I never felt more proud. So actually, then what do you get from your employees, you get more commitment, you get them coming to work, feeling like hang on a minute, my job now feels really different. I suddenly feel like I'm making a difference to humans and actually, if we boil everything down, that's where you get a good feeling. 014 The Michelangelo Mindset with Dr Mark Goulston
Dr. Mark Goulston, best-selling author, writer, educator and podcaster shares his journey from depression to successful suicide prevention psychologist. As one of the world’s top thought leaders on empathic listening Dr Goulston injects his wisdom into the interview bringing life to his best selling book ‘Just Listen’ leaving gems for healthy relationships along the way. He explains the essence behind filling the ‘The mirror neuron gap’ principle and its place in creating healthy interactions and connections: an essential communication tool. Seeing beyond the façade to the potential in others is the message of the podcast. Some take away words of wisdom Being bright, you can turn nothing into something Being smart, you can turn something into every thing Being wise is knowing what’s important in life and what’s worth fighting for and what’s not. Solution focus beats competition focus. Journaling is lifesaving and brings out the creative side. Recommended Books – Loneliness and procrastination Lament for the Old When I was a doctor it was common practice to avoid the geriatrics floor. The most widely used rationalization was the reminder of our own ultimate demise. But since my colleagues knew not how to celebrate life, I doubted that they truly feared death. I then thought it was because we had been taught to salvage life quantitatively and not qualitatively. And it was obvious that this group was a poor bet. I then took the time to get to know some of these marvelous people, three times my age, who offered a wealth of experience that spanned hundreds of years. What was so obviously missing was someone to share the fullness of the past and to help relieve the loneliness of the future. And maybe someone to give a damn when they died… – Mr. Goulston is a third-year student at Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts. ABOUT DR. MARK GOULSTON Dr. Mark Goulston is one of the worlds top thought leaders on empathic listening with his book, "Just Listen," being translated into 28 languages and becoming the top book on listening in the world. He is the inventor of Surgical Empathy, an approach he used to reach suicidal patients for more than 25 years without any of them dying by suicide and is the co-creator and moderator of the documentary, Stay Alive: An Intimate Conversation about Suicide Prevention. 009 Growing with Emotional Intelligence with Wanda L Scott
Wanda L Scott is a successful emotional intelligence coach. She is also an author and trainer. She shares her life journey with us. Being raised by a wonderful and influential mother, Wanda was inspired to find joy in teaching and training others. Despite difficulties at home as a child, Wanda shows resilience and the ability to use self-awareness and faith to navigate the challenges of home and work life. She says.. 'We tend to be in survival mode, just doing the best that we can, with what we have or doing the best we can for our family, our children, or to do our job. And, you know, for years I excelled in school and my initial career and that took up time away from realising that I needed to heal. In an effort to cope with my job situation, when I started running into the inequities that appeared in the particular field that I worked in, I found that growing my emotional intelligence caused me to have to look to my personal past and start to, (because I'm a woman of faith) seek God, seek the Lord about how that worked for me and what my path was, and it just kind of pushed me to be stronger in my faith, and stronger in the Word of God to kind of have compassion with myself where I was not’ Wanda developed her coaching career based on compassion and emotional intelligence where she develops others in the Empowerment school. Her love for people and developing others is rooted in her Christian faith evident in her mission and vision. 'We don't realise that there are different things that happen in our lives, that can be termed traumatic and when you don't deal with these traumatic experiences, they build up. Then you have these layers of traumatic experiences. When you then come down to get some help, I think I need to heal, you don't know, which layer to start with, or where it came from. I go to God to pick and pinpoint where to start…' Key take away ‘You have to be compassionate with yourself and find those resources that help lead you in a direction to say, ‘I just need to talk to somebody’ or it can even be a group of people who shared traumatic experiences as you did, and sometimes just talking is a great start to pointing you in the right direction to healing. I was not the role model I wanted for my children’. - KEY TAKEAWAY Tina shares 10 steps towards a life full of abundance & joy: Create boundaries, make others respect your boundaries Close the doors on the family might work to avoid toxic conversations The journey toward boundaries is difficulty however important Self- Care is more than ‘painting your nails’. Its more about how I need to take care of myself? How can I be my own parent? What do I need today and tomorrow. Put on your oxygen mask. Quality time with those you love. Rising from the fire of a toxic relationship is difficult - Be compassionate and take baby steps Destruction leads to growth Looking back but not staying back Use effective communication as a tool to ‘take out the fire’! This is a skill that needs to be taught. We make assumption that good communication is a natural behaviour. It needs to be learnt and practiced. Active listening is key. Become emotionally intelligence as a tool for how we navigate social relationship Good Communication + Respect = Trust 'We can all rise no matter how difficult things are right now, there is a rebirth, rise, resurrection'. 002 Simply the Best with Robert Hanna
Simply the Best! with Robert Hanna Robert takes us on an amazing journey through his life story. He shares how being ‘recently listed as a LinkedIn top one 100, Rising Star, and Influence’ and starting a successful recruitment agency for lawyers was inspired by the legacy of his grandfather who ran the ‘largest law firm outside of any major London law firm’ and how his mother, a determined ‘strong willed, independent woman, with a lot of that grit and determination, and resilience’ inspired him on to become a successful entrepreneur and to be the best. Robert shares how he opened doors during the pandemic pivoting from a footsie 250 company into entrepreneurship to become a globally recognised and successful recruitment law firm where he ‘helps lawyers find jobs’. Robert describes himself as loyal. ‘I think loyalty is one of the most important traits, because loyalty and trust is one of the most important things in business. And there's nothing necessarily wrong with that…., everyone wants to get on and have a good career, a good livelihood and do well. But if you can have someone who is genuinely kind-hearted, loyal, devoted to you and trustworthy, that's for me’ An inspiring encouraging & empowering interview. Full of life lessons and drive. Many doors opened. Enjoy the ride! ..’you can see that competitive nature in everything that I do, I have to be the best. I'm quite vocal about that, not in the sense of an arrogance thing, but just in my internal self drive, you know, I want to be the best I can be and always push myself.
