the film feels iconic now, from William’s score to the flying bikes. Critic Roger Ebert, in an essay he wrote in 2002 as a letter to his grandchildren about watching it with them, wrote of that moment: “I remember when I saw the movie at Cannes. Even the audience there, people who had seen thousands of movies, let out a whoop at that moment.” But despite the praise, it’s worth remembering that Columbia Pictures put the film in turnaround, and M&Ms passed on the opportunity to feature their candy because they thought the film would scare children. So, over 40 years since its release, is E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial still worth phoning home about? Or is it better left in the back of the childhood closet? Legends Podcast #744; The Martian (2015)
Director Ridley Scott returned to outer space with the 2013 Alien prequel Prometheus, set on a distant world, and two years later, when he adapted Andy Weir’s best-selling 2011 novel, Scott visited another extraterrestrial destination, albeit one relatively closer to home: Mars. On the Red Planet, Matt Damon plays an astronaut stranded by fate who must survive in the harsh environment while his NASA colleagues come up with plans to rescue him. With an ensemble cast, including Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, Mackenzie Davis, Donald Glover, and Benedict Wong, the film was an interplanetary success, premiering at Number One and going on to top the box office for multiple non-consecutive weekends. Just a month after its release, the film surpassed Gladiator to become Scott's highest-grossing film at the domestic box office. With Weir’s novel Project Hail Mary set to get the big screen treatment next year, we’re visiting The Martian for its tenth anniversary, and we promise to bring him home when we're done! Legends Podcast #743; You’ve Got Mail (1998)
It’s autumn in New York, and we’re feeling the love with another Nora Ephron rom-com. This week, we’re dialing up the classic Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan tale of “boy meets girl in internet chat room, boy discovers girl's true identity, and then boy kills girl’s business and destroys her livelihood.” Audiences loved the third team-up of Hanks & Ryan (following Joe Versus the Volcano and Sleepless in Seattle) in this flick that retells Miklós László’s 1937 play Parfumerie, which had previously been adapted as The Shop Around the Corner in 1940 and In the Good Old Summertime in 1949. Updated for the early online era, this version features an ensemble including Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey, Steve Zahn, Dave Chappelle, and Jean Stapleton. Although the movie booked over $250 million at the box office, not all critics penned rave reviews. One reviewer called the film “almost unwatchably saccharine, representing pretty much everything wrong with today's big-budget, high-concept Hollywood filmmaking,” while others bemoaned its rampant product placement. Less than two years after its release, the corporate marriage was consummated when America Online, the originator of the film’s titular salutation, and studio Warner Bros. merged to form AOL Time Warner. But will our hosts fall for this rom-com spam? Or will You’ve Got Mail be left on read? For more geeky podcasts visit You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Legends Podcast #742; Aug-Heist: The Getaway - The Next Three Days (2010)
We’ve almost run out of time for Aug-Heist: The Getaway, but not before we go on the run with one final film. This week, we’re finally doing a proper prison break movie with a little-seen 2010 slow-burn thriller from director Paul Haggis, who won back-to-back Best Picture Oscars with Million Dollar Baby and Crash. Russell Crowe stars as a husband willing to go to any length to free his wrongly convicted wife from prison, even if that means breaking her out himself. Co-starring Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde, Lennie James, Brian Dennehy, Liam Neeson, the film adapts the 2008 French release Anything for Her (Pour Elle) and was filmed on location in Pittsburgh. But with a dead-on 50% Tomatometer score, what final verdict will our hosts hand down? The summer of The Getaway is almost over, so we'd better enjoy The Next Three Days! Legends Podcast #741; Aug-Heist: The Getaway - Reservoir Dogs (1992)
This week on Aug-Heist: The Getaway, director Quentin Tarantino brings us his debut outing, Reservoir Dogs! As a video-store clerk turned first-time filmmaker, he directed, wrote, and appeared in this indie hit, which took Sundance by storm as part of the “Class of ‘92.” The film follows six suited, code-named strangers - including Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi, Tim Roth, and Tarantino himself - brought together for a jewelry heist. While the film never shows the actual heist, the lead-up and aftermath are explored in bloody detail, as the Dogs turn on each other when the job goes south. Boasting all of his directorial hallmarks - graphic violence, extended dialogue featuring profanity and references to popular culture, and epic needledrops (here in the form of K-Billy's Super Sounds of the Seventies) - the film immediately established Tarantino as a made man in Hollywood and was later named the greatest independent film of all time by Empire Magazine. But do our hosts feel compelled to tip their server, er, uh, director, or are we listening to the world’s smallest violin… in a pitch that only Reservoir Dogs can hear? This week on Aug-Heist: The Getaway, fact meets fiction with the “based on a true story about a fake movie” Argo! Set during the Iranian hostage crisis, this ensemble escape thriller stormed the box office and awards season, raking in over $230 million and winning Oscars for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing. Director Ben Affleck was notably snubbed and not nominated by the Academy, but he also stars as CIA exfiltration expert Tony Mendez, along with a “most wanted” list of prestige movie actors, including Alan Arkin, Kyle Chandler, Bryan Cranston, Tate Donovan, Victor Garber, John Goodman, Scoot McNairy, and Chris Messina. This is Aug-Heist: The Getaway! This week, we’re running away with Fantastic Mr. Fox, a 2009 animated film directed by Wes Anderson. The quote-unquote “Fantastic Mr. Fox” - voiced by George Clooney - and his colorful cast of animal accomplices - including the voices of Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, and Bill Murray - must escape from one perilous predicament after another when faced with the wrath of three local farmers. Anderson and co-writer Noah Baumbach adapted the beloved children's book by Roald Dahl, expanded on its plot, and created a vibrant world in stop-motion. The result was a hit, with the flick feasting on its fill at the box office and awards shows. But will it get off scot free with our fantastic foursome of fearsome hosts? Legends Podcast #736; Toy Soldiers (1991)
In 1991, Daniel Petrie, the director of Beverly Hills Cop and Turner & Hooch, brought a script he'd co-written with David Koepp, based on the novel by William P. Kennedy, to the big screen. Starring Sean Astin a year before he had everyone chanting his name in Rudy and Wil Wheaton a year after he’d beamed off the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, this film had its finger on the pulse of moviemaking trends. When the red dawn sees an elite boarding school under siege by Colombian terrorists, leaving the students running scared from lethal weapons, these kids must stand and deliver to defend their home away from home alone, or risk dying hard and ending up in the dead poets society. With Louis Gossett Jr., Denholm Elliott, Jerry Orbach, R. Lee Ermey, and Andrew Divoff rounding out the ensemble cast, this coming-of-age action flick was a modest success at the box office, but quickly forgotten, finishing 87th at the ‘91 box office. But old playthings never die, they just sink to the bottom of the toybox, so we’re digging up and dusting off Toy Soldiers - and we’re gonna play with it for a little bit. Legends Podcast #735; Sinners (2025)
Director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan have cashed in on teaming up over the past decade, from Coogler’s debut Fruitvale Station, to Black Panther, to Creed. This 2025 film, their fifth collaboration, sees Coogler double down on Michael B. Jordan - quite literally. Set in the 1932 Mississippi Delta, this genre-defying film sees Jordan play twin brothers who seek to open their own juke joint, only to be threatened by a clan of vampires. The film co-stars Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Jack O'Connell, Jayme Lawson, Delroy Lindo and introduces singer Miles Caton in his first film role. Earning $365 million at the box office to date, it is one of the best-received films of the year so far and an early contender for an Oscar nomination. Fifty years ago, the summer blockbuster was born. Director Steven Spielberg, in his second official turn at the helm, adapted Peter Benchley’s best-selling novel about a New England resort town plagued by a great white shark. Despite production delays and budget overruns, this $9 million “high-concept” thriller starring Roy Schneider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfus took a $477.9 million bite out of the box office and became the highest-grossing film of all time, until the release of Star Wars two years later. Spawning multiple sequels and imitations, this film remains the undisputed master of the seas. But will our hosts fall hook, line, and sinker for Jaws? Legends Podcast #733; Bone Tomahawk (2015)

Legends Podcast #733; Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Ten years ago, 2015 was the year of the epic Western. Two films, Alejandro Iñárritu’s The Revenant and Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, clocked in at an average length of 170 minutes and scored a combined 15 Academy Award nominations, winning 4 between them. As a pair, the two films brought in nearly $700 million at the box office. Along with John Maclean’s Sundance darling Slow West, the year marked a return to prominence of the western genre, foreshadowing the next decade’s breakout hits like Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone and Hell or High Water, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Slipping somewhat under the radar in 2015 was the directorial debut of S. Craig Zahler, a prolific author and screenwriter with a penchant for wit, grit, and gore. Zahler cast Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, and Richard Jenkins in a Western akin to John Ford’s The Searchers by way of Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes. When townsfolk are kidnapped by a clan of troglodyte cannibals, four men - the sheriff, a cowboy, a gunslinger, and the back-up deputy - ride out as a posse to rescue them. The indie film quickly earned praise for its direction, dialogue, and disturbing imagery, and has built a cult following in the decade hence. But is our posse of hosts in agreement on how Bone Tomahawk lands? Or will we, too, be split down the middle? For more geeky podcasts visit You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Legends Podcast #732; October Sky (1999)
Director Joe Johnston, who worked in design and VFX for George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, is best known for effects-heavy family pics like Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, The Rocketeer, and Jumanji. But in 1999, he tried his hand at the “based on a true story” inspirational biopic genre, based on the early life of NASA engineer Homer Hickam, as told in Hickam’s memoir Rocket Boys. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, Chris Owen, and Laura Dern, the film tells the story of a coal miner’s son who was inspired by the launch of Sputnik in 1957 to take up rocketry with a group of friends against his father’s wishes. A critical and commercial success, the anagramically-titled October Sky sounds stellar. But over two decades later, does it still shoot for the moon, or is it a dud? Legends Podcast #730; Better Man (2024)
One of last year’s most puzzling releases came in the form of a musical biopic chronicling the rise to fame of British pop star Robbie Williams. While following all the usual biopic tropes, this film made one rather noticeable swerve by portraying its star and subject as an anthropomorphic CGI chimpanzee. With Williams providing the narration and singing and Jonno Davies providing the voice and motion capture, the film, directed by The Greatest Showman’s Michael Gracey, never acknowledges this species-bending premise while playing it straight. Despite Robbie Williams’ mega-stardom in the UK, audiences didn’t swing into theaters to see it there, or in the States where he’s far less well known: the $110 million dollar flick only brought in $22.5 million at the box office. Critics, however, were mostly kind to the film, which received a record-breaking 16 nominations at the 2025 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, winning in nine categories, including Best Film. But will our hosts see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil? Or does Better Man deserve worse? For more geeky podcasts visit You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Legends Podcast #726; Megalopolis (2024)
Director Francis Ford Coppola is widely regarded as one of the greatest directors of the twentieth century, the visionary force behind The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and dozens of other films. For decades, Coppola had sought to make a film drawing parallels between the fall of the Roman Republic and the future of the United States by retelling the Catilinarian conspiracy in modern New York, but was unable to secure studio funding. After three decades of fits and starts, Coppola ultimately spent $120 million of his own money to make the film, drawn largely from the fortune he made in the winemaking business. Released in fall of 2024, the ensemble cast features Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, and Laurence Fishburne. After a troubled production and a rocky reception at Cannes, where the film premiered, Coppola was forced to spend additional money to market the film, but the trailer was removed for using fabricated pull quotes. Ultimately, the film grossed only $14.3 million at the box office - barely 10% of what it cost to make. But is this film - the ultimate vanity project - worth the wait or does it collapse under the weight of its own ambitions? All roads lead to Megalopolis! Legends Podcast #725; A Goofy Movie (1995)
We’re continuing our journey on the open road this month with a classic Disney movie released three decades ago. In this film, a father and son come to terms with the circle of life while realizing the importance of being prepared to face the challenges of a road trip. Far from meaning “no worries” for the son (who wants to feel the love tonight with his crush), the efforts of the father (who just can’t wait to be king of the road) to reconnect with his son lead to a veritable stampede of sight gags, one-liners, and comedies-of-error. No, it’s not The Lion King! Based on the Disney Afternoon cartoon series Goof Troop, produced by Jeffrey Katzenberg, and featuring the voice talents of Bill Farmer, Jason Marsden, Jim Cummings, Kellie Martin, and Rob Paulsen, it was a massive flop on release and was critically panned. But in the thirty years since, it has gone on to become a cult classic, with a direct-to-video sequel in the year 2000, multiple pop-culture references (including in Donald Glover’s Atlanta), and a documentary, Not Just a Goof, released just this month. Ladies and goofs, it’s A Goofy Movie! But will we be seeing it “I 2 I”? For more visit You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Please subscribe and give us a positive review.
