Ep 29 - Starting Journaling show art Ep 29 - Starting Journaling

Karen Davies Coaching Podcast

In this episode, I talk about how journalling went from “Dear Diary” embarrassment to a genuine life-changing practice for me. I share how I rediscovered journalling after moving to Australia, getting back into reading, and stepping into personal development, and why writing things down was the moment dreams started turning into actual goals. You’ll hear real examples of how journalling helped me: Catch my own limiting beliefs that were stopping me applying for senior roles. Realise when anger was actually masking hurt or fear. Spot patterns in my relationships and my leadership...

Most people think the quality of their life depends on their job, their car, or their relationships. But what if it actually depends on something far simpler, and far more powerful? The questions you ask. In this episode, Karen dives into how the quality of your questions directly shapes the quality of your life. Ep 27 - Embrace the Serendipity - Kismet - Destiny - Fate show art Ep 27 - Embrace the Serendipity - Kismet - Destiny - Fate

Karen Davies Coaching Podcast

Sometimes the biggest turning points in life don’t come from strategy, they come from sheer serendipity. In this episode, I’m diving into the magic (and science) of fate, those strange, unexpected moments that reroute your entire life when you least expect it. From the date that took me from Adelaide to Darwin, to the argument that led me to quit my job and move from the UK to Australia, to the random introduction that became a twenty-year friendship, I’ve learnt that life’s detours often lead to the best destinations. But this isn’t all woo-woo. Modern psychology, neuroscience, and...

Ep 26 - Persistence Pays show art Ep 26 - Persistence Pays

Karen Davies Coaching Podcast

Persistence isn’t glamorous, but it’s the reason every success story exists. In this episode, I talk about the one skill that underpins everything: persistence. The ability to keep going, keep learning, and keep believing: even when life gives you a thousand reasons to quit. I share my own story of persistence; from restarting my engineering degree in my 30s (after talking myself out of it once) to building my career, businesses, and discipline brick by brick. I also dive into the powerful examples of people who turned “no” into “not yet”: J.K. Rowling, rejected by 12 publishers...

Ep 24 - Taking Responsibility show art Ep 24 - Taking Responsibility

Karen Davies Coaching Podcast

Choosing to blame others as the response to a situation, means that you are degrading yourself. You see, when we continuously blame others it can reinforce a negative self-image. It suggests that we view ourselves as a victim rather than someone who is in control of their life and who has the ability and power to make choices.   Blaming others can serve as a way to avoid facing uncomfortable truths about ourselves and our actions. It can be a form of escapism that hinders personal development.  So if you constantly hear yourself saying things like, "it's not my...

Ep 23 - Managing Your Mind show art Ep 23 - Managing Your Mind

Karen Davies Coaching Podcast

If there's one thing I've learned in my life, it's that managing your thoughts is the ultimate game-changer for life, for business, for relationships…  Seriously, it's like having the control panel of your mind right there in your hands.   Because here's the truth: if you're not actively taking charge of your thoughts, then they are taking charge of you. And let me tell you, that's a slippery slope to feeling fed up, out of control and disconnected from the life that you truly desire.  Picture this: every thought you entertain is like a seed you plant in the garden...

Ep 22 - The Discipline Identity show art Ep 22 - The Discipline Identity

Karen Davies Coaching Podcast

Woody Allen said, "The only thing standing between greatness and me, is me."  We all have excuses - in fact I am the queen of excuses.  Didn’t go to the gym? I needed the lie in.  Didn't do that networking event? I had to stay in and catch up on some programs.   Ate too much? I was 'treating myself' (for the 6th day this week)     Forget about motivation- there is only one thing that is going to get you to your goals and that’s discipline.     Contrary to popular opinion: Discipline is in fact freedom.     In...

Ep 21 - The Comfort Zone Fallacy show art Ep 21 - The Comfort Zone Fallacy

Karen Davies Coaching Podcast

It's funny how we often wrap ourselves in the warm, cozy blanket of our comfort zones, believing that it's our safe haven. But what if I told you that what you perceive as a comfort zone is actually just a cunning mirage and doesn't really exist?    What am I talking about? Well, I've been banging on about how we must get out of our 'comfort zones' for years.     Yes, my friends, the so-called "comfort zone" is nothing more than an attachment to familiarity that's keeping us stuck.      When I was 14 I went into the first year of my GCSEs -...

Karen Davies Coaching Podcast

On August 21 2021 - 2 years ago at the age of 40 - I stopped drinking.  I didn't put a time limit on it like I had done in the past, I literally just said to myself, "let's see what's possible".   In today's episode I talk about my journey to giving up alcohol and how it took my a few years of the odd week and the odd month off the booze here and there and I also talk about how you don't have to hit rock bottom before you decide to stop.    I discuss how perimenopause and HRT affected my efforts and I also tell you how two outstanding questions can change your...

From being 'self sufficient' and never asking for help, to falling from a step ladder and breaking my leg - this was the journey that taught me that asking for help can be a skill and a gift.

This episode is packed full of stories.

So if you, like me, are a recovering "I can do it myself" addict, then may I suggest that you give your friends and family the opportunity and the gift of helping you.

Ask yourself, "where am I holding back? Where am I keeping people at arm's length with this approach?", because that's part of it too - when you don’t ask for help then you don't need to let people in.

It took me a long time to realise that this was part of it, and even longer to accept it, but here we are.

My life is now so much richer for learning this skill - and it is a skill - the skill of asking for help - it's not just a skill though, it's also a gift, and one that you should embrace.

Knowing that, I now embrace it - but it also means learning the art of patience and tolerance - people won't always do things the way you want or the way you would have done them, but that's ok - it's just an opportunity to learn something new, something different.

I really hope that this has given you some food for thought and that you are able to start asking for help - and when you do, take note of exactly how it impacts those around you - especially if it’s a new trait for you - you may be surprised by how happy people are to be given that opportunity.

And you get bonus points if you can use the words, "I really need your help" or
"can you please help me?" - because that's the magic word. It turns from a chore to an opportunity and opportunity is all that is needed to make someone's day.
