Falling, Healing & Finding Gratitude: Jonathan McLean's Journey from Trauma to Transformation

In this deeply moving episode of Catching the Octopus Podcast, host Niomi Hurley sits down with Jonathan McLean, joining from Poland, to share his real-life story of survival, spiritual awakening, and healing after a devastating fall in Nepal.

In 2012, Jonathan fell down a mountain while trekking near Kathmandu sustaining a traumatic brain injury, nerve damage, and partial paralysis. What followed was a profound journey of physical recovery, spiritual discovery, and soul-level growth.

Together, Niomi and Jonathan explore:
✨ The miraculous rescue that saved his life and the “nine angels” who carried him to safety.
✨ A prophetic dream before the fall — and how it connected to his survival.
✨ Using Ayahuasca, A Course in Miracles, and Human Design as pathways to healing and meaning.
✨ The power of words, belief systems, and how thought patterns shape recovery.
✨ What it means to surrender, trust life’s timing, and find gratitude in every moment — even lying in a hospital bed with 78 staples in his head.
✨ Cross-cultural lessons from growing up between Germany, Canada, and now Poland, and how identity and belonging transcend language or borders.
✨ The importance of alignment and energy types in Human Design — and how knowing your type (Manifester, Generator, Projector, Manifesting Generator, Reflector) can radically change the way you live, work, and love.

Jonathan’s story is both raw and inspiring and a reminder that even when life knocks you down, healing is possible, meaning can be found, and gratitude can transform everything.

Jonathan McLean is a passionate explorer of spiritual evolution and a firm believer in our collective journey towards deeper connection and self-awareness. His story began with a childhood steeped in curiosity and wonder. Growing up in Germany as a Canadian, then moving to Canada at age 13, he was blessed to experience a rich tapestry of cultures. As a young dreamer, he envisioned a future as a priest or an orchestral conductor, always asking "why" until a friend once urged him to stop questioning everything. These early experiences instilled in him a relentless quest for meaning that continues to guide his life today.

Spending over 16 years in the automotive industry, initially repairing cars, a role that nurtured his passion for hands-on problem-solving. However, his international spiritual wanderings in 2012/2013 surprisingly  included falling down a mountain in Nepal. This left him with nerve damage in his arm and the inability to efficiently repair cars as he once could. This shift led him to transition into the customer-facing side of the business, where he built an inspection business that allowed him to connect one-on-one with my clients. This was a preference rooted in his early experiences working in fast food.

In his early 20s, he embraced meditation and delved into diverse traditions like Buddhism, Taoism, and A Course in Miracles, which paved the way for his introduction to Human Design in 2019. Studying under Chetan Parkyn, he began providing Human Design readings in 2022 and started teaching in 2023. Today, he integrates a variety of modalities into his coaching practice; Human Design, deep listening, insightful questioning, empathy, 12-step group experiences, and valuable insights from podcasts. These tools nurture each interpersonal connection from a foundation of love.

Jonathan continues on his personal evolution while contributing to the broader evolution of humanity. Everyday he gets to experience a deeper sense of what it means to live life as a 6/2 Splenic Projector.
