The National Road Series continues to be a hot topic. In fact, it was the compelling factor in bringing Tommy Nankervis (Ex National Road Series and International cyclist) back for a second Podcast in as many weeks. We had a lot of feedback from listeners about their intrigue in Tommy’s view and wisdom on local racing and the opportunities for improvement.

During the 2016 / 2017 criterium season in Melbourne Tommy Nankervis won 25 A grade races. It’s a feat that’s hard to fathom given the peripheral race day elements that can go against the grain of consistency. Crashes, breakaways, teams and general day-to-day physiological conditions are all uncontrollable components to a criterium, which make Tommy’s achievements quite astonishing.

Without a doubt my cycling performance improved the most when I started training with structure in 2014. Yes, that’s right! It wasn’t a new set of carbon zipp wheels, riding more bunch rides, hitting the gym or changing my diet to some extreme raw fruitarian. It was good old-fashioned methodical training. The proof is always in the pudding – for years I had stuffed around in B grade not really obtaining a noteworthy result. My goal was to win a B grade criterium and get that promotion to A grade I had been pondering for years. After a few months of training with structure (for the first...

It was a demonstration of rare human strength and an indication that Miles Scotson will be a name that brings incitement and anticipation for years to come. So as we prepare ourselves for what could be a 15+ year career, cheering on Miles Scotson from the...

Tommy Nankervis has a passion for cycling. You can hear it in his voice and you can see it in his pedaling. He’s also one of the most consistent performers you’ll ever witness. This criterium season alone - in Melbourne’s distinguished criterium scene - he won 13 A grade races, was part of 17 wins, and finished out of the money twice. An astonishing feat, particularly considering it’s a criterium; a race that incorporates high caliber contenders, inconsistent conditions, crashes, and multiple breakaway winners. Many could point their finger at Tommy’s semi professional career as the...

In this show Lee ‘Hollywood’ Turner in back interviewing Tommy Nankervis by popular demand. Given both Tommy and Lee participated in the recent Melbourne to Warrnambool (‘Warny’) road race on the weekend, they start the conversation with reflections on Tommy’s 03rd place in Australia’s oldest race. Off the back of the Warny the conversation pivots into the National Road Services. Tommy’s experience both racing at national level in Australia and overseas empowers him with a well-rounded opinion on not only the gaps, but ultimately the opportunities for improvement.
