CH 5 SIN/PURIFICATION/DECONTAMINATION/REPARATIONS OFFERINGS CONTINUED – REMEMBER, THERE WERE NO CHAPTER DIVISIONS WHEN THIS WAS WRITTEN

5:1“If anyone sins in that he hears a public adjuration to testify, and though he is a witness, whether he has seen or come to know the matter, yet does not speak, he shall bear his iniquity (A CURSE IF YOU DON’T COME FORTH!); 2or if anyone touches an unclean thing (NOT A MORAL FAILING – IT’S A SPIRITUAL DISQUALIFICATION), whether a carcass of an unclean wild animal or a carcass of unclean livestock or a carcass of unclean swarming things, and it is hidden from him and he has become unclean, and he realizes his guilt; 3or if he touches human uncleanness, of whatever sort the uncleanness may be with which one becomes unclean, and it is hidden from him, when he comes to know it, and realizes his guilt; 4or if anyone utters with his lips a rash oath to do evil or to do good, any sort of rash oath that people swear, and it is hidden from him (SPOKE WITHOUT THINKING), when he comes to know it, and he realizes his guilt in any of these; 5when he realizes his guilt in any of these and confesses the sin he has committed, 6he shall bring to the Lord as his compensation (REPARATION) for the sin that he has committed, a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat, for a sin (SPIRITUAL DECONAMINATION – PURIFICATION) offering. And the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin.

CONSIDER THIS GUIDANCE WHEN YOU READ ABOUT JEPTHA IN JUDGES CH 11 … THE ISRAELITE LEADER JEPTHA MADE A VOW TO OFFER A HUMAN SACRIFICE (WHATEVER CAME OUT OF HIS HOUSE … MOST LIKELY THINKING IT WOULD BE A SLAVE) IF YAHWEH GAVE HIM VICTORY. HE’S VICTORIOUS, HOWEVER, HIS DAUGHTER WAS THE FIRST ONE OUT AND HE ENDS UP OFFERING HER AS A BURNT OFFERING. THIS LEVITICAL LAW WOULD HAVE GIVEN HIM RELIEF, HOWEVER, THE KNOWLEDGE OF TORAH WAS VERY MUCH LACKING IN THE TIME OF THE JUDGES.

Mt 5:37 (JESUS SPEAKING DURING THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT)33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

BACK TO LEV 5 – ATONEMENT FOR RASH VOWS

5:7“But if he cannot afford a lamb, then he shall bring to the Lord as his compensation for the sin that he has committed two turtledoves or two pigeons, one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. 8He shall bring them to the priest, who shall offer first the one for the sin offering. He shall wring its head from its neck but shall not sever it completely, 9and he shall sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering on the side of the altar, while the rest of the blood shall be drained out at the base of the altar; it is a sin offering. 10Then he shall offer the second for a burnt offering according to the rule. And the priest shall make atonement for him for the sin that he has committed, and he shall be forgiven.

5:11“But if he cannot afford two turtledoves or two pigeons, then he shall bring as his offering for the sin that he has committed a tenth of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering. He shall put no oil on it and shall put no frankincense on it, for it is a sin offering. 12And he shall bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take a handful of it as its memorial portion and burn this on the altar, on the Lord’s food offerings; it is a sin offering. 13Thus the priest shall make atonement for him for the sin which he has committed in any one of these things, and he shall be forgiven. And the remainder shall be for the priest, as in the grain offering.” NOTE … THIS IS A VERYBIGDEAL … A SIN OFFERING THAT IS NOT A DEAD ANIMAL … NO BLOOD INVOLVED … A TENTH OF AN EPHAH OF FINE FLOUR !!

14The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 15“If anyone commits a breach of faith and sins unintentionally in any of the holy things of the Lord, he shall bring to the Lord as his compensation, a ram without blemish out of the flock, valued in silver shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, for a guilt offering. 16He shall also make restitution for what he has done amiss in the holy thing and shall add a fifth to it (CAN ALSO BE TRANSLATED FIVE-FOLD) and give it to the priest. And the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering, and he shall be forgiven. 17 “If anyone sins, doing any of the things that by the Lord’s commandments ought not to be done, though he did not know it, then realizes his guilt, he shall bear his iniquity. 18He shall bring to the priest a ram without blemish out of the flock, or its equivalent, for a guilt offering, and the priest shall make atonement for him for the mistake that he made unintentionally, and he shall be forgiven. 19It is a guilt offering; he has indeed incurred guilt before the Lord.”

THIS IS REFERRING TO ANY BREACH OF THIS SACRIFICIAL SYSTEM … EX, AN OFFERING THAT DID HAVE A BLEMISH, OR YOU TOOK A PORTION THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO THE PRIESTS, ETC. WHETHER YOU REALIZE IT OR NOT, YOU’RE GUILTY. AGAIN … HYPER-LEGALITY SO THAT GOD CAN HUMBLE EVERYONE AND LEAD THEM TO REPENTANCE & RESTITUTION … NO TRYING TO WEASEL OUT “I DIDN’T MEAN TO, OR, THAT’S NOT WHAT I INTENDED, IT WAS HIS FAULT ALSO, I’M A VICTIM HERE” NO, STEP UP AND ACCEPT YOUR GUILT THEN REPENT AND RESTORE ...THAT IS THE GOOD THAT THE LAW DOES FOR US.

Lk 19:1 He JESUS entered Jericho and was passing through. 2And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. 3And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. 4So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. 5And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” 6So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. 7And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” 8And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” 9And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” THE LEVITICAL LAW CONVICTED ZACCHAEUS AND BROUGHT HIM TO REPENTANCE AND RESTITUTION … ESPECIALLY WHEN HE WAS FACE TO FACE WITH MESSIAH! … AND THAT LED TO THE SALVATION OF HIM AND HIS HOUSEHOLD ...THE LAW IS GOOD!!

BIBLEBONESANDLIGAMENTS … SO … ARE THERE DEGREES OF SIN … ?

Deut 29:18 Beware lest there be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the Lord our God to go and serve the gods of those nations. Beware lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit, 19 one who, when he hears the words of this sworn covenant, blesses himself in his heart, saying, ‘I shall be safe, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart.’ This (DELIBERATE SIN) will lead to the sweeping away of moist and dry alike. 20 The Lord will not be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the Lord and his jealousy will smoke against that man, and the curses written in this book will settle upon him, and the Lord will blot out his name from under heaven. THE UNPARDONABLE SIN IN THE OT !!

Mt 12:32And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. THE UNPARDONABLE SIN IN THE NT !!

Jn 19:11 Jesus answered him (PONTIUS PILATE), “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.” JUDAS

1 Jn 5:16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death. WHAT ?!? YIKES!
