Season 6, Episode 6
"Incorporating a Warrior Ethos
in High School College- and
Career-Ready Curricula"
alt txt = https://multilingualadaptive.net/article4.html
PROGRAM NOTES:
This episode of the TEACHING
CONTENT podcast describes a plan
for infusing self-determation and
self-advocacy skill-building into
popular College and Career Ready
(CCR) programs in secondary schools
across Kansas and America.
CCR and Individual Programs of
Study (IPS) are now mainstream
for all students throughout
Kansas schools, spearheaded by
education commissioner Randy
Watson over the past decade.
In this TEACHING CONTENT episode,
"Incorporating a Warrior Ethos
in High School College- and
Career-Ready Curricula," Robb
Scott attributes fundamental
CCR concepts and practices to
the work of early special education
pioneers in the field of transition
planning since IDEA in 1990. Scott
recounts the evolution of transition-
based skill-building in the areas of
self-determination and self-advocacy,
which he argues ought to be central
to CCR programs preparing high
school students for success and
fulfillment as lifelong learners.
The "warrior ethos" which Scott
suggests as an aspirational ideal
for CCR and transition-planning
in Kansas schools is inspired by
research and guidance from
Desgrosseilliers (2014) and
Shuford (2009), and butresses
this proposal for educators and
policymakers to more highly value
autonomy, assertiveness, and
persistence in the characters of
Kansas high school completers, whom
Scott refers to as "College and
Career Ready Warriors."
