Bio:
Derick Deal works as a high-performance fitness coach, assisting anyone from clients wanting to lose weight to competing Olympians in reaching their goals. What separates his work from that of a more traditional fitness coach is his belief in the mental and philosophical side of this pursuit. For Derrick fitness is never merely a physical state. Derrick has a degree in Philosophy from the University of Virginia and it was during his time studying that he encountered many of the foundational ideas and thinkers that influence his work today.
Marcus Aurelius, Aristotle and Darwin are just some of the initial influences on what he calls “360 fitness”. For Derick this means having a purpose rather than a plan. He believes that rather than just going on a diet as an isolated means to losing weight, we need to approach the challenge with a purpose that includes our mental, emotional and spiritual attitude. With his work for Precision Nutrition, Derick has helped people to think about how much food they need to eat and listening to their bodies instead of counting calories.
One of Derick’s more profound ideas that he presents to clients as a motivating tool is prompting them to imagine what it would feel like if had achieved all their goals or found their ultimate purpose. This idea preempts even knowing what your ultimate purpose may be, but allows individuals to start to visualize what it is that they value and how they would like to live their lives.
