Ep. 139 - Skip's Quips: The Worst Christmas Gift I Ever Recieved
The Worst Christmas Gift I Ever Received Welcome, wisdom-seekers to Skip’s Quips - a Holiday Special Edition! This week on The Main Thing Podcast, we’re doing something a little different — and a little more intimate. No guest. No interview. Just you and me, gathered around a story that has stayed with me for nearly half a century. And it couldn’t be landing at a better time. Today is a week before Christmas, and most of us are feeling the familiar holiday squeeze — the pressure to get it right, to pick the perfect gifts, to keep all the moving parts moving. Before the wrapping paper flies and the chaos peaks, let’s pause to unwrap a story that surprised me… and eventually shaped me. This is the tale of the worst Christmas gift I ever received — and the unexpected wisdom it carried. About This Special Episode In this short Christmas reflection, I take you back to 1976, when ten-year-old Skip unwrapped a gift that left him confused, disappointed, and wondering what he had done wrong. But what I didn’t know then — and what I can see so clearly now — is that the quiet gifts we don’t understand often become the ones that shape our character the most deeply. This story is a reminder that: Some gifts grow on us slowly Love sometimes looks like preparation And the smallest objects can carry the largest lessons It’s my Christmas gift to you today — a little wisdom wrapped in memory, gratitude, and hindsight. Where’s the Special Guest and What’s a “Skip’s Quip?" We are doing something a little different. I’ll be sharing a wisdom lesson with you—but there won’t be a guest. Just me, sharing wisdom. A short wisdom lesson of less than 10 minutes total. We plan to do these about 6 times a year. We’re calling these special editions - “Skip’s Quips.” Don’t worry, we will still bring you wisdom conversations with our special guests twice a month. Additionally, you will receive “Skip’s Quips” to supplement to our regular wisdom programming. Let us know what you think, and please share your feedback. You can do that via . This special “Skip’s Quip” will help you: Reset your heart six days before Christmas See gift-giving through a new, deeper lens Remember the shaping power of work, responsibility, and small tasks For More Information About Skip Lineberg Please visit our . Ep. 135 - Conversations with My Mentor John (Pt. Four): The Courage to Change

Ep. 135 - Conversations with My Mentor John (Pt. Four): The Courage to Change
Welcome to a very special wisdom mini-series. This four-part project originates from an archive of rare 2004 recordings of wisdom conversations with my mentor, John Wells Jr. In the truest sense this batch of wisdom has been two decades in the making. Sadly, John passed away in early February 2005, after battling cancer. Those conversations and recordings served as a pre-cursor, perhaps even a prequel to this podcast which launched 15 years later in 2019. The Courage to Change Part Four features what was, perhaps, John’s favorite story to tell, his favorite wisdom lesson. It showcases John’s humility and his lifelong commitment to learning. John Wells Jr never stopped striving to better himself, to improve. That passion fueled his physical fitness, as you heard in Part One, as well as his business acumen, as you’ll hear in this episode. I think this lesson was his favorite because something he was initially opposed to doing, surprised him with such a positive outcome and impact. You see, to John, learning something was more important and more valuable than simply being right about something. As you listen today, you will get a feel for the Well Home Furnishings flagship store, as well as their innovative approach to business and leadership. The wisdom lesson you get in this episode is straightforward and immediately applicable. It provides a powerful illustration of the values of humility and adaptability in business success. It also delivers a strong reminder of the need to be open to—and ready for—change. Let’s face it, that’s not always easy. More About Our Wise Guest - John Wells, Jr. John was one of the most effective and influential mentors in my lifetime. He taught, led and influenced me, opening my eyes and expanding my thinking on those things that truly matter. I was deeply blessed to know him. John was a dedicated retail veteran and community leader who co-founded Wells Home Furnishings. Known for his entrepreneurial spirit, he led his business to award-winning success. Beyond his career, Wells was deeply involved in civic and youth service organizations in Charleston, including the Boys Scouts, YMCA and United Way, among others, reflecting his commitment to community betterment. In 2000, John was honored with the prestigious Ernst Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Though he never sought the spotlight, one day the President of the United States, George W. Bush, stood in Charleston and honored John Wells for his service. His legacy is marked by his dedication to his family, his profession and his community, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. Ep. 131 - Marine Cmdr. Jake Harriman Shares Unifying Wisdom
From Combat Zones to Community Hubs: Jake Harriman's Journey of Servant Leadership I first heard about Jake Harriman by way of his guest appearance on The Jocko Willink Podcast. Immediately I was drawn to his mission, heart and bias for action. Jake Harriman is a former US Marine Commander who spent more than a decade abroad defending our nation from enemies, terrorism and other global threats. But when Jake retired from active military duty and returned to America, in his words, he no longer recognized the nation he had spent so many years defending. Jake quickly saw that Americans were at war with one another. Rather than just lamenting this sad situation, Jake decided to do something about it, and you'll learn all about that in today's episode. More About Our Wise Guest - Jake Harriman Jake Harriman graduated with distinction from the United States Naval Academy and served seven and a half years in the US Marine Corps as a platoon commander in both the infantry and force recon. Following his service in the military, Jake enrolled at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Following his service in the military, Jake enrolled at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. While at Stanford, he founded Nuru International to eradicate extreme poverty in the world's most unstable, vulnerable regions, to help end violent extremism. Jake also played a vital role in drafting, introducing and passing groundbreaking new legislation called the Global Fragility Act of 2019 that equips America with new authorities and resources to prevent conflict and stabilize some of the most fragile regions around the world. Today, Jake is the founder and president of More Perfect Union, a veteran-led civic organization that works to unite the country and strengthen our communities through social connection, service and civic engagement. What if your life could become a masterpiece of intentional creativity? Join us as we explore this possibility with Pia Leichter, an author, founder, creative director and guide in this special 30-minute episode. Celebrating the Creative Potential Within Us All In our conversation with Pia, we dive into the essence of creativity as a vital force beyond the arts, challenging the common misconception that it exists solely in artistic endeavors. She shares insights on how creativity is akin to teaching and coaching, requiring courage and the willingness to embrace uncertainty. We also explore creativity in unexpected domains, from science to law, and highlight its universality, encouraging everyone to recognize their inherent creative potential, irrespective of their field or background. Shared wisdom and stories, like Pia’s rather spontaneous decision to take a four-week journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway, illustrate how we hold the power to rewrite our narratives. We also delve into practical steps for nurturing creativity in everyday life, from morning routines to visualizing desired outcomes, empowering listeners to take control of their own creative destinies. A Bit More About Our Wise Guest Pia Leichter is a creative partner, published author, certified coach, and entrepreneur. Ep. 125: From Military to Ministry - Dave Schutter's Wisdom Journey
What if you could redefine your identity beyond titles and roles? How do you know which path to take when you come upon a fork in the road along life’s journey? Join us, as we explore these profound questions with our remarkably wise guest, Dave Schutter. From Military to Ministry - Dave Schutter’s Wisdom Journey Our special guest Dave Schutter had his sights set on a military career, dreaming of an appointment to West Point. But God had a different plan for his life. From his dreams of West Point to a transformative mission trip to Albania, Dave's journey is a testament to adaptability, faith and finding purpose. Together, we unravel the intricate balance of separating who we are from what we do, sharing experiences from his time as a military chaplain in Afghanistan and his work in pastoral ministry. It's an engaging conversation steeped in life's simple joys and the wisdom found in unexpected places. More about Pastor Dave Schutter Dave is a military veteran, a pastor and a pizza aficionado. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, as the son of a military man, Dave dreamed of attending West Point, but a sports injury prevented him from passing the fitness entrance exam. He didn't give up on that dream and years later Dave qualified for that appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point. But he turned down that opportunity in favor of something different. Today, Dave leads the congregation at Northwest Presbyterian Church as Senior Pastor. Notably in Dave's life, he served as a military Chaplain in the US Army, including an active deployment in Afghanistan. That tour of duty earned him the prestigious Bronze Star. Dave Schutter graduated with a Master of Divinity degree from Covenant Theological Seminary in 1997 and earned a Master of Theology degree from Westminster Seminary in 2017. He completed his undergraduate studies at Miami (Ohio) University in 1993. Dave is also a contributor to the Jonathan Edwards Encyclopedia (Eerdmans, Fall 2017) and the Jonathan Edwards Global Sermon Editing Project. Courage & Community-Building are Par for the Course with Alison Stepping onto a golf course is a serene escape for some, but for Allison Ibarra, it was the beginning of a journey that led her from competitive golf to transforming a near-derelict bowling alley into Pinhead's Family Fun Center—a community gem in Oak Hill, West Virginia. Join me as I chat with Allison, a driven entrepreneur and resilient military spouse, who shares how she turned personal challenges into opportunities for community growth and family happiness. Her story is a testament to the power of determination and adaptability. Through Allison's stories and wisdom lessons, we explore the essence of friendship, community service, and the unique resilience required in the face of life's challenges. In today’s conversation with this courageous, servant leader, you will discover Alison’s Main Thing and also learn: How an incredibly productive entrepreneur manages it all; How a military spouse and her husband coped with long deployments and many months apart; and How the strongest leaders gain tremendous respect by being peace makers, rather than conflict initiators. More About Our Guest Alison is a native West Virginian, born and raised in Oak Hill. She’s a former golfer, who played competitively and worked as a PGA teaching professional. As a military spouse, married to a counter intelligence agent, Alison Ibarra has lived in many places across America. Today, she owns and operates a bowling alley, as Chief Pinhead at Pinheads Family Fun Center of the New River Gorge. Ep. 117 - Jon Beck Navigating ALS with Acceptance & Gratitude
Welcome to the Main Thing Podcast, where every episode brings you a concise, high-impact wisdom lesson from one of the wisest people I know. Studying their wisdom and learning together, we all get just a little bit better at this thing called life. Jon Beck Navigating ALS with Acceptance and Gratitude If you were diagnosed with a serious, perhaps fatal, health condition, would you be able to approach it with acceptance—much less gratitude? I’m fairly certain I’d struggle to do so. Yet that’s exactly what has enabled Jon Beck to get to where he is today. Unyielding Spirit in a Father’s Journey through Lou Gehrig’s Disease Our special, wise guest is a new friend, a special human being with the most amazing spirit and attitude, and someone battling a fatal disease. Jon Beck is seven years into a battle with ALS. As you will hear in this powerful conversation, Jon is not defined by his disease. Though ALS will eventually take his life, he will not allow it to rob him of his joy. In this uplifting episode, you will learn the three keys to navigating any challenge, to making it through any form of adversity. More About Our Guest Jon Beck, explored the Western United States, often by bicycle, in his younger years until one day he decided to enroll in physical therapy school at Emory University in Atlanta. While there, he met the love of his life, lisa. Shortly thereafter they got married and began having kids and raising a family. Jon's nearly 20-year career as a physical therapist was ironically truncated by a physically debilitating disease ALS in 2017. Seven years later, Jon remains very active in his power wheelchair. He applies his background in biomechanics to good use every day. This despite the initial prognosis from doctors that he might only have two years to live. Jon is the proud father of three adult children. They continue to provide tremendous inspiration to him, as does his wife, Lisa. Jon Beck spoke with us from his home in St Albans, West Virginia, USA. Welcome to the Main Thing Podcast, where every episode brings you a concise, high-impact wisdom lesson from one of the wisest people I know. Studying their wisdom and learning together, we all get just a little bit better at this thing called life. Fostering Democracy and Personal Growth Through Collaborative Exploration What if embracing diverse ideas could transform not just your personal growth, but also strengthen democracy itself? Tune into an enlightening conversation with Dr. Shannon Wheatley Hartman, president of the Interactivity Foundation. She reveals how an exploratory mindset opens doors to innovative thinking and community building. Drawing inspiration from her mentor, Dr. Jack Byrd, Shannon shares invaluable lessons on being present and supportive in our interactions. We dive into the foundation's commitment to nurturing democratic skills like generous interpretation and comfort with ambiguity, underscoring the ongoing importance of fostering wisdom in our everyday lives. More About Our Wise Guest - Dr. Shannon Wheatley Hartman Shannon Wheatley Hartman is the President of the Interactivity Foundation, a nonpartisan and non-advocacy organization founded decades ago in Parkersburg, WV. The foundation has grown to become a nationally recognized leader, focused on strengthening democracy through discussion. Shannon is an expert facilitator who has been working to advance civic discussion skills and mindsets in communities and classrooms for over 15 years. She entered the nonprofit world through academia. She has a Ph.D. in political science and has taught at several universities. Perhaps unintentionally, Shannon tests out all of her new discussion experiments on her family. She lives with a wonderfully supportive husband, three daughters, and a very enthusiastic dog, “Scouty Boy.” They gravitate to activities that encourage exploration, like traveling, hiking, mountain biking, and wild baking experiments. Ep. 114. - Skip's Quips: The Power of Words
Join me for a powerful exploration of the influence of language in our lives in this special, debut edition of “Skip's Quips.” Today, I share a wisdom lesson that highlights the profound impact words can have on our bodies and minds. A seemingly innocent phrase once caused me to faint in my doctor's office. This incident underscores how words can trigger intense physical reactions, from fear to laughter. By sharing this experience, I hope to illustrate the incredible influence words wield, not only in causing fear but also in creating positive outcomes. In addition to this personal tale, we explore the broader implications of our language choices. Words have the power to either uplift or deflate us—and those around us. As you head into the coming week, I challenge you to reflect on how your words might affect others. Whether it's offering encouragement to a friend, family member, or teammate, remember that your words hold significant power. Let's harness the power of words to shape our experiences and reactions positively. Where’s the Special Guest and What’s a “Skip’s Quip?" We are doing something a little different. I’ll be sharing a wisdom lesson with you—but there won’t be a guest. Just me, sharing wisdom. A short wisdom lesson - about 9 minutes total.
