Season 6, Episode 6: College and Career-Ready Warriors
THE TEACHING CONTENT PODCAST Season 6, Episode 6 "Incorporating a Warrior Ethos in High School College- and Career-Ready Curricula" alt txt = PROGRAM NOTES: This episode of the TEACHING CONTENT podcast describes a plan for infusing self-determation and self-advocacy skill-building into popular College and Career Ready (CCR) programs in secondary schools across Kansas and America. CCR and Individual Programs of Study (IPS) are now mainstream for all students throughout Kansas schools, spearheaded by education commissioner Randy Watson over the past decade. In this TEACHING CONTENT episode, "Incorporating a Warrior Ethos in High School College- and Career-Ready Curricula," Robb Scott attributes fundamental CCR concepts and practices to the work of early special education pioneers in the field of transition planning since IDEA in 1990. Scott recounts the evolution of transition- based skill-building in the areas of self-determination and self-advocacy, which he argues ought to be central to CCR programs preparing high school students for success and fulfillment as lifelong learners. The "warrior ethos" which Scott suggests as an aspirational ideal for CCR and transition-planning in Kansas schools is inspired by research and guidance from Desgrosseilliers (2014) and Shuford (2009), and butresses this proposal for educators and policymakers to more highly value autonomy, assertiveness, and persistence in the characters of Kansas high school completers, whom Scott refers to as "College and Career Ready Warriors." Season 5, Episode 5: Seeking Plausibility in MTSS The TEACHING CONTENT Podcast Hosted by Robb Scott, Author and Motivational Speaker November 21, 2024 Alt txt = Article in Multilingual Adaptive Systems Newsletter (This is also a chapter in a book, "To Everything There Is a Season: Reflections on Interdisciplinary Studies," Scott, 2021) Hardcover, paperback, and kindle editions: I have been involved with implementation of a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework for differentiating instruction since 2008, when I co-chaired one of the first major RTI (response to intervention) professional development events in Kansas, the KASP-CEC Joint Conference with 340 attendees in Junction City. That event, co-sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE), was an exciting endeavor that launched a number of important MTSS/RTI related initiatives throughout the state and region. A few years later, I was named to the Special Education Advisory Council at KSDE, which considers policy and makes recommendations to the Kansas State Board of Education (KSBE), where both MTSS and PBIS were continually included on our meeting agendas during roll outs of these initiatives in schools across the state. A few years ago, a teacher shared with me some frustrations she and her colleagues had regarding implementation of MTSS. Her message motivated me to consult several professionals with a great deal more expertise than I have in MTSS, and I shared their responses with the concerned teacher, along with some further data from my own research. Today's episode of the TEACHING CONTENT podcast is a report adapted from the letter I wrote back to that teacher. Thank you for listening and reading! "The Magic Bonsai Tree - Demo" TEACHING CONTENT Podcast, Season 4, Episode 6, Sept. 26, 2024 Alt txt: Scott, R.B. (2020). Mono no aware: Revisiting the Magic Bonsai Tree. PanSIG 2019 Journal, pp. 283-289. Abstract: The use of stories is explored as a strategy to support the development of reading and listening comprehension skills. A rationale is presented to justify a procedure that the author developed in order to apply concepts from reading theory as well as commonly accepted principles of second language acquisition theory. The "Magic Bonsai" procedure presents learners with opportunities to respond non-verbally to an initial hearing of the day's episode, followed by a second hearing to prompt active questioning by the listeners. The students listen to the episode a third time in order to anticipate what will happen next in the story. The key to success with this teaching approach is to combine familiar contexts with many chances for guessing ahead. This episode shares an article based on the following presentation by Robb Scott, host of the TEACHING CONTENT podcast: Scott, R.B. (2019, May). Mono no aware: Revisiting the Magic Bonsai Tree. Refereed presentation at the PanSIG conference at Konan University in Nishinomiya, JAPAN. Note: Robb Scott was part of the first group of ESL/EFL teaching faculty that arrived at Nakajo, Japan, to open SIUC-Niigata, a branch campus of Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, in May of 1988. At that ESL/EFL program in Japan, Robb Scott innovated what is now called the "Nakajo Stories" or the "Magic Bonsai Tree" teaching method for reading and listening skills. Research from Grellet (1981) and Sperber and Wilson (1986) informed Scott's development of his unique approach at SIUC-Niigata. Today's podcast episode shares the basic "Magic Bonsai Tree" methodology, engaging podcast listeners in a "demo" activity for greater understanding; a discussion of supporting research in cognitive-processing, neuroscience, and second-language acquisition; a testimonial from Daniel Castelaz, a fellow teacher who collaborated with Robb Scott at SIUC-Niigata and used the method with his students as well; and concluding remarks from Robb Scott about further implications of these findings. Season 4, Episode 2: "An Appreciation of Emily S. Lee's New Book"
The TEACHING CONTENT Podcast Season 4, Episode 2 - "An Appreciation of Emily S. Lee's Book" Your Podcast Host: Dr. Robb Scott Alt txt = (An article published in the new Spring/Summer 2024 issue of C2C Digital Magazine) Intro: Recently I enjoyed listening to a “New Books in Philosophy” podcast, during which Emily S. Lee, author of “A Phenomenology for Women of Color: Merleau-Ponty and Identity-in-Difference” (Lexington Books, 2024), was interviewed by Sarah Tyson, of the New Books Network. One thing that caught my attention in that was hearing that Lee, a professor of philosophy at California State University, Fullerton, started this writing project in order to examine a widely accepted definition of racism as “bias.” I spent the month of June slowly, painstakingly reading and re-reading, sometimes outloud to myself and/or others, the entire text, only skipping what looked to be her reprehensio, chapter four, “Three Criticisms of Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology,” in order to stay focused on Lee’s main argument as presented in chapter one, “A Phenomenology of Perception: Racisms as Bias and Multiplicitous Subjects”; chapter two, “The Phenomenological Structure of Experience: The Ambiguity of Intersectionality for a Group Identity”; chapter three, “The Body Movement of Historico-Racial-Sexual Schema”; chapter five, “In the Face of Indifference: The Phenomenological Structure of Identity-in-Difference”; and the four-page Conclusion. There are copious notes at the end of each chapter and a solid bibliography and light index in the back of the book. And the book starts with a 15-page Introduction (plus three pages of notes), which includes a useful overview chapter-by-chapter synopsis. Season 4, Episode 1 - Reawakening DEI
The TEACHING CONTENT Podcast Season 4, Episode 1: "Reawakening DEI" Host - Robb Scott August 12, 2024 Alt txt = In today's podcast, Robb Scott shares the notes from his recent session, "Accessibility as a Driver of Purposeful Pedagogy," presented at the recent Summer Institute for Distance Learning and Instructional Technology (SIDLIT “Side Light”) 2024 Annual Conference, which was held on July 29-31, 2024 in Kansas City, Kansas. SESSION ABSTRACT: There is at present a potentially oppressive sociopolitical context nationwide and globally which suggests educational settings must be unencumbered by considerations of concepts such as equity, diversity, and inclusion. In this SIDLIT 2024 session, the presenter will outline an argument antithetical to these sociopolitical trends, and will suggest that the future of democracy and education, with a nod to Dewey, is in the balance today. This pro-equity, pro-diversity, and pro-inclusion argument is based on understanding a passion for teaching and learning through the lenses of Skrtic's problem-solving paradigm shift, Lee's "identity-in-difference" phenomenology, and the creative instructional solutions enabled by universal design principles and open-horizon models of education. Thank you for listening today. Check our archives at More research by Robb Scott: Sincerely, Dr. Robert Bruce Scott, Ed.D.

Doze and Linda Kenepaske Fan of "For Whom the Bell Tolls": a fellow teacher at DJDS (Brian Welling, who tells me it has been influential in his life and he has read it three times) Other novels by others of my favorite authors: Leslie Marmon Silko's "Almanac of the Dead" and "Ceremony"; Thomas Hardy's "A Pair of Blue Eyes" (first of many Hardy novels I enjoyed reading with Professor Peter Casagrande when I was 20 years old) Related anecdote: When my older brother John presented on art conservation at DJDS and we met interesting people at the art/science teacher's dinner party "Spoiler Alert" One more note about Marmon Silko's "Ceremony" and reading it in 1984 with seniors at Kickapoo Nation School in Powhattan, Kansas Note about frayed and unfinished plot threads in Marmon Silko's "Almanac of the Dead" as I finished reading it in Japan while teaching at Chubu University in 1991-92 Standard omniscient third-person narration plus flashbacks Stream-of-consciousness third-person narrator omniscient mostly only about the protagonists thoughts/experiences Jump-gap perspective switches in Beowulf and in Hemingway's tale Spanish fascists versus revolutionary Republicans Captain Mora and Lieutenant Berrendo Everyone in "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is speaking in Spanish and mostly about events they are living through in the Spanish Civil War The use of three different pronouns in Robert Jordan's stream of consciousness thoughts: he, I, and you Comparisons with "Aura" by Carlos Fuentes and "Niebla" by Miguel de Unamuno Hemingway's story is sustained by the protagonist Robert Jordan's stream of consciousness A unique manner of ending the novel THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TODAY!
