EPISODE IN BRIEF

In this episode of Coaching Conversations with Nick and Chris from Up Coach discusses the top 5 tips in hiring a manager for a business.  What can you look for both before hiring and during the trial period that will confirm you have the right person for the role?  Cross checking, conversations and considerations to be confident you’re making the right decision.  Listen in to be ensure you can make the right moves to save you time and grow your business … with the right person.

Time Code/Show Notes

0.25   Chris’ welcomes you to this new episode … focussed on the top tips for sourcing and hiring the right manager to run your business.   Ready to scale and grow and just can’t find the right person?  This is the show for you.

2:38   Nick discusses how important it is to have the right person in place to help grow your business.  Do your research… check out what the role you need does.  A General Manager or an Ops Manager?  Defining the right role is vital.

4:03   The Number 1 Tip:  is all about the right “personality type”.  If you get this wrong can be very messy.  If they rub you the wrong way, doesn’t matter how good they are at the job.

Recommend a DISC profile – Dominance, Infuence, Steadiness, Conscientious.  Depending on the role needed – finding the right mix of these qualities is imperative.

7.26  The Number 2 Tip:  Good leadership quality vital.

Fair but Firm.  Needs to be able to treat people well and also have the difficult conversations when needed.

8.55  How do we assess someone’s leadership abilities early?  It’s someone who has the pulse of the people.  Are people connecting or resistant to the manager?  A key indicator

11.00  The Number 3 Tip:  Past hands-on experience.  You can know everything academically – but without having done it for real… unlikely to succeed.  Need to have grease on their hands.  Experience “in your industry” even better still.  Check people’s references.  Listen to those who’ve worked with them before.

What have they done… what was achieved… financial results… feathers in their cap?  Get evidence.  There’s a difference between an instructor at Duntroon and actual battlefield experience for real…

17.00  The Number 4 Tip:  Hiring and Firing ability.  Need to be able to identify talent whether finding or letting go.  Have the ability to dismiss workers that aren’t needed or performing.  They need to do this without the business owners help.

18.50 The Number 5 Tip:  Long term commitment.  Need to have stability in their own employment history.  Keep in mind the messy time of Covid… but the right person isn’t moving on swiftly between roles.   They should be sticking around.

21.14  Nick’s Case Study. Hiring an Operational Manager for a real client.  What can be learned from this experience?  Good and not so good!

27.34  A quick review of Nick’s Top 5 checklist for hiring a new manager for your business.
