As a result, the class wanted to know why I said this. In that vain, we are going to embark on a study of the origins of the common US holidays and then a contrast study on the "Holy Days" called out in the Feasts of the Lord. In this first episode, I go through the "Christmas Story" found in scripture and look at what it says - and doesn't say, distinguishing between cultural traditions and biblical...

Grant Janik, the Life Groups Pastor of Warren Baptist in Augusta, GA asked me to drop in and speak to his room full of "parents" for 5 minutes and impart some wisdom. This is a recording of that 5 minute talk (thats more like 8 minutes, but I tried). I hope you can find some wisdom in it for yourself.

Sabbath Verses
Convocation – calling together, sacred assembly
Hebere word "Kaw-dash’" English words:
Sanctified – consecrate, dedicate, separate, hallow
Holy – consecrate, set apart, sanctified, hallowed

Defining the Sabbath:
· Genesis 2:1-3 -> Sabbath proclaimed at Creation (7th day)
· Exodus 20:8-11 -> Sabbath declared within the Moral Law
· Exodus 23:12 -> rest, so you can be refreshed (Hebrew word speaks of taking a breath to refresh oneself)
· Exodus 31:13-16 -> Sabbath discussed amongst the plans for the tabernacle. God states, “for a perpetual covenant”
· Exodus 34:21 -> 7th day rest
· Exodus 35:1-3 -> Re-statement of the Sabbath -> statement not to kindle fire
· Lev 19:3 – Honor mother and father and keep my Sabbath
· Lev 19:30 – Keep my Sabbath and reverence my Sanctuary

Sabbath days (not 7th day)

· Lev 23 into 24 -> Feasts of the Lord, w/ non -seventh day Sabbaths
· Lev 25 – Sabbath of the Land and the year of Jubilee
Interesting correlations to the Sabbath:
· Exodus 24:16 -> Moses called to the top of Mount Sinai
· Joshua 6 -> 7th day, the walls of Jericho fell (not necessarily a Sabbath)
God’s Reaction to violations of the Sabbath:
· Exodus 16:23-30 -> The Lord hallows the Sabbath in the giving of Manna
o Negative response: vs 28 How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?
· Numbers 15:32 – First person put to death under the Law of Moses -> man gathering sticks on the Sabbath
· Nehemiah 10:31 -> Covenant Sealed, concerning the Sabbath
· Nehemiah 13:14-22 -> Commerce and work on the Sabbath
· Isaiah 1:13 -> Uselessness of the Sabbath and assemblies when living in iniquity with God
· Isaiah 56:1-8 -> Inclusion of the Gentiles as the People of God, who keep from defiling the Sabbath
· Isaiah 58:13 -> When will you turn from doing your will on My Day and do My Will?
· Isaiah 66:23 -> Prophesy of the coming worship on all days is when New Jerusalem descends from heaven after the Day of Judgement, not now – references a New Heaven and a New Earth (Rev 21)
· Jeremiah 17:21-27 -> Harken unto the Sabbath. Promise to destroy Jerusalem with fire if the Sabbath is not kept (notice parallel references between Jerusalem and eternity)
· Ezekiel 20:12-24 -> Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them….polluted my Sabbaths. Poured out my fury on them…acted for My name’s sake, that it should not be profaned before the Gentiles.
· Ezekiel 22:8;26; 23:28-30 -> they have put no difference between the holy and profane…hidden their eyes from my Sabbaths. God will therefore deal “hatefully” with us…because we have gone as a harlot after the Gentiles.
New Testament Interactions with the Sabbath:
· Matthew 12:1-12? -> vs 5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath also…

o Vs 27 -> Sabbath made for man, not man for the Sabbath
· Mark 3:1-4 -> Heals on the Sabbath
· Luke 6:1-9 -> picking grain to eat on the Sabbath
· Luke 13:14-16 -> healing on the Sabbath compared to loosing ox to water

· Colossians 2:16 -> Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of any holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days
· Context of this passage speaks of the “commandments and doctrines of men”
· Romans 14:5 – Does not observe it to the Lord – Days and diets are not the issue. Whether it is done for the Lord or for other reasons is.
Was the Sabbath changed to Sunday by Jesus?
· Acts 20:7 – Now on the first day of the week, when they came together to break bread
· 1 Corinthians 16:2 - On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.
