The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was a popular American radio series that aired from 1939 to 1950, primarily starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. The show followed a framing device where a retired Watson, living in California, would share stories of his past cases with a weekly guest. While some episodes were direct adaptations of Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories, many others were original scripts written specifically for the radio.
Episode Summaries
Murder in the Casbah (Original Air Date: December 3, 1945)
Holmes and Watson travel to North Africa to search for an Englishman named Douglas Milton, who fled Britain years prior after being wrongly accused of murder. Milton is now the heir to a noble title, but he is hiding in the lawless Casbah of Algiers, where he has joined the Foreign Legion. The detectives must navigate a web of mystery involving a beautiful woman and criminal elements to clear his name and secure his inheritance.
A Scandal in Bohemia (Original Air Date: December 10, 1945)
In this adaptation of the famous short story, the King of Bohemia hires Holmes to retrieve a compromising photograph from Irene Adler, an opera singer with whom the King once had an affair. The King fears Adler will use the photo to ruin his upcoming royal marriage. Despite using elaborate disguises and a staged fire to locate the photo, Holmes is ultimately outwitted by Adler, who discovers his ruse and flees with her new husband—though she leaves a letter promising never to use the photo against the King
