Penis implant surgery provides hope for those unable to get an erection and have penetrative intimacy with a partner. Without the worry of not being able to get it up, an implant can help you stop thinking about erectile dysfunction and focus on your pleasure and relationship instead. A penile implant is not a cosmetic surgery that helps you to last longer, but a tool to regain intimacy.

Dr. Jonathan Clavell is a board certified urologist and men's sexual health expert in Houston, Texas. His practice focuses on the treatment of erectile dysfunction, low testosterone BPH and Peyronie's disease.  He is one of the highest volume surgeons in penile implant surgery, and currently trains doctors both nationally and internationally when it comes to this surgery.

We cover topics like:

- 2:40 What is a penile implant
- 6:10 Who needs penile implant surgery and can a penile implant be removed
- 9:20 When erectile dysfunction is psychological
- 14:40 If a penile implant won’t work for you and disadvantages
- 18:54 What a penile implant will and won’t change
- 21:40 Can a penile implant make you bigger (or smaller?)
- 27:30 Using sex toys and sexual satisfaction with a penile implant
- 33:10 Erectile dysfunction after prostate cancer and prostatectomy
- 37:20 Penile implant for gender-affirming surgery
- 38:55 Who performs penile implant surgery
- 42:37 Avoiding complications with penile implant surgery
- 47:50 When to start using a penile implant after surgery

What is a penile implant? A penile implant is a device that can give you an erection: there are inflatable and malleable devices, with the inflatable device being the most common in the US.

If you’re struggling with erectile dysfunction, it’s common to wonder which erectile dysfunction treatment is best and if a penile implant is right for you? For many men and their partners where erectile dysfunction is a concern, a penile implant was the perfect option because it’s very effective at helping you achieve an erection and be able to have penetrative sex.

Let’s take a step back and look at the physiological cause of erectile dysfunction: caused by blood not being able to fill or remain in the penis, causing the penis to remain flaccid. For anyone experiencing erectile dysfunction, the first line of treatment is not considering a penile implant. Regardless of age, the first line of treatment for erectile dysfunction is to start with medication. If you experience erectile dysfunction from stress, you could also benefit from mental health or physical and occupational therapy.

For vasculogenic erectile dysfunction, when Viagra doesn't work (or any of the other common medications like Levitra, Staxyn, Cialis, or Stendra) a penile implant becomes an available treatment option.

Penile implants work so well because it gets your penis hard. But it’s important to note that a penile implant can not engorge the head of the penis, can not increase penis sensitivity, can not impact orgasms, and can not impact ejaculation (your partner can still get pregnant if you have a penile implant).

Is a penile implant right for you? If you’re considering a penile implant: look for a surgeon who has experience: who has done a penile implant recently and does them regularly and who is also comfortable with doing the procedure and comfortable managing complications. A great surgeon also knows how to prep you for surgery in order to get the results you want, and what post-op care to recommend.
