Growing your faith isn’t just about checking spiritual boxes. It’s easy to think your faith grows when you go to church every Sunday, flip through devotionals, tick off prayers, or take communion like clockwork. But if you dig into what Jesus teaches, growing your faith is much deeper than routines.

Jesus made it clear: faith isn’t a static possession or a set of rituals. In Luke 17:5-6, the apostles ask Jesus, “Increase our faith!” and He responds, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.”

What does that tell us? Faith grows through trust that moves mountains—not through simply repeating the same activities. It’s about taking steps that seem impossible, rooted in belief that God will act.

Growth happens in the soil of trials

Jesus also taught that faith grows when it’s tested. James 1:2-4 says, “Consider it pure joy... whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you

may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.”

Faith doesn’t grow in comfort zones—it takes pressure and perseverance. Jesus modeled this in the Garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:42), surrendering His will to the Father even when facing immense suffering. Our faith expands when we choose trust over control amid life’s storms.

Faith grows through obedience, not just information

Jesus rarely praised people for religious knowledge alone. Instead, He commended those who put belief into action. Luke 6:46-49 says,

46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

Jesus compares those who hear His words and act on them to a wise builder who lays a strong foundation. Faith truly grows when hearing leads to doing. This means letting faith change how you think, speak, and behave every day—not just accumulating spiritual facts.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Grow your faith!

Relationship beats routine

Faith is ultimately about a relationship with God. Jesus prayed in John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” Growth happens when we stay connected to Jesus through intentional dependence, not mere religious habit.

That means praying honestly, listening expectantly, trusting consistently, and obeying boldly—even when it’s uncomfortable or uncertain.

So what does growing our faith really look like?

  • More than rituals: Yes, church, devotionals, prayer, and communion matter. But they are starting points, not end goals. Don’t mistake activity for growth.
  • Trust that moves mountains: Faith is marked by taking risky steps, believing God can and will act.
  • Embracing tests: Trials refine faith like fire refines gold. Lean into God’s process instead of resisting.
  • Obedience: Let faith rearrange your priorities and spur action—faith without works is dead (James 2:17).
  • Relationship with Jesus: Stay deeply connected daily, not just seasonally.

Skipping church or forgetting a devotional won’t stunt your faith as much as missing moments where you choose trust over fear and obedience over convenience.

Faith grows by living what Jesus taught, even when no one’s watching, and when the outcome is uncertain.

If your faith feels stuck in dead habits, it’s not your fault—spiritual routines can lull us into comfort. But faith is alive. It’s wild and daring. It’s trusting the unseen and acting on what Jesus commands.

Ask yourself today: Am I cultivating faith that leaps beyond rituals into radical trust and obedience? That’s the faith Jesus wants you to grow.

"Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!"
