#147: There's No Such Thing As Isolation Exercise!
Welcome, fitness enthusiasts and curious minds, to another thought-provoking episode of "Truth Not Trends" – the podcast that cuts through the clutter of fitness myths and brings you evidence-based insights to maximize your workout results. Today, Liam and Jesse embark on a riveting journey into the age-old debate of Compound vs. Isolation Exercises. If you've ever set foot in a gym or delved into fitness discussions, you've likely encountered the never-ending argument of which exercise approach reigns supreme. Should we prioritize compound movements that engage multiple muscle groups, or is the isolation route the key to target specific muscles with precision? Some coaches will claim there are physiological advantages from using compound movements. They promote functional strength, enhance muscle coordination, and improve overall athleticism. On the other hand, we can make a compelling case for isolation exercises. Are they merely the icing on the cake for fine-tuning aesthetics, or do they serve a more significant purpose in injury prevention and minimizing muscle imbalances? We'll dive deep into the world of targeted muscle isolation and explore how it complements a well-rounded training program. In truth there are numerous examples of real people who have achieved remarkable results using both approaches. The goal isn't to declare a winner in this showdown. Instead, we aim to bridge the gap between these training methods and help you make informed decisions about your fitness journey. Perhaps the optimal approach lies in harnessing the best of both worlds – a synergistic blend of compound and isolation exercises tailored to your unique goals. So, whether you're a fitness veteran or someone just starting their workout odyssey, this episode of Truth Not Trends promises to equip you with knowledge to elevate your training and achieve remarkable results. Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to fitness, but with evidence-based insights, we can all make strides toward a healthier, stronger, and happier self.

#144: Ignore The Core!
07/10/2023
#144: Ignore The Core!
In this week's TNT Strength podcast Liam and Jesse discuss training the Abdominal muscles. Learn why training your abdominal muscles every day is not necessary and may not be the most effective approach. Like any other muscle group, the abdominal muscles need time to recover and rebuild after a workout. Overtraining them without proper rest can lead to muscle fatigue, diminished performance, and increased risk of injury. It is generally recommended to allow a minimum of 48 hours of rest between direct abdominal workouts to allow for proper recovery. This time allows the muscles to repair and grow stronger. Instead of training your abdominal muscles every day, you can focus on incorporating a balanced exercise routine that targets your midsection muscles a few times per week. Additionally, it's important to note that having visible abs is not solely dependent on how frequently you train them. The appearance of your abs is largely influenced by your body fat percentage. Even if you have well-developed abdominal muscles, they may not be visible if they are covered by a layer of fat. To reveal your abs, you need to combine abdominal exercises with a healthy High Protein Whole Food Personal Eating Plan and aim for overall body fat reduction. TNT Strength can help you design a suitable workout program that incorporates abdominal exercises and allows for adequate rest and recovery.

#140: Machines Vs Free Weights: A Candid Conversation
This week Liam and Jesse are joined by a surprise guest who popped in just in time to join us in a discussion on the age old debate: Machines Vs Free Weights. The majority of modern weight rooms today consist of mostly power racks and benches, with machines being considered inferior or less “FUNCTIONAL”. The scientific literature says your muscles can’t distinguish what’s providing the resistance—whether you stimulate them with a barbell or a machine, you’ll get roughly the same result. When conducting training for regular folks, seniors, younger athletes, people who don’t need, want or require the specific skills of barbell training, machines are often a safer, better option. Join us and find out why at TNT Strength we feel muscle overload can be applied with a variety of tools: barbells, dumbbells, machines, manually applied resistance, body weight, sand bags, etc. Anything that can create high tension in the muscles can be used.

#139: Sustainable Success With Richard Chartrand!
Join us this week as we discuss High Intensity Strength Training with our guest Richard Chartrand of Sustainable Success. Richard first discovered “high intensity strength training” around 1981, when reading The Nautilus Bodybuilding Book by Ellington Darden PHD. After years of training with a “More is Better" approach Richard began immediately applying these principles to himself. Along the way he ended up competing in and winning or placing in a few natural bodybuilding contests (while strength training less than 20 minutes per week), Almost 40 years later, the scientific evidence has reinforced that these ideas expressed in the writings of Ellington Darden and Arthur Jones were far ahead of their time. Richard decided to pursue his passion of helping people to achieve their optimal physical results by starting his own personal training business. Richard is confident that these methods can help athletes young and old to maximize their performance, but for many of his clients their goal is to “age gracefully” ensuring that their physical independence is maintained well into their golden years.

#135: The Importance Of Strength Training During Menopause!

#135: The Importance Of Strength Training During Menopause!
This week join Liam, Jesse, and our newest strength coach Rosie as we discuss the importance of strength training during menopause. Menopause is the most important time in a woman's life to do resistance exercise. During the menopause years, women typically experience double the muscle loss of their younger years. Between the ages of 50 and 60, women can change from a half-pound average muscle loss per year to a one-pound average muscle loss per year (largely due to estrogen reduction). Bone loss follows a very similar pattern. Strength training (along with sufficient sleep and protein intake) can help maintain and even increase muscle mass and bone density during this same time period. At TNT Strength we recommend brief, intense, infrequent strength training workouts as the foundation of a total fitness program. This style of training is safe efficient and effective for everyone.
