Ep.228: Stopping Envigo, Saving Beagles
The fate of 3,000 beagles bred for experimentation is in doubt as this podcast reaches the public. Envigo, a multi-million dollar supplier of dogs for lab experimentation worldwide, is accused of violations under the Animal Welfare Act after a PETA undercover investigation exposed horrible conditions at Envigo's Virginia facility. The Department of Justice has sought to close down the facility. But Envigo wants to sell off its remaining 3,000 dogs to labs for experimentation first. Daphna Nachminovich, PETA Sr. VP for Animal Cruelty explains why that's unacceptable. She wants animal lovers to join PETA in forcing Envigo to give up all the dogs to safe and caring homes. Ep.227: PETA's Fight for A Modern, Cruelty-Free Approach to Science. ,
The Research Modernization Deal, RMD, is a new deal for scientists and animals developed by the scientists at PETA. Intended to change the paradigm on the use of animals in experimentation, RMD is a common-sense strategy necessitated by the 90 percent failure rate of research involving animals to produce anything of value for humans. PETA's Dr.Emily Trunnell with the Laboratory Investigations Department is working with the team trying to make RMD a reality. She tells Emil Guillermo the program is as simple as stopping everything that doesn't work or produce real results and shifting money and emphasis to non-animal experiments that would have a better chance at success. Ep.226: Peter Singer on his groundbreaking work, "Animal Liberation."
In 1975, philosopher Peter Singer argued for the end of tyranny by human animals over non-human animals. His book "Animal Liberation," has been an ethical compass for several generations of animal rights activists. In this conversation with Emil Guillermo, Singer talks about the changes in the last five decades, how his book helped bring about those changes, and how there's still much work to do to convince society that speciesism is wrong. Stuck In The Middle Of Starbucks: Cromwell Protest Elevates Upcharge Debate
What's up with the upcharge at Starbucks for vegan milk substitutes? If you want soy, almond, or oat milks, you'll pay a premium. For being kind to animals and the planet? Consumers have been complaining to Starbucks for sometime, but the debate gained momentum when Oscar-winning actor and animal activist James Cromwell stepped up and put his hand to a Starbucks counter with a schmear of Super Glue. It showed his commitment to the issue as he read a statement and brought attention to Starbucks' anti-consumer, anti-climate, anti-cow policy. PETA campaign specialist talks with Emil Guillermo about the Cromwell protest, and the importance of fighting the upcharge. Go to for more. Ep.221: PETA Uncovers Monkey Transport Scandal, Threat To U.S. Public Health
When laboratories transport monkeys into the U.S. and throughout the country, every movement must be documented by a veterinary inspection. PETA found it's not being done in dozens of cases involving nearly 2,000 monkeys. These illegal shipments represent a public health risk as monkeys can pass such diseases as tuberculosis, West Nile virus, and Herpes B to humans. Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, PETA scientist, talks to Emil Guillermo about how PETA is asking the USDA to suspend and fine research facilities for failure to comply with the Animal Welfare Act. Dr. Jones-Engel talks about how awareness was raised after a van carrying monkeys crashed in Danville, Pennsylvania in January this year. And she says how this wouldn't be an issue if researchers simply stopped wasteful, useless and cruel experimentation on animals. Ep. 220: PETA Investigation Nets Five New Laws to Protect Animals Bred for Experimentation
It's no small thing to bring together a divided government in Virginia and get them to unanimously pass five new laws to save dogs bred for experimentation. But that's what happened after a PETA undercover investigation exposed cruelty at Envigo in Virginia, a 5,000 dog breeding farm that was more like a prison. PETA documented deplorable conditions at Envigo including finding more than 360 dead dogs on the premises. But when the feds wouldn't take action, PETA went to Virginia's state legislators. Normally gridlocked and divided, the legislature, at PETA's urging, came together to fight animal cruelty. PETA Sr. VP Daphna Nachminovich talks to Emil Guillermo about how the investigation sparked passage of new laws holding Envigo accountable. Ep.219: Seeing the Light: Animal Experimenters' Change of Conscience and Heart.
PETA's documentary, "Test Subjects" is winning hearts and minds on the film festival circuit. The film depicts three scientists who found the moral courage to leave vivisection behind and cross over to fight for the animals. After premiering at the famed Raindance Film Festival in England, it has been nominated for best documentary short at the Lancaster International Film Festival. In honor of that, we reprise an episode on one of the scientists featured in the documentary, Dr. Frances Cheng. In conversation with Emil Guillermo, Cheng talks about how she came from Taiwan to the U.S. to become a scientist. As a graduate student, she did a test on saturated fats on rats and learned that the physiology of rats and humans are so different that too often it renders animal tests useless. It's the reason 95 percent of drugs tested on rats fail in human trials. Cheng talks about how that fact began a new emotional journey for her as a scientist. She now regrets having experimented on animals but is haunted by her past actions and can't talk about it without feeling the pain of her test subjects. Cheng now works for PETA and is proud to say she has now saved more animals than she tortured and killed as a researcher. LVMH denies any wrong-doing, but the video shows how snakes are denied a decent life and left sometimes for months in a bag to suffer. Ep.216: Into Ukraine: PETA's Animal Rescue Team Saves Hundreds of Animals
It only took days after the Russians invaded Ukraine for PETA-Germany to organize an Animal Rescue team to swing into action. The mission? To quickly and safely enter Ukraine to save animals left behind in shelters, abandoned homes, and even train stations. And to feed as many starving animals as they could. PETA Germany's Daniel Cox has now returned from Ukraine to update the efforts and the growing number of animals saved. The heartbreaking fact is that for as many animals as the team is able to save, so many more are left behind. Cox talks to Emil Guillermo about what the teams saw, and how they created a pathway for animals from other parts of the country to get to the western city of Lviv, where the team picks up the animals for a trip to the border and beyond. Cox says the effort will continue for as long as it can, feeding and saving as many animals and their companions as they can. Find out how you can help. Ep.215: Mushed Once, Never Again: A PETA Activist's Fight to End the Iditarod
At one point in life, Jonathan Horn mushed. J.J. tried dogsledding just once, but it let J.J. know firsthand the cruelty of the activity. J.J. saw what it did to the lead dog, Bianca. Horn, now a PETA campaigner, talks about how J.J. uses Bianca's memory to fight for the end of the grand symbol of dogsledding, the Iditarod. Horn was just coming back from Alaska and on the way to another PETA demonstration when J.J. took some time at an airport to talk with Emil Guillermo about the just-completed 50th Iditarod. It's still a cruel enterprise that has no real purpose but to subject hundreds of dogs to real suffering. Note: While the race winner was named, the race continues until the last participant finishes. The number of dogs injured or pulled from the race will likely be higher than first reported. Animals--abandoned by private individuals who have fled their invaded country--are on the streets of Ukraine. PETA Germany has gone to the border of Ukraine and Poland to help people and their animals there. Less than a week after the Russian invasion began, more than 800,000 Ukranians have fled the country to seek safety. Some have brought their animals. But many did not. Now PETA Germany volunteers are going into Ukraine to save as many animals as they can, and bring them to safety. PETA is also giving out 40,000 pounds of dog food to make sure hungry animals can be fed. Ep.211: Elon Musk's Monkey Problem
Monkeys used in brain chip experiments by Musk-owned Neuralink were so badly abused they had to be put to death, according to documents obtained by the Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). This is the best chance to find out more about the experiments since Neuralink has moved from UC Davis to a private facility to avoid transparency and accountabililty. Jeremy Beckham, a researcher with PCRM, talks with Emil Guillermo about how the brain chip idea is an old idea spun with a new fantasy, and how all of it is still relying on monkeys subjected to abusive and inhumane treatment.
