It might be to begin a conference, open a board meeting, before introducing a main speaker, at the start of a big meeting, and more. However, so many people completely blow the point of a devotion that I wanted to share these reminders of how to make it memorable. How to make your speech memorable: 1. Start with scripture. Focus their mind on God. 2. Don’t preach. Make it conversational. Share from your heart. 3. Open with a personal story to build a stronger connection with your audience - but keep it short. 4. This is not your chance to pitch your project or brilliant ideas! The devotional time isn’t about you, it’s about focusing the audience on God or the conference theme. 5. Respect the schedule. Keep to your given time frame. Practice with the clock! You may not be the keynote or main speaker, but being asked to give a short devotional is an honor. Do it well and people will remember you for the rest of their lives. And don’t forget a “byline” – which is essentially a one-sentence description of you. 5) A short, well-written introduction: You can’t always depend on a conference host or MC to write a good introduction for you, so don’t take chances. 6) Your online and social media links: Conferences often publish your social media and website links in the program or put them on the video screen while you speak. Don’t wait until you get asked to speak to prepare these items! It may take a while to pull all of this together, so do it now, and you’ll always be ready. Don’t overthink it. Don’t get obsessed thinking about what you could have done better. 2. Don’t take it personally. It’s easier said than done, but learn to separate criticism of the project from criticism of you. 3. Find objective advice. Find another experienced person that you trust and run the project by them for a second opinion. 4. Ask for constructive criticism. At the moment of failure or rejection, keep a cool head and ask for constructive criticism. 5. Don’t let failures derail your dream. It happens! Keep moving forward. Don’t be afraid to fail, especially if you’re expanding your tent poles. If you’re breaking new ground or trying new things – that’s not the time to be timid! Here’s five tips to help you get invited to speak: 1. Volunteer at conferences. Find the conferences you think you might like to speak at in the future and show up to help. You never know what could happen. 2. Become an expert. Find a niche in your field and become an expert. What have you done in your career that is unique? 3. Plan ahead. Most conferences are planned out a year in advance. Don’t wait until the last minute to reach out. (And always be ready for last-minute changes!) 4. You don’t need an agent. Don’t feel like you need an agent to get invitations. They may be able to negotiate a deal but may not be the one to get you the job as a speaker. 5. Take the time to become a great speaker. Being an expert does not necessarily mean you’ll be a great speaker. If you’re incorporating software like Powerpoint or Keynote, learn to speak well first; then bring the Powerpoint into it. Become an amazing speaker! Incorporating these active listening skills into your communication strategy can help you become the kind of person people are drawn to. It’s the best way to get your ideas heard. 1. Learn to speak in shorter chunks. Then stop and let the other person respond! Don’t dominate the conversation. Stick to the topic. Keep it short, keep it relevant. Almost always, less is more. 2. Don’t dominate the conversation. Conversation is a two-way street. 3. Don’t lecture. Nobody wants to be lectured to! 4. Ask about them. People want to share about themselves! Use people’s names and take opportunities to express interest in their lives when it’s appropriate to establish a rapport. 5. Learn to read other people. Be aware of the response or reaction of the others in the room and change your strategy if the moment calls for it. Active listening and good people skills are just as important—if not more—than the skills it takes to do your job. What’s on people’s minds? It’s about being current, relevant, and understanding the zeitgeist. Whoever understand the viewer best wins! Here’s Sean’s Perfect Video Recipe: · The Big Idea: The topic, title, thumbnail Topic: Choose the right topic at the right time. What’s on people’s minds? What are they searching for? Title: What is your video actually about? For example, what is your sermon series on Elijah about? Courage? God’s provision? Title your video to answer the questions people are asking on YouTube. · The Hook The opening few seconds (or first few minutes) of your video should hook the viewer. Create curiosity or tension, tease what’s coming up, build credibility and get the audience bought in to watch more. · The Content Be brief. Be bright. Be fun. Be done. · The Transition Rather than letting the viewer know the video is ending, transition to another video. Agitate the next problem, provoke interest in the next thing, point them to more content on your channel. “If we commit to continuous learning, we’ll definitely be able to create an edge in publishing video and media.” —Sean Cannell *As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
