How Humans Heal
In this episode I'm really excited to introduce you to Dr. Aimie Apigian. She is the author of the book "The Biology of Trauma" and specializes in helping people recover from trauma using somatic therapy and “parts work,” which is a form of psychotherapy developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz. As listeners know, I (Dr. Doni) have been researching and writing about stress and trauma for over 30 years. I feel it is imperative that we support patients to recover from stress and trauma, which is how I developed my Stress Recovery Protocol, and why I continue learning modalities, and teaching...

Have you wondered if being a highly sensitive person might increase your risk of high-risk HPV and abnormal pap smears? I'm Dr. Doni Wilson, a naturopathic doctor and women's health expert. I help women who test positive for high-risk HPV virus, including women who have abnormal cells on the cervix or in the vagina, to eliminate high-risk HPV so they don't have to continue getting ongoing procedures and potentially develop cancer. Most women find out they're testing positive for high-risk HPV after having a gynecology exam and pap smear. More practitioners are now testing for high-risk HPV at...

In this episode I'm going to be talking about my approach to healthcare in general, and specifically women's health and abnormal pap smears. I want you to understand how what I do and the way I approach healthcare is different than what you may have experienced in other practitioners' offices or medical offices. This is a different way of looking at things, a different way of looking at the human body, and a different way of looking at how healing can happen. If you choose to become a patient of mine or work in one of my programs, you'll know this is the way Dr. Doni guides you to heal! LINKS...

In this episode, I'm looking forward to introducing you to Dr. Jenn Simmons. She is a breast surgeon who turned into an integrative oncologist, now specializing in helping women identify breast cancer early and prevent breast cancer from happening in the first place. She has opened two QT breast imaging centers and is preparing to open more of them to help women in this effort to reduce breast cancer nationwide and even worldwide. Dr. Simmons is also author of "The Smart Woman's Guide to Breast Cancer." The book, as Dr. Simmons explains, is not just for women with breast cancer - it's...

Today I want to talk about where to begin when you get a positive HPV test. A significant change has occurred in how we detect HPV - decades ago, we only discovered HPV once abnormal cells were identified. Now, women are tested for high-risk HPV during routine pap smears, leading to more frequent diagnoses. I believe women are more susceptible to high-risk HPV than ever before. The HPV virus doesn't discriminate by age; I help women from age 20 to 75 and beyond because HPV can affect women at any stage of life. Importantly, even after a hysterectomy, you're not immune - the virus can impact...

I invited Dr. Murray to join me on How Humans Heal because I want you, the listeners, to have the latest, greatest information about menopause, hormone replacement, and metabolism so you can be making the informed decisions for...

Today we're going to be talking about the seven reasons I recommend avoiding gluten to help clear the high-risk HPV virus from your body once and for all. I've been an expert in gluten and have specialized in helping patients with it for over 20 years. I was forced to learn about gluten when I was getting severe migraines, and when my daughter developed severe eczema as an infant. I had to understand the role gluten was playing to help heal both myself and my daughter. This led me to research gluten endlessly, reading all available research articles from and speaking at professional...

Today I'm excited to interview Jill Foos, a board-certified Health and Wellness Coach. We're going to be talking about health coaching and how it can help you, especially with midlife challenges. Jill and I also talk about the importance of a having a comprehensive health care team, including a naturopathic doctor, to support you during menopause. We all experience what it's like to be in the middle of life as humans, and there are different challenges and changes that come along, particularly for women. Jill and I want to help you understand what's happening in your body and how you can...

Today, I'm going to be talking about how healing, specifically from high-risk HPV virus, isn't just physical. Your mental and emotional health matters just as much when it comes to fending off HPV and preventing health issues overall. This is such an important topic to me because we're typically taught that our mind and body are separate. We often go to different practitioners for our mental health than for our physical health. However, what research shows us is that there's a profound mind-body connection—there's actually no separation between our mind and body. Our mental and emotional...

There are many misconceptions about stress and what to do about. So much so that I am even hesitant to say the word. Sometimes simply the word stress causes us to stress more!
So how can we NOT stress about stress? How can we be healthy and thrive even when exposed to stress?
This is the question I have asked myself… throughout my whole life. And I want to share with you what I have discovered.
-Stress is part of being human
-You’re going to have a response to stress – that is a given
-We need to find a way to have compassion for ourselves as stressed humans
-And figure out how to support ourselves under stress
-
How do we give ourselves enough support to recover from stress?
I believe what we are lacking is anti-stress. We have a deficiency of anti-stress.
That is when symptoms happen. Anxiety, depression, sleep issues, cancer, fertility issues, digestive troubles, infections, etc.
It is not just about age. We can’t blame all our health issues on age and throw in the towel, so to speak.
I’ve definitely had times of more stress than anti-stress.
I had migraines for over 20 years. My migraines taught me – if I don’t have enough stress recovery, I’m going to get a migraine.
I didn’t want to be reliant on a medication.
I wanted to look deeper and figure out how not to have a migraine.
The same can be true for what you are experiencing in your health.
The irony is that the solution is not to overdo anti-stress either.
We are so willing to push harder, do more, and put in more of an effort… but too much of anything can result in more of a stress response.
So we have to outsmart stress and really we need to outsmart our own stress response.
It is in the gentle-ness that we get the most stress recovery.
In the process of recovering from stress myself, I identified a 3-phase.
If we skip one of the steps, stress recovery backfires.
We need all 3 phases to become resilient to stress. But it is not exactly the same process for all of us.
As humans, we all have a stress response that involves cortisol and adrenaline, but in actuality it is different for each of us.
Since our response is individualized, our treatment needs to be individualized as well.
To be most effective about your stress recovery, you need to first know how your body responds to stress so that you can then give yourself the correct treatment to recover.
For example, your cortisol could be too high, or too low, at different times of day.
And your adrenaline could be too high or too low.
I caution you not to assume that we all have the same response to stress.
And not just your immediate response to stress, but how stress affects you over time.
When you are in stress mode, and experiencing symptoms, we need to know your cortisol and adrenaline levels.
This is what I refer to as your Stress Type.
Don’t just guess. It’s important to treat based on your stress type in order to effectively recover from stress because the treatment is different for each Stress Type.
Even once you know your Stress Type, it is important to understand the concept of hormesis in order to optimize your recovery.
Hormesis is a concept that tells us that your body will respond to change. A small change can create a beneficial effect. Too big of a change ends up triggering a stress response.
This is why in our stress recovery we need to harness small changes that result in a beneficial effect in your body.
At the same time, we need to not overdo it, or else we will find ourselves right back where we started.
By implementing small incremental changes based on your Stress Type, you are increasing your chances of recovering from stresses of all types more quickly and efficiently.
I want you to be successful becoming resilient to stress and improving your energy, sleep, focus, mood and how you feel in your body.
I know it is possible to recover from trauma, loss, overwhelm and the stress we are exposed to as humans. And to be able to feel good doing what we feel passionate about.
It is possible to thrive even when stressed. I want that for you. If this resonates for you, be sure to order my new book – Master Your Stress, Reset Your Health – and follow along with me this month and next as I guide you to use the information in the book.
