What Is DeQuervain's Syndrome?
Mothers and fathers get this thumb injury from picking up their babies... Gamers from their controllers... Cell phone users from too much texting – And let's not forget percussionists, golfers and anglers! You might think it's just a SIMPLE case of Tendonitis but it's actually a slightly more complicated tendon syndrome known as a 'Tenosynovitis.' In the case of DeQuervain's, one that involves two thumb tendons and the special wrappers called 'Synovial Sheaths' around them where they cross the wrist. TENO refers to the tendon – (Tendons are the "ropes" which connect muscles to bones) SYNOV refers to the Synovial Sheaths – (which are special protective tendon sleeves) and ITIS had to do with irritation, inflammation and pain – (although inflammation is not the primary issue and is often wrongly and unfairly blamed!) Test yourself for it easily – If you have thumb pain but aren’t sure if it's actually De Quervain's Syndrome, try these three simple tests: And for the full article, visit: Follow me here for more podcast episodes or on your favorite platform: Apple: Spotify: Pandora: Google Podcasts: And to get all my latest of everything, including posts, podcasts and videos, follow on your favorite social media: Facebook: YouTube: LinkedIn: Twitter: Pinterest:

Antibiotics And Tendon Damage

Antibiotics And Tendon Damage
Is there a link between certain antibiotics (and other drugs) and tendon disorders like Tennis Elbow, Golfer’s Elbow, Rotator Cuff injuries (and other tendon issues) – Or even tendon ruptures? Yes, there’s a class of antibiotics called ‘Fluoroquinolones’ that have been know for decades to cause various forms of tendon damage – (Cipro being the most well-known and commonly prescribed.) “As of July 2008, the FDA mandated that all FQ products have a black-box warning indicating an increased risk in adverse events including tendon rupture.” In this episode, Allen Willette, from Tennis Elbow Classroom goes into detail about these antibiotic-induced tendon injuries, including: Which specific antibiotics have a risk of tendon damage The other serious side effects that these drugs can cause How these drugs can damage your tendons (and even joints) How these injuries differ from "typical" tendon injuries And thoughts on how one might recover from these injuries And for the full article, visit: Follow me here for more podcast episodes or on your favorite platform: Apple: Stitcher: TuneIn: Google Podcasts: And to get all my latest of everything, including posts, podcasts and videos, follow on your favorite social media: Facebook: YouTube: LinkedIn: Twitter: Pinterest:

When Do You Need An MRI For Tennis Or Golfers Elbow?
11/21/2020
When Do You Need An MRI For Tennis Or Golfers Elbow?
When should you consider getting an MRI if you have a Golfer’s or Tennis Elbow injury? Allen Willette from Tennis Elbow Classroom answers this question in this podcast episode. Which also covers several key, related questions including: Do I need an MRI to diagnose my Tennis or Golfer's Elbow? When is the right time to get an MRI scan – If at all!? What will the MRI tell me... what do the results actually mean? And are there any good alternatives? Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI for short) is considered the “gold standard” when it comes to imaging or “seeing” what’s wrong with soft tissues. If there are any significant defects in your tendons the MRI will reveal these in the greatest detail now medically available. This is the best objective measure (although not the only measure) you can get of how severe the damage to your tendons may be… (Tendon damage being the essence of what Golfer’s and Tennis Elbow are.) But there are several things to take into consideration about if and when you really need to go to the significant trouble involved in getting an MRI Here's where you can go to read the accompanying article, with links to articles referenced in the episode: Follow me here for more podcast episodes or on your favorite platform: Apple: Stitcher: Player.fm: TuneIn: Google Play: Google Podcasts: And to get all my latest of everything, including posts, podcasts and videos, follow on your favorite social media: Facebook: YouTube: LinkedIn: Twitter: Pinterest:

Whether you developed an injury swimming and think of it as “Swimmer's Elbow”… OR you developed a Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow injury some other way – but happen to love to swim… I'm guessing there are probably two or three key questions on your mind: First off: Is swimming bad for Tennis or Golfer's Elbow? – Does it cause or aggravate it? Secondly: Could swimming possibly be a good rehab exercise for your Tennis or Golfer's Elbow? – (Especially if swimming wasn't what caused it in the first place) And, lastly: Should you STOP swimming until your injury heals? – (Especially if swimming IS what caused your injury in the first place) So, let's dig right into the question of whether swimming causes or aggravates Tennis Elbow... Do Topical Tennis Elbow Treatments Rub You The Right Way?

Do Topical Tennis Elbow Treatments Rub You The Right Way?
Do Lotions, Creams And Sprays Help Your Tennis Elbow Heal? Lotions, sprays and medicated gels are often used to relieve the pain of Tennis and Golfer's Elbow... But can these topical remedies actually help your injured tendons heal – or are they more likely to just rub you the wrong way? This is Allen Willette with another episode of the Tennis Elbow Classroom podcast… And I certainly get it that when your Golfer's or Tennis Elbow is screaming bloody murder... And you can barely lift your coffee mug without stabbing pain in your elbow, (much less your tennis racket, golf clubs or leaf blower)... You may desperately need some relief, so you buy some cream, spray or gel and rub it in… Presto! Instant relief! Great idea, right? Well, maybe, maybe not! At best, you may get some temporary relief from your symptoms with little or no downside… But, here's the thing… although you could reasonably expect a cream or salve to help protect your skin as it heals from a cut or abrasion... You can't realistically expect something you put on your skin to help your Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow injury heal faster… Okay, so, why not? The 3 Key Principles Of Tennis Elbow Rehab Exercise
Are you looking for which exercises to do when you have Tennis Elbow – And which exercises are best? You're in the right place – But let me ask you this, first: Are you sure it's the right time to begin those exercises? Because, I have to tell you, there IS a right time and a wrong time to begin your Tennis Elbow rehab exercises! And I'd to help you avoid the common mistake of starting them at the wrong time – Or in the wrong order, because it can make a huge difference to your healing and recovery! So, let's talk about three key principles – that you won't likely hear anywhere else: Why Tennis Elbow Rehab Exercises are NOT the top priority – in the beginning of your healing process, How and why starting those Exercises right away often aggravates the injury, WHAT the BEST Exercise to begin your Tennis Elbow rehab IS (when it is time to start) (And why that exercise is NOT actually Wrist Extension) So, put down those weights, bands or rubber bars for a minute – and let's reconsider this thing. Because after 15 years of experience in treating Tennis Elbow and coaching people online, I've seen WAY too many people get these 3 things wrong… (along with all the other treatment mistakes, like taking pills, icing, wearing a brace and getting Cortisone Shots) Here's the link to the full article if you'd like to read along: And while you're there, get my free video course: Follow me here for more podcast episodes or on your favorite platform: iTunes: Stitcher: Player.fm: TuneIn: Google Play: And to get all my latest of everything, including posts, podcasts and videos, follow on your favorite social media: Facebook: G+ Page: YouTube: Twitter: Pinterest:

Is Acupuncture Effective For Treating Tennis Elbow?
Is Acupuncture an effective treatment when it comes to encouraging the healing process of Tennis Elbow?... Or is it simply a way to temporarily relieve some of the pain and other symptoms of Tennis and Golfer's Elbow? Allen Willette tackles this question in this episode of the Tennis Elbow Classroom podcast. There does seem to be evidence that Acupuncture can reduce the pain of Tennis Elbow... Acupuncture can generally alleviate many kinds of pain, after all. And, in that sense, it's certainly a much safer, healthier choice than anti-inflammatory pills and Cortisone shots... Tennis Elbow Supplements: Helpful For Healing Or Waste Of Money?
Are there any supplements, including vitamins or herbal remedies for Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow that will help relieve your pain and support your healing process or are they a complete waste of time and money? It's a question I'm often asked by my members in the forum – and in my practice treating Tennis Elbow sufferers directly. Many people want to avoid toxic anti-inflammatory pills – for very good reasons, and they're looking for natural alternatives for both pain relief AND to support their healing process. The problem is that desperate Tennis and Golfer's Elbow sufferers tend to get a little carried away seeking remedy… And there's no shortage of claims on the Internet (some bordering on the miraculous) about all kinds of vitamins, supplements or herbal concoctions – including: Basic Vitamins: A, B, C and D “Anti-Inflammatory” Herbs: Ginger, Turmeric, Bromelain MSM, Chondrotin and Glucosamine Fish Oil / Veg-based Omega-3 Oils And Collagen Supplements Sadly, the short answer is that most of these things, beyond basic vitamins, are pointless and a waste of money, for various reasons we explore in this episode... (At least when it comes to healing tendon injuries like Tennis Elbow and Golfer's Elbow. Not necessarily for other problems.) REFERENCE – Quoted in the video: “Vitamin D plays a significant role in the tendon-to-bone healing process by increasing the bone mineral density and strengthening the skeletal muscles.” This study has to do with the Rotator Cuff tendons of the shoulder, and how they need to heal and form strong attachments to the bone after surgery… But the same principle may apply to Tennis or Golfer's Elbow, because we're dealing with a similar 'tendon attachment' at our elbows. Discover why advanced Massage Therapy techniques are the best way to treat your own Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow injury. Learn about the most powerful self-massage methods to use from a professional Neuromuscular Therapist, who treats these injuries every day. Here's a quote from the episode: I truly believe Advanced Massage Therapy Techniques are the “Missing Link” when it comes to treating the true, underlying causes of Tennis Elbow… And reversing that stubborn, vicious injury cycle that few things can touch. (Literally, few things TOUCH at ALL, except, possibly in the most superficial way.) Because nothing else physically “get's into” the muscle and tendon “issues in the tissues,” at the root of the injury better... Nothing else releases the tension and restrictions in your muscles and stimulates tendon healing like the right Massage Therapy methods can... How Is Lateral Epicondylitis Treated In Physical Therapy?

How Is Lateral Epicondylitis Treated In Physical Therapy?
If you have Tennis Elbow and go to see your Doctor for diagnosis and treatment, it's very likely that you'll be given a prescription for Physical Therapy treatments. But, the question is: How likely are those treatment to help you fully recover? (Or to at least to put you well on your way to healing and recovery in a reasonable period of time.) And what if you've already been through a series of visits and it didn't help you – What do you do NOW? There's no doubt that Physical or 'Physiotherapy' treatments help some Tennis and Golfer's Elbow sufferers recover… However, in my experience, working directly with hundreds of Golfer's and Tennis Elbow sufferers for about 15 years… And from what I've gathered from talking with my Tennis Elbow Classroom program members, Physical Therapy also seems to let a lot of people down... And in many cases, that's after dozens of visits, MONTHS of hard work and precious wasted time and energy – that's gone forever. NOT to disparage hard-working and well-meaning Physical Therapists. Tennis Elbow is a stubborn, difficult to treat injury – and my skepticism and criticism has to do with the overall Medical System and how it looks at and treats these kinds of injuries. And since Physical Therapy is under the umbrella of the Allopathic Medicine and its symptom-obsessed Model, there's quite a lot to criticize. Including how that system, in a way, ties the hands of its practitioners. So, let's begin with a look at HOW Tennis Elbow is typically treated… This podcast episode covers: How is Tennis Elbow / Lateral Epicondylitis typically treated in Physical Therapy? What are the techniques or 'Modalities' often used? Is anything missing from this typical treatment protocol? And are there Tennis Elbow rehab exercises you can do at home? The Muscular Causes Of Tennis And Golfer's Elbow - Tennis Elbow 101
What causes Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow? What's the insidious process by which repetitive motions, (whether related to work, tennis, golf or gardening) end up injuring you and causing you so much pain? In this episode we talk about the central role muscles play in causing the injury. (It's no small part!) First of all, Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow are muscle AND tendon injuries… And although the tendon is where the most serious part of the injury is – (And what essentially defines the injury) let's make sure we understand what the difference is between a muscle and a tendon. Why does that matter? Because, although muscles and tendons are two parts of the same unit, they are made of different materials – and they have difference purposes. Another big difference between them is that they heal at different rates. Tendons, unfortunately, heal much more slowly than muscles... Why Is Tennis Elbow So Challenging? - Tennis Elbow 101
Tendon injuries like Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow are notorious for not healing easily or well – But why is that the case? Why are they often so stubborn and challenging to recover from? (This is the big picture view, which we'll build on in later episodes – Honestly, I think I'm a little long-winded in this one!) The Tennis Elbow Classroom Treatment Strategy
09/22/2016
The Tennis Elbow Classroom Treatment Strategy
Do you have a Tennis Elbow treatment plan? A consistent strategy based on how to – And just as importantly – How NOT to treat it? Here's one based on straight-forward principles of healing and my decade-plus experience successfully treating Golfer's and Tennis Elbow sufferers. Unfortunately, the typical Tennis Elbow treatment protocol tends to be overly focused on alleviating symptoms – Not on healing. (And we always have to remember they are not the same thing – Sometimes they are mutually exclusive.) If you completely heal your injury there should be no more pain – but there are a lot of things you can do to relieve pain (by suppressing it, usually) that have no positive effect on healing your injury, and which, can impede healing – or even worsen your injury. So, it’s not surprising that so many Tennis and Golfer's Elbow sufferers find themselves scrambling from treatment to treatment and from cure to so-called “cure” – without a real strategy or a deeper understanding of the injury, in desperate search of relief… This is especially true in the beginning – Before you understand how serious your Tennis Elbow injury really is… Before you realize it's not going to just get better permanently with a little rest, a few pills and some ice… And before you suddenly get it!... You're trapped in a terrible, vicious cycle! So if you need a plan for escaping that vicious cycle – What I call, “The Tennis Elbow Triple Trap” this podcast episode is for you. Selfie Elbow: A Painful, New Injury? (Yes And No)

Selfie Elbow: A Painful, New Injury? (Yes And No)
Is your arm or elbow starting to hurt from taking large numbers of selfies? You may have the latest Tech Injury, many have begun to call "Selfie Elbow." (Selfie Elbow is pain in the elbow caused by holding ones arm fully extended and putting one's wrist in an awkward position to snap pictures of oneself over and over – AKA taking “selfie” pics.) This podcast episode still applies, though, whether you're starting to feel pain in your elbow, wrist or fingers – And whether it's related to typing, texting OR selfie taking using your computer, tablet OR smartphone. Because it appears that Selfie Elbow is just another, newer form of Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow, and not truly a unique, new medical condition. (Lateral Epicondylitis or Medial Epicondylitis, or better yet, Epicondylosis or Epicondylopathy) The same principles apply to this “new” Overuse Injury as with other Repetitive Strain Injuries. Platelet Rich Plasma For Treating Tennis Elbow
09/01/2016
Platelet Rich Plasma For Treating Tennis Elbow
In this podcast Allen Willette from Tennis Elbow Classroom discusses the pros and cons of Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy in the treatment of Golfer's and Tennis Elbow. Including: Whether there's any evidence PRP is an effective treatment, (based on medical studies) Whether it's worth the price – and the pain afterward (also sometimes during the procedure) And whether there are any better alternatives (other approaches to achieving the same goals.) What is Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy? PRP (and its less-sophisticated relative, Autologous Blood Injection) are in-office, minimally-invasive “non-surgical” procedures that begin by having a small amount of your blood drawn. In the PRP procedure your blood is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, by separating them from your red blood cells and your plasma, which is mostly water and Electrolytes. Then your platelets (along with some of your plasma) is injected into the injured area that's not healing (usually a tendon or ligament.) Platelets are cells in your blood that are mostly responsible for blood clotting, and they also secrete growth factors that are involved in tissue healing. (The procedure with ABI is the same, except they skip the spinning and separating step, and simply inject you with the whole blood.)
