Welcome back to the *Year of Profit* podcast, where we uncover ways to live more fully, grow personally, and profit in every area of life. I’m your host, Joe Shortridge, and today we’re diving into a question I guarantee you’ve asked yourself at least once this week—probably even this morning: *Why am I always tired?*
Now, I’m not talking about the occasional tiredness after staying up too late watching Netflix, or after pulling a long shift at work. I’m talking about that *constant tiredness*. The kind where no matter how much you sleep, you never feel fully rested. The kind where you wake up tired, go through the day tired, and crawl back into bed—guess what—still tired.
Today, we’re going to break this down. We’ll talk about the physical, mental, emotional, and lifestyle causes of fatigue, and more importantly—how you can take back your energy and live a life that feels lighter, brighter, and more powerful.
You know, I want to share something personal here. For the longest time, I was feeling tired all the time. And not just the kind of tired where you stay up too late once in a while—I mean the kind of tired that follows you day after day. I was still doing the things I loved, like walking and riding my bike, but instead of feeling energized afterward, I felt drained. It was frustrating, because I thought, “I’m staying active, so why am I still exhausted?”
Then I started looking at what I was putting into my body and what I was allowing into my mind. I realized my diet wasn’t really supporting me—I was eating too many convenience foods, grabbing whatever was quick, and not paying attention to what my body truly needed. On top of that, my mindset wasn’t helping. I was carrying stress, telling myself I was just getting older, and accepting fatigue as my “new normal.” That’s when I decided something had to change. I began eating differently—more whole foods, more vegetables, more balanced meals—and slowly I started noticing a difference. But the real shift happened when I paired that with a better mindset. Instead of expecting to feel tired, I began expecting to feel strong and capable. That combination—better fuel for my body and a healthier outlook for my mind—made all the difference. And that’s when things really started to turn around. Not overnight, but little by little, I noticed I wasn’t dragging myself through the day anymore. I felt lighter, clearer, and more alive.
Segment 1: The Physical Roots of Fatigue
Let’s start with the obvious: the body.
Your body is a machine, and like any machine, it runs on inputs. Poor inputs = poor performance.
* **Sleep**: We’ve been told we need 7–9 hours, but here’s the kicker—it’s not just about hours, it’s about *quality*. Deep sleep and REM are critical. If you’re waking up multiple times a night, scrolling on your phone before bed, or sleeping in a noisy environment—you’re not really resting.
**Diet**: Sugar highs, processed foods, too much caffeine—they create a rollercoaster. Energy spikes, then crashes. On the flip side, deficiencies like iron, B12, vitamin D, magnesium—they’re silent energy killers.
* Example: many people think they’re depressed or lazy when they’re actually just low on vitamin D.
* **Hydration**: Dehydration as little as 2% can make you feel foggy. And we often confuse thirst with hunger.
* **Exercise**: Sedentary living makes your body sluggish. Paradoxically, moving gives you energy. That 20-minute walk you don’t “feel like” doing? That’s the very thing that would wake you up.
*When was the last time you had a full week of truly restorative sleep, daily hydration, and consistent movement?*
---
Segment 2: Mental and Emotional Exhaustion
Now let’s shift gears—because even if your body’s in good shape, you can still feel wiped out. Why? The mind.
* **Stress**: Living in constant fight-or-flight. Your body keeps pumping stress hormones like cortisol, which leaves you drained.
* **Decision fatigue**: You make hundreds of decisions daily. What to wear, what to eat, how to respond to texts. Each one chips away at your mental energy.
* **Emotional baggage**: Carrying resentment, guilt, or anxiety? That weighs heavier than any dumbbell.
* **Lack of purpose**: When you wake up with nothing to look forward to, even brushing your teeth feels exhausting. Energy flows where passion goes.
---
Segment 3: Lifestyle and Habit Traps
Here’s where many of us trip up: the little daily habits that drain us.
* **Screen time**: Blue light before bed messes with melatonin. Late-night scrolling is stealing your sleep.
* **Irregular routines**: Your body loves rhythm. Constantly changing bedtimes and wake-up times confuse your internal clock.
* **Overcommitment**: Saying “yes” to everyone else leaves nothing for you. Burnout often disguises itself as tiredness.
* **Stimulant dependency**: Coffee isn’t the enemy, but if you’re relying on 5 cups a day—you’re masking the problem, not solving it.
*Relatable humor moment:* “How many of you have ever said, ‘I’m exhausted,’ while holding a double espresso in your hand?”
---
Segment 4: Practical Solutions and Energy Hacks
Now let’s flip it—what can we *do*?
1. **Audit your sleep** – Same bedtime, dark cool room, no screens an hour before bed.
2. **Fuel your body** – Whole foods, hydration, and check nutrients with your doctor.
3. **Move** – Daily, even just light exercise.
4. **Declutter your mind** – Journaling, meditation, breathing exercises.
5. **Energy management** – Work on your most important tasks when you’re naturally most alert.
6. **Boundaries** – Learn the power of “no” to protect your energy.
7. **Purpose check** – Align daily actions with what truly matters to you.
---
Segment 5: Interactive Q\&A / Reflection
Even if you don’t have live callers, you can do this by:
* Reading out common questions people ask about fatigue.
* Example: “Do power naps really help?” → Yes, if under 30 minutes.
* “What about energy drinks?” → Short boost, long crash.
* “Can mindset really change energy?” → Absolutely—positive expectation increases dopamine, which fuels motivation.
* What drains me most right now?
* What gives me energy?
* What one small change could I start today?
---
Segment 6: Closing Motivation
Here’s the truth: being tired all the time isn’t normal, and it isn’t how life is meant to be lived. Constant fatigue is your body and mind’s way of raising a red flag. And you have the power to respond.
Imagine how different your life could feel if you woke up energized, moved through your day with clarity, and went to bed satisfied. That’s possible. It doesn’t happen overnight, but small consistent changes stack up.
Energy is the foundation for everything. It’s the currency that lets you pursue your goals, nurture your relationships, and show up as your best self. So don’t just accept being tired as your “normal.” Fight for your energy. Protect it. Rebuild it.
Thank you for spending this time with me on the *Year of Profit*. If today’s episode sparked something for you, share it with someone who’s always saying, “I’m so tired.” Let’s spread energy and empowerment together.
Until next time, stay strong, stay focused, and stay energized.
