STAIT has come on board as a sponsor of the "Mandy Gibbons Podcast Show - Resilience For Men"... and sponsoring my book "RESILIENT MAN - FIREPIT"... which will be released later this year. Shaun and Sam, the Founders of Stait have been incredibly supportive both of my work with helping Men build resilient lives. In today's episode I chat with Shaun about his own resilience story... How his upbringing and life experiences instilled strength and values that have helped him get through challenges in business, relationships and personal growth. STAIT, Shaun and Sam are strong supporters of Veterans, including the Veteran Games... We share more about that in today's podcast. Approaching his 50s, and busy with a demanding corporate career, Shaun was aware that ageing might start to affect his performance day-to-day. Whilst most people might consider this a normal part of the aging process, Shaun chose differently. Why give up on feeling and being your best just because you're getting older? As a busy CEO, Shaun had always been determined to outperform himself each day. Having failed to find a product to support his health in the way he needed, it was his wife and co-founder Samantha "Sam" who suggested he should create something for himself. Which is exactly what he did. Enjoy today's episode, legends! GOLD ON TODAY'S show...๐ฅโค๏ธ ------------------------------ ๐ Shaun shares his story of being born in the rural part of England, he was exposed to hard work by both his father and grand father. And was exposed to people doing epic shit from an early age. Shaun's Mum passed away when he was 17 years old... which changed his life from a happy family life... to this Dad struggling with not knowing how to grieve... which lead to issues with Shaun and his father... and Shaun leaving home. It shaped Shaun's life from an early age and that no-one was coming to save him. ๐ Shaun went onto university... then became an accountant, having his own practice. Got married and had children. ๐ Shaun talks about how he found life at the bottom of the bottle at the age of 35 years old, his marriage breaking down and him and his wife separated. ๐ The owner of a company that Shaun was working with asked him to attend a health event in the United States. Shaun met Sam in Vegas at an event, they became friends. And didn't catch up again until a bit later... which is a pretty epic story... ๐ I asked Shaun to share that story of what led him to getting together with Sam (Shaun and Sam have been married for 12 years now)... Mainly because I was curious as they're a super aligned and amazing couple. :) ๐ Shaun and Sam started traveling for work together... You can watch or listen to the podcast for the rest of the details. ๐ Shaun shared how the universe gives you what you need, not what you want. ๐ We talk about the inner strength and fortitude that Shaun and Sam have as individuals and together... Communication, their vision... ๐ Shaun talks about relationships and if they nurture each person in the relationship... and is the unit stronger than the individuals. ๐ I ask Shaun about his passion for health... he grew up with physically strong Men in his family...And spent years being around weights and gyms... ๐ When Shaun started playing American football, he attended old school bodybuilding gyms...and studied all the bodybuilding greats. Which Way Is Your Warrior Facing- an operational manual for current serving and veterans transitioning into civilian lifeโ. Barry's a registered Psychologist with 20 years experience providing compassionate and relevant support to Australian Veterans and their families impacted by military service. As a Combat Veteran Barry uses his operational experience creating language, providing tools and insights to facilitate effective transitioning into civilian life. In 2022 Barry published his book โWhich Way Is Your Warrior Facing - an operational manual for current serving and veterans transitioning into civilian lifeโ. Barry's core vision is that no Veteran should have to come home to die. Side note: I absolutely loved this episode... We covered a lot of ground...Whether you're currently serving, a Veteran, a family member, or in the field of supporting those who have served... I highly recommend you watch or listen to this episode. Barry's insights, experience and love for supporting his "brothers" is freaking beautiful. GOLD ON TODAY'S show... ๐ Barry shares his story of being born and growing up in what was then called Southern Rhodesia. Playing a lot of sports, then went onto University, spent 4 years becoming a teacher and decided that wasn't for him. ๐ Barry was then called up in 1976 to the Rhodesian Army, at 23 years old, did an advanced medic course, and was transferred to his unit on the Mozambique border and was allocated to a group of three others, High Density Force Operations, flooding areas in 4 man sticks and patrolling from 7 to 14 days, in areas where terrorists walked from 30 to 300. ๐ On leaving the Army, Barry went back to University and became a Hearing and Speech Correctionist, working in that field. Then headed to Australia, working with Austistic children and travelling, learning about Australia and country life. ๐ He left Australia, went to England, worked for a mountain bike company... Went to Israel, started and built from the ground up the British Council English Language Center, with 5 other people. Where Barry started doing Marathons and cycling through the desert on his mountain bike. ๐ Barry left and then went onto to study Psychology, completed a 2 year Masters, and internship. And got into Ultra Marathons. ๐ In 2000 Barry came back to Australia. Started a private practice, and was contracted to work with Veterans. And has been working with Veterans for 20 years. And learning from them. And learnt that there was so much wisdom in the territory of Veterans that wasn't being drawn on in the healing of Veterans. ๐ Barry developed a way of talking to Veterans, that's based on operational territory, supporting them as they're transitioning into different situations in life, empowering them so they have these skill sets. ๐ In the military they say "never leave anyone behind"... Barry helps Veterans not to leave themselves behind. Go back get yourself, bring back the positive qualities and heal the wounds, then combine the positive qualities with the civilian. ๐ We talk about Barry's incredible book: โWhich Way Is Your Warrior Facing- an operational manual for current serving and veterans transitioning into civilian lifeโ. The book invites you to go on a journey to both operationalise your territory, define your map and orientate your compass as you learn to transition into civilian life. And embodies the core lesson that all change requires the ability to become comfortable in the face of discomfort, and help guide you forward as you bridge towards a stronger sense of identity and purpose as well as form a strong connection with those you care about. ๐ Barry and I talk about identity. And feeling stuck in that. "Is your backpack weighing you down?". And discusses settling the shame that Veterans don't like to talk about... so they can feel freedom. ๐ We talk about the challenges Veterans experience when transitioning into civilian life. And how Barry helps Veterans powerfully navigate through that. ๐ Barry shares his insights into the small steps. And the importance of finding and choosing discomfort that's manageable, creating stillness... And gives the example of a Sniper. ๐ And gives amazing examples translating so much of what we discussed into operational language. Including how your body is your weapon and how are you taking care of it. ๐ Earning the respect, listening, understanding and trust of Veterans when supporting them in Post Traumatic Growth. ๐ Why "avoidance" works against thriving. ๐ We discuss depression, grief, despair, feeling defeated, suffering, pain, darkness "the long dark night of the soul"... And moving and stepping out of that. ๐ Living the healing of your body. Have emergency protocols when you're feeling like you're out of control eg... anxiety, panic. Barry shares some techniques and insights into this. ๐ That in the military tribe, you don't have to be alone. The importance of ensuring you have connection and a tribe. ๐ Rediscovering your fire and resilience. And "What's next?"... And how this is so dynamic. ๐ Barry speaks about Open Arms... Veterans and Families Counselling. โค You can connect with Barry here... https://www.barryzworestine.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/barryzworestine Open Arms that Barry speaks about in today's episode: https://www.openarms.gov.au/ Thankyou again, Barry, for your incredible work and for taking the time to share with us on today's episode. Marnie and I met on LinkedIn and had an incredible conversation about the challenges that Men experience during separation. I loved Marnie's approach to supporting men and women throughout separation to achieve the best possible outcomes for their children. And invited Marnie onto the show. Observer of many separations, and as a parent who has gone through separation herself, Marnie understands the emotional toll and stress that comes with separating...and is highly skilled at helping parents navigate separation with courage and confidence so they can come out the other side with the energy and new skills to build a future for themselves and their children. GOLD ON TODAY'S show... ๐ We talk about how people need to be given understanding, that they're simply human, going through a challenging time. ๐ How emotions can impact communication and be misread, when people are feeling afraid and confused about what's ahead of them. The fear can come across from hysteria through to anger and shutting down. ๐ How separation can affect your identity...everything that you thought your future was going to be... is now "gone"... and you're afraid of the unknown. ๐ The importance of preparing well... People cope better emotionally if they know what the process is. Know what's expected of them... what the issues and outcomes are. ๐ Marnie talks about negotiating openly, with honesty, transparency and integrity. Giving a rationale for what they're asking, and communicating with more clarity. ๐ Marnie shares how she spends preparation time with both parties, she's impartial as a mediator. ๐ How couples separating can often want the same thing, but are each coming at it from a different perspective. Especially for their children. Why it's so important to have good communication... and support around feeling the guilt around separating. ๐ We talk about when a man has been the protector, the financial provider for so long, and has built his life around his wife and family...when that is longer there, the struggles he experiences. And when his former partner moves on... and the feeling of being "replaced" by someone else. ๐ We talk about the impact it has on children and fathers staying strong with their connection with their children. Even if their ex is trying to drag the kids into it. ๐ The importance of focusing on what's best for your kids... And setting examples for your children, leading by example, for your sons and daughters... To help break the cycle for the next generation. ๐ The benefits of getting into mediation early. And creating a separation or divorce team. For healthy conversations and for a better future for yourselves and your children. And bringing more peace and joy to your children's life. ๐ Surrounding yourself with friends and people that are supportive of you and that aren't going to fuel your fears with their negativity. ๐ The Resilience that Marnie experiences within herself and in her work as a mediator and also the resilience and courage in her clients... Tony's skills have been featured on TV in several countries and he is a regular radio guest all over the world (even in French!) ๐ We discuss Tony's own personal resilience story and insights both as a Dog Listener, as an entrepreneur in business...And as a comedian. ๐ How Tony got started in Dog Listening in 1999 helping his Mother build and succeed in Dog Listening, through to facing adversity... Along with his book "Think Like A Dog". ๐ Tony shares the fundamentals behind understanding your dog and resolving behaviour issues in a way that actually makes sense to the dog and brings more fun to your and your dog's life. And how it changes people's quality of life and connection with their dogs and shows you how your dog thinks. ๐ How Tony includes human psychology in his Dog Listeners course... Because we often base our identities around our dogs and their behaviour. ๐ We talk about the resilience that's built as a comedian...how it's one of the most extreme art forms.. how Tony got started in comedy and how he combines his ability to help humans to have the best possible relationship with their dogs... and their connection with dogs... into his comedy shows. ๐ Tony speaks about how when you're on a new or different path that... and the impact of self-acceptance and knowing that you're simply starting out... and to just keep going... not to get stuck in other people's perceptions or people pleasing. He shares examples and stories of that from his own life. ๐ The power of becoming more comfortable with rejection and how you can allow that to build resilience and strength. ๐ How Tony's Dad and Mum separating when he was a kid impacted him to step up early as the "man" of the house. And to do everything he could to help protect his Mum and Sister and help them succeed... and the adversity he faced around that in his 30's. ๐ How an incredible story and case study of a dog with the worst separation anxiety that Tony had ever seen, led to him meeting his amazing partner of 12 years "Hayley"! ๐ How letting go of control in business and life, when challenges arise, has led to the most fantastic opportunities for himself and Hayley. ๐ The importance of raising people up, while also taking responsibility for yourself and how you feel, think, and behave. Bob shares how as he's got older he's become more confident...and worries less about things than he did when he was younger. And how adopting that older mindset when you're younger can help ground you. ๐ How challenges in Bob's life have supported his own growth and built upon his resilience. His insights into resilience... including the ability to dust yourself and get back up again... Getting past the "no's"... Re-framing "no's"... And self acceptance and acknowledging that it's ok that the "no's" don't feel so good. Letting that feeling pass through you... So you don't have to fear the "no's". ๐ฅ What "drive by mentor" means... People that come into our lives at the most unexpected times...That we may, or may never, speak to or see again. And how they just happen to say the exact thing we need to hear, and are ready to hear, at that moment. ๐ The "one golden nugget" of advice from a โdrive-by mentorโ that totally shifted Bob's perspective and played a big role in his success... ..."if you want to make a lot of money in sales, don't have making money as your target...Your target is serving others... When you hit that target your reward will come in form of money". ๐ฅ Bob shares that great Salesmanship is about the other person, that you're trying to bring value too. It's about another person's life being better, just because you're a part of it. ๐ We discuss how when you come at sales from scarcity, it feels uncomfortable, because it goes against your core values. ๐ฅ "Giving", focusing on providing value, doesn't mean that you're not "receiving". ๐ฅ Why it's important to study prosperity. ๐ Bob shares The Five Laws of Stratospheric Success...And how it applies to "Giving" and "Receiving".... The Law of Value - Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment. The Law of Compensation - Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them. The Law of Influence - Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other peopleโs interests first. The Law of Authenticity - The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself. The Law of Receptivity - The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving ๐ฅ We discuss that it doesn't matter what your financial situation is, we all have value to provide. ๐ The Golden Rule of Business and Sales..."All things being equal, people will do business with, and refer business to, those people they know, like, and trust." ๐ฅ As a strong Resilient man... Bob shares what resilience means to him... Whether we're men or women, we can learn from others and learn from our own life experiences... In many ways, as amazing human beings, we are much more alike than we are different. ๐ Bob shares how we can implement and apply "The Go-Giver" way... and asking "how do I provide value to this person?" "Is this going to bring value to this person". And that value is subjective and why it's important not to assume that what we would find of value, is what someone else would find of value. And why it's important to pay attention, ask questions, listen... so we can add value. And touch the lives of others. ๐ฅ Bob shares his insights into "authenticity" and acting congruently with your values. Mandy Gibbons Podcast Show... ๐๐ฅ GUEST: Mike Dyson of Good Blokes Co
Mike is the Founder of Good Blokes Co. Since 2015, Mike Dyson has lead tens of thousands of conversations with boys and men all over Australia on manhood, mental health, mateship, risk, violence and respect for women. These conversations give him a rare insight into whatโs truly going on behind the mask of masculinity and a unique perspective on how our culture of masculinity shapes our men and boyโs wellbeing and behaviour. Mike is the lead facilitator on Good Blokes Co camps and retreats. In the education sphere, he trains teachers to design and facilitate their own programs to engage boys in meaningful reflection and conversation. His corporate presentations inspire leaders to carry the conversation on healthy masculinity forward in the workplace. JUST SOME OF THE GOLD ๐ฅ IN THIS EPISODE: ๐ Mike talks about the Mother / Son camps and the Father / Son camps and how it transforms the connection and communication between sons and their parents. Example: Sons get to see their parents through different lenses... Their Mum is someone who can have fun What is their Mum really hoping for What's their Dad's ambitions Mum and Dad's struggles ๐ฅ Mike shares how his best mate's wife phoned him saying his best mate had checked himself into hospital and that he was worried about suicide. We talk about the insights it bought Mike around supporting his mate. ๐ How Mike not too long after, found himself in the hospital emergency thinking he was having a heart attack, discovering he was experiencing anxiety. Which led Mike to men's groups, rights of passage work... and the potential of helping young men and kids with the skills to take care of their mates. ๐ฅ How parents, teachers and communities are embracing these conversations and helping kids to connect with adults. How Mike provides, and teaches how to provide, a safe place for these conversations to take place. ๐ We discuss the transformational impact of this on bullying. ๐ฅ How Mike gets to help young men thrive during their teenage years... and into adult hood, through to dating and treating women with respect, and respecting themselves. ๐ฅ Mike shares, in his men's work, how so many other blokes are experiencing similar challenges when it comes to emotional awareness. ๐ We discuss how men, as leaders, can feel the pressure of not only dealing with their own emotions and challenges, but also having others around them coming to them with their adversities... and the overwhelm that brings. ๐ฅ The impact of being able to accept your emotions and simply talking / saying that you're feeling sad (whatever you're feeling)... ...Mike gives an example of when his dog passed away... Being honest and open about it and if it means taking a day off or a week off, to simply ask for it. Versus feeling like you have to push through and pretend it's not happening. ๐ฅ We discuss changing the culture... From men feeling ashamed to say they're struggling - with fear of being black listed or managed out - from having a mental health issue... To having our mates back. To support men when they're struggling. That it doesn't have to mean ending their career. ๐ฅ How it gets to crisis point by not noticing or not getting on top of the stress... And the simple choices that can be implemented to help with that... versus turning to vices. ๐ How the average Aussie Man feels like he needs to be tough, strong, unemotional... Mike shares a study of 67% of Australian men feel the pressure to meet that stereo type. ๐ฅ How those of us, who have the skills around emotional awareness, we can support blokes who find it hard to have those conversations. And have our mates back. ๐ฅ We discuss anger and frustration...Alcohol, vices, making "not so healthy decisions" when you're struggling. ๐ How simply just having a conversation can transform a situation, when a man is going through adversity. ๐ฅ Mike shares how "shame" can often be a man's kryptonite and how it can prevent a man from asking for help. Mike also discusses James Gilligan research which states that the main cause of violence in young men is shame. Eg... I don't feel man enough. ๐ How men are socially isolated. How traumatic feeling alone can be. Mike shares how feeling alone can be as dangerous to your heart (physiologically) as smoking 15 cigarettes per day. ๐ฅ Why it's important to have strong male supportive friendships outside of your relationship, so you're not putting the pressure on your partner. ๐ The impact of connecting regularly whether that be via sms, messenger, quick voice messages, calls, zoom etc if we're not able to connect with mates in person. ๐ฅ Mike talks about the tools he uses to build emotional awareness. ๐ We discuss resilience, taking responsibility, being accountable with our word, self care, self acceptance, embracing challenges and building momentum to empower ourselves and thriving in life. How candidates have specifically applied to companies who stand for and are committed to The Circle Back Initiative. ๐ฅ How The Circle Back Initiative creates a caring culture within the company. ๐ Kmart, Office Works, LinkedIn that have 1000's of employees through to smaller companies that hire 5 employees have committed to this. ๐ฅ How companies often lose customers from the way they've treated job applicants... and how a company treats customers can affect potential applicants not wanting to work for them. ๐ฅ Steve shared that companies, for the most part, don't know what people are going through personally, individually in their lives... it's important to get back to everyone and treat people with respect. ๐ There's 6 standards that need to be met with The Circle Back Initiative. Which drives better practice and far better feedback from employers "in house" recruiters... when reaching out to job applicants. ๐ฅ The amazing companies that have come on board to sponsor The Circle Back Initiative so Steve can make it free for employers to join. ๐ The importance of congruence when it comes to connecting with people for organisations, with anyone that comes onto contact with their brand including employees, candidates, suppliers, customers. YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO THIS... THIS WILL BLOW YOUR MIND! We talk about the affects of alcohol and sleep... The various processes the body utilises sleep to help your brain flush out toxins... And why you're feeling foggy and exhausted. When you hear about WHY this happens...It'll put a whole new spin of respect on sleep for you. The affects of lack of sleep and weight gain... especially if you're exercising regularly. This podcast episode... is going to be-life changing for so many of you. It's a ripper!... You'll pen and paper for this one, for sure. Enjoy! Thankyou again, Dr Nick! ---------- JUST SOME OF THE GOLD ๐ฅ IN THIS EPISODE: ๐ฅ Sleep cleans the brain!... You'll love how this works. This is game changing when it comes to quality of life and health! ๐ Every time we sleep it cleans the brain. We need about 1 hour sleep for every 2 hours awake. You will basically clean all the rubbish you have accrued during the day. ๐ฅ Proteins and plaques that are built up in the brain from lack of sleep...and how it ages the brain. ๐ Dr Nick explains the process in simple fun terms... How the brain uses huge amounts of ATP... And the adverse affects of that when we aren't allowing ourselves to get sufficient sleep. ๐ฅ 17 to 19 hours of sustained wakefulness... if you jump in a car and drive it's equivalent to having a blood alcohol content of .05 ๐ There's a difference between feeling sleepy... and a tired brain. ๐ฅ WATCH THIS IF YOU DRIVE WHEN YOU'RE TIRED... The problem with road safety messages... What to do if you're feeling tired when driving. And how to pull over and rest more effectively. The benefits of that. THIS IS GOLD. The misconception about pulling over for a few minutes and drinking caffeine. What to do so you're brain gets a rest. eg... Have a double shot of caffeine, lay in the back of the car (not at the wheel), and have a 20 minute sleep. Dr Nick explains the reasons behind this. ๐ When you start the day with reduced sleep... with toxins in your brain... because you haven't been able to clean your brain properly because of the lack of sleep... You then need extra sleep to help the brain recover. ๐ฅ How people have microsleeps when you're driving... and you don't even realise it. If you're driving at 100kms per hour that 27.8 metres per second with your eyes closed. ๐ The importance of staying hydrated and having proper breaks when driving. Dr Nick gives an example of one of his own road trips in Tasmania. ๐ฅ Dr Nick shares the Mabbott Method... And how to re-program your body and mind when you feel like you're a "night-owl". ๐ What to do when you suffer from insomnia. THIS IS BRILLIANT! And the 2 x sleep waves. 1st sleep wave is a 5 minute gateway to sleep. If you miss that, then you need to wait for the second one. ๐ฅ Dr Nick shares how the impact of ruminating on a disagreement with your partner / loved one, the mental exhaustion and distraction from that while on the road... is equivalent to texting while driving. And what to do in that situation. ๐ The different stages of sleep... POWERFUL. How to utilise that to help you be more mentally resilient and cheerful the next day. The benefits of serotonin from getting a decent sleep. ๐ฅ How lack of sleep can cause weight gain...causing the body to store more body fat. This is VERY COOL... How even when you're exercising, if you're body is struggling due to long hours and lack of sleep... you can continue to put on bodyfat, versus reducing it. ๐ Teenagers need 9 hours sleep for quality of life and to support mental health...The benefits of sleep for teenage athletes ๐ฅ How alcohol affects sleep and it's different stages... and your body's ability to heal and learn. ๐ The benefits of sleep for entrepreneurs.
