This week takes us to Maine’s Shawshank Prison for a 1994 film directed by Frank Darabont based on a Stephen King novella. When Andy Dufresne is locked up for a crime he claims to be innocent of, he’ll go to extraordinary lengths to survive, including ripping off the crooked warden and planning an elaborate escape. With an ensemble cast including Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton, William Sadler, Clancy Brown, Gil Bellows, and James Whitmore, the film bombed at the box office upon initial release. However, the film scored strong reviews and seven Oscar nominations, and with word-of-mouth finally catching up, it went on to become the top-rented film of 1995. The film began airing regularly on the cable network TNT, turning it into something of a pop culture phenomenon. Today, the film frequently appears on lists of the best films ever made - a true example of a film that was sentenced to cinematic obscurity but escaped and stole the hearts of its audience.
