Season 2 episode 5: Is Kamala Harris Black? How do you feel about Pap Tests being removed as a primary screening tool for cervical cancer? Would you donate you uterus to another woman? Hey yall. Happy Sunday. I hope you all are getting a great start to your week. In today's episode, I talk about maintaining mental clarity by listening to my body and having a good self-care regime. This weekend my self-care consisted of a high-intensity workout, mediation, and quality time with my tiny human. We know that we are still in the midst of a pandemic, so if you are looking for some an opportunity to exercise or create balance through yoga or meditation, check out the people/pages below. I won't go into a lot of detail but I'll just say I'll be glad when Black women can show up in the world as we choose. To hear some of the things that have been said about Kamala Harris since the debate is extremely frustrating and annoying frankly. Seems like Black women's actions are always being picked apart. Will it ever end? I also talked about how there are plans to remove Pap Tests as a primary screening tool for eradicating cervical cancer. That's a scary thought. The Pap Test has been an effective tool used to screen for cervical cancer over the last 50 years. It's baffling to me that is even a consideration. The rationale is that HPV tests are more sensitive and thus a more effective screening tool for cervical cancer care. While I am a believer in science and research, as someone who has screened GYN specimens for abnormal lesions myself, I can say with certainty that every woman is different and this one size fits all approach will be of detriment to women. Although Pap tests are designed specifically to detect cervical cancer, we are able to see cell changes associated with Herpes infections, hormonal changes, cancerous lesions of the endometrium, and many other things. To take away the Pap Tests means that these conditions might go undetected and untreated. Do yall know they have started doing uterus transplants? I don't know what to say about it. Season 1 Episode 14: Dr. Kirsten McKnight-The Eyes are the windows to the body. Happy Season One Finale! Episode 14 marks the season finale of the Super Cyto Girl Podcast. I have learned so much thus far. So many things I can't wait to incorporate for season two! In today's episode, I gave some brief thoughts about my feelings about the #GeorgeFloyd murder. It's been a rough week for so many. So many people are hurting. I am wrapping each of you in my virtual hugs and prayers. On another note, I do have some GREAT personal news...I'm moving! In this episode, I also talk about a holiday that was celebrated last week on May 28th-World Menstruation Hygiene Day. Last but not least, I interviewed Dr. Kirsten McKnight, Optometric Physician and Clinic Manager at Church Health in Memphis, TN. I invited her on to talk about Healthy Vision Month. We chatted about how disease processes show up in the eyes and how this should obviously highlight the need to get regular eye exams. We talked about how important it is to take care of the body overall to prevent systemic issues that show up in the eye. My favorite part of the episode is a quote by Dr. McKnight. "My biggest wish for Healthy Vision Month is that people prioritize their systemic health and then follow up with well vision exams." This has been a great season. Season 1 Episode 11: Robbie Green- The Working Mom's Coach First off, mindset shift...” it’s a privilege to be somebody’s mama.” A privilege. I will always remember that quote. I learned so much from the Working Mom’s Coach. Wow. SO much. Positive psychology is one of the things she introduced me too. I had never heard the term. The definition of positive psychology-the scientific study of what makes life worth living. Focusing on the positive. Instead of complaining about certain aspects of mommyhood, we should pivot to choosing happiness. Heavy. I love how Mrs. Robbie saw the need working moms have based on what she saw around her and through her own experiences. She created this coaching program to coach moms through the difficult times we have. I love how she said she gained some of the knowledge she has through education but she knew she wanted to use that knowledge, not to move up the corporate ladder herself, but to coach other working moms to achieve that goal. The Working Mom’s Coach helps her clients achieve the M.O.R.E. Factor M – Manage Mom Guilt O – Overcome being Overwhelmed R – Reassure them of their relevance, and go from E – Exhausted to Excited about life! I was glad she pointed out she helps moms in multiple aspects. She mentioned she coaches clients in relationship goals, financially, and spiritually, just to name a few. And I love how she said she starts her coaching calls with gratefulness. Yes, I'm just so full y’all. She offers 3 and 6-month coaching programs but with the current state of the world, she is offering a 4-week condensed option as well. She IS accepting new clients. Episode 6: COVID 19, Hormones, Sexual Assault Awareness month, Stress Awareness Happy April Everyone! Thank you for stopping by the show this week. The world is so crazy right now! I admit in the beginning of all this madness with COVID 19, I was not worried. It seemed at the time the virus was contained to certain areas of the world. Slowly but surely, the numbers keep creeping up. I wish this wasn't happening. I wish we could contain it better. I'm concerned BUT still optimistic. This is hitting everyone-HARD. Everyone. My hope is that we are able to come together and flatten the line of individuals getting sick. I hope the economy doesn't suffer too badly. On a lighter note, I am trying out some new music for the podcast. I will be debuting a few beats made my Kenji Wells. Kenji is a devoted track coach and music maker. He is also undefeated in any beat battle competition he has ever entered. Check out his featured music in the next few weeks. We will pick the winning tune together. Check him out-Kenji Wells on Facebook. I am finishing up the discussion we started last week on hormones of the female reproductive tract. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The topic of sexual assault is so heavy. It's so hard for me to understand how we exist in a sex rich culture but we don't want to talk about the bad that comes along with sex-one of which being sexual assault. I shared a few thoughts about my own experience. It's sad that we live in a society where there is always backlash towards the victim. I wish there had been a different decision made concerning my case but sometimes in life bad things happen. I will not let that moment define me. If anyone has been a victim of sexual assault, The Me Too Movement has an awesome website with tons of amazing resources including a glossary. The website is metoomvmt.org; April is also Stress Awareness Month. I know we are living in a time that it is difficult not to stress. All the uncertainty can definitely be a distraction, but I urge you to commit to things that will keep your stress low. Self-care is a must.
