779. 779."10 years… one promise… I was going to change my life in every way possible." - Nathan Elser -

You Just Have To Laugh

Nathan Elser’s words: “It was 2016. I was in Cell Block 16, locked in an 8x10 concrete cell 23 hours a day. My cellmate was a young dude who looked like a drugged-out Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High — detoxing and fighting demons, physically and mentally. I'd stare into the polished piece of metal bolted to my cell wall, the closest thing to a mirror, and look at the shell of a person I'd become. And I made a promise: I was going to change my life in every way possible. “I'm sharing this because somewhere out there is a kid or someone out there who thinks their life is...

You Just Have To Laugh

For half a century, my comedy material gave me a voice, an identity, and a place to stand. But I discovered even something I deeply loved became a boundary. I began protecting what worked instead of risking what might work next.  So, I recently performed it for the last time. I am no longer required to sound like the comedian I was. It’s time to surprise myself again. I retired my comedy material. I did not retire my gift for creating. I just cleared the stage for it.

You Just Have To Laugh

Tio (Uncle) Pepe has spent most of his life making people laugh. Long before there was a stage, microphone, or even the name Tio Pepe, he was the middle child of Cuban refugees, born and raised in Kansas City. From an early age, he hated seeing people sad or upset… even people he didn’t particularly like. Being the middle child also taught him something else very quickly: if he wanted attention, he was going to have to figure out how to create it himself.     His formative years were spent in Catholic schools where he developed the combination of...

775. Is it love or attachment? show art 775. Is it love or attachment?

You Just Have To Laugh

Love gives freedom. Attachment demands reassurance. Love sees the other person as they truly are. Attachment sees what they provide. Love can grieve and still let go. Attachment clings because letting go feels like losing part of oneself. The question is, “Can I care for them without needing to possess, control, or change them?”

You Just Have To Laugh

“Humor allows the armor to come off and the message to be heard.” That is a quote from Eric Donono. At 37, he’d been to war, survived multiple explosions, lost children and countless friends, and was on the verge of losing his marriage. Seated at his kitchen table, Eric began to squeeze the trigger, but it refused to move. Told with unwavering honesty, Eric’s book, “Canyon of Hope” is a raw, unflinching story of survival, resilience, and redemption that’s more than just a recounting of a veteran’s experiences at war; it’s a roadmap for overcoming adversity, discovering...

You Just Have To Laugh

The brain can tell us what is reasonable. The heart can tell us what is right. And sometimes the wisest thing a person can do is let the heart overrule the calculation. Wisdom is knowing when to stop asking what something will cost you. Sometimes compassion looks irrational to the mind—but turns out to be the deepest form of wisdom.
