Today’s episode features an author I’ve wanted to do since I started this show nearly 20 years ago. I just couldn’t figure out how to work Aesop into the lineup. There are so many different translations and editions, I simply never found the right one.

Then, as I was researching Somerset Maugham, I ran across a reference to the title of one of his books, Cakes and Ale. Maugham’s Cakes and Ale is a novel exposing the wrongs of societal snobbery. Maugham lifted his title from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, it seems. Maugham’s novel may have its title inspired from Joseph Jacob’s edition of Aesop’s Fables, as the moral of the story of the Town Mouse and the Country Mouse is: Better Beans and Bacon in peace than Cakes and Ale in fear. Something about that just struck a chord with me. I found the Jacob edition of the fables, and they are fantastic, as you will soon hear.

I had toyed around many times with adding one or two to the beginning and end of a show, but I didn’t think that would give them the attention due to them. Which brings us to today’s episode, where we dive in and hear 22 of Aesop’s Fables, one after another.

As you listen, you might want to check in on how you’re feeling. If you’re like me, at first I was a little resistive – these feel like kids stories at first. Peter Pan advice, right? Keep listening. See how you feel by the end of the episode. You may realize you want to start it over.
