Have you ever paused to think about why you are the way you are? You're not an accident! God created you and has a plan for you! Today we dive into these encouraging principles as we study Psalm 139!

DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS:

1.    In verses 1 – 5, what kinds of ways does David express God’s intimate knowledge of David’s life?
2.    What is David’s response to this kind of knowledge in verse 6? Why do you think David responds this way? As you reflect on these truths about God, and as you realize that this is His knowledge of you too, what impact do these truths have on you? Why?
3.    Verses 7 to 9 continue this same thought of extolling God’s omniscience and omnipresence. How is the emphasis of verses 7 – 9 different than the emphasis of verses 1 – 5?
4.    In verse 10, David talks about God’s ability to lead David no matter where he (David) is. Why is this fact a comfort to David? How might it comfort us in our walk with the Lord today?
5.    In verses 11 – 12, what limitation does darkness have on God? Why is that different than the limitations that darkness would have on a person living back in David’s day?
6.    Verses 13 – 16 are famous verses in the Prolife cause because they discuss God’s loving care and knowledge of a child who is still within the womb. What truths do these verses communicate about the sanctity of life? How have these verses guided your own understanding about the sanctity of life?
7.    Verses 17 & 18 give a fairly concrete picture of God’s omniscience. What is David’s point in these verses? What comfort does he draw from these truths?
8.    Verse 19 brings a turn in the flow of thought. What is the focus of these verses? Why might David mention those who are wicked and shed blood? What is David’s view of such people? How should this guide our view of these kinds of people?
9.    Verses 21 & 22 speak of the intensity of David’s hatred for God’s enemies. We’ve talked about how this idea of “hate” speaks of standing against someone and an intentional refusal to join with someone. Why would David (as a king) need this kind of “hatred” for God’s enemies? What might have happened to David’s rule if he were to join with these people instead? How does compromise often undermine political leaders?
10.    Verses 23 & 24 end with an important mindset to have when we come before the Lord. What does David ask of the Lord? Why do you think he asks these questions? What would it look like for the Lord to answer David’s request?
11.    As you consider Psalm 139, what are the main truths that have been taught in this psalm? What principles from these truths still stand today?
12.    Take a few minutes and convert these principles into points of worship, and then take a few moments and praise God for what this psalm reveals about His knowledge, His omnipresence, His creative power, His holiness and His loving care for His people.
